Really insteresting nationwide poll concerning abortion rights (http://www.surveyusa.com/50State2005/50StateAbortion0805SortedbyProLife.htm)

The interesting parts are: Pro-life outweighs pro-choice in only 13 states, while being tied in just one.

Of the 20 states with the highest polling against abortion rights, 19 voted for Bush. Of the 20 most pro-choice states, 15 voted for Kerry.

There were also a few surprising pro-choice states: Wyoming supports choice by a margin of 57-39. Alaska, 58-37. Virginia, 54-39. Montana it's 53-42.

Utah favors criminalizing abortion by a 61-33 margin. Louisiana clocks in at 57-36 against abortion. Arkansas comes in third at 55-40 against.

As an aside, have you ever noticed that most of the people out there that are against abortion are people you would never want to fuck in the first place? (thank you George...)

Utah is filled with Mormons. Not that hard to understand the state then being against abortion. ;)

I'd also wager that their whole attitude is also tainted by the stink of the air in Salt Lake City. I've only ever driven through there, headed to other more disireable places to be, and the smell was worse than any other major city I've ever been to or through. I'd probably have a shitbox attitude too if I had to endure that every day ;)

I've never been farther west then Grand Junction, Colorado. I figure one western state is like all the others. Endless desert...

Three things:

First, the numbers in the survey could very well be right. I am not saying that they are not right. The methodolgy they describe sounds reasonable.

Second, I have been telephoned by these folks before and declined to answer. I remember that it was them because they called me four times in three days. The first time, in the evening, I politely told them that I wasn't interested in participating. The second time, the next day in the evening, I just hung up on them. The third time, the next morning, I sternly told them that I wasn't interested in participating, that they had already attempted to call me twice, and to take me off their calling list. The fourth time was later that same evening. As soon as the guy started on the same script that I had heard the other times ("Good day, sir; I'm with SurveyUSA.com, how are you today?"--or something to that effect) I tore him a new one. "Alright, look: this is the 4th time you've called in three days, including a call just this morning. I told you I'm not interested and to stop calling me. Now stop it." --and I hung up. I was yelling and the guy sounded pretty taken aback. They didn't call me again.

But the point is that I wouldn't feel that great about their results just because (1) I know that the opinions of people like me aren't included because we refuse to participate, and (2) they're not organized enough to not call me everyday until I shout at them to stop. That's just my opinion.

Lastly, the question is pretty ambiguous. They apparently ask people to identify themselves as pro-life or pro-choice, but we don't even know that to be the case because they don't tell us their survey questions (as an established polling organization such as gallup would do). We don't know if they asked certain questions and subsequently classified people as pro-life/pro-choice, listed a group of beliefs and decided for them surveyee, or what. If someone believes that abortion should only be legal in cases of rape or if life-threatening to the mother, does that make them pro-life? I would call that person pro-choice, but there's no telling what that person would call themselves.

Anyway, there are probably more pro-choice than pro-life Americans at this time. Whoopty-doo :) I just question the veracity of this survey.

the majority of americans are pro choice, but the majority of pro-lifers vote their belief on the issue. and that, in a nutshell, is how a minority hold the majority hostage in most major political systems. gun nuts do the same thing, and it's by no means an exclusively american problem...

Equally, the people who hang out (literally) at nudist beaches tend to be people you would never, ever...ever....EVER...want to see naked. Something about seeing a woman trip over her own armpit hair or a man who has to heave his tits out of the way to put sunscreen on his belly...*shiver*. Dunno why that is, but there you are.

The vast majority of people are ugly. Period. There’s your explanation.

Is that honestly surprising? It is run by mormons, caffeine is against the religion.

Nixon was right about the "silent majority," in a way. Actually, it's not that the majority is silent, it's just that the minority won't shut up. This is the case with abortion rights, gay marriages, etc. So i think instead of the "silent majority," they should be called "the majority who can't get what they want done because the minority can't shut up about what they want."

Can't trust the majority though, read some Mills.
Majority can be just as bad as an aristocracy. What I am saying is that you shouldn't make decisions based on the majority make 'em
because they are true.

But I do think abortion should be left up to the states. Either way they vote works for me. Just people should shut up about it and talk about more important things.

Basically everyone is "pro-choice" if you ask the right questions.. What was it?

If it was "would you describe yourself as pro-choice or pro-life," the lifers will have a slight majority, in recent polls.. but..

If you ask whether abortion should be completely criminalized, even in the case of a 9-year-old girl who was raped and impregnated by an uncle, and whose parents tossed her out on the side of a freeway afterward to fend for herself, you'll find few who will agree to a total ban. That's why the language reads "criminalize.." in other words, they probably asked whether or not the participant took the more extreme view, which would make the poll a waste of time.
