I read this book 15-20 years ago, and am interested in re-reading it. I have forgotten both the name of the book and the author's name.
What I remember:
1. Many of the characters in the book (maybe all) have animal DNA.
2. Near the beginning, one of the main characters (a woman with cat DNA) arrives by boat along with her "grupo", her sisters. (I think the author kills off her "grupo" fairly quickly.
3. Everybody thinks they don't eat meat. However, it is later revealed that their main food is an animal whose tissue turns plantlike after mating. I think they eventually explode as well, with eggs being scattered in the explosion. We find this out because the main character visits someone that takes care of these animals. He tried to keep one as a pet, but eventually an animal of the opposite sex found it to mate with and so it lost it's animalness as it began to swell up.
4. All of the various DNA mixtures were created by some scientist generations ago whose name is now revered and used in oaths and such.
5. Tech level is medieval, I think.
Does this ring a bell with anybody? Thanks for the help!
