Downtown LA doesn't have any power.
FNC Alert: A large Portion of Los Angeles has lost power from downtown to the San Fernando Vally.
What a surprise. I suppose when that guy offered to provide a Solar back-up that could power most of california these things wouldn't happen.
Alternates to fossil-fuel? We don't need that shite!

Thats what happens when you de-regulate the power industry, eh?

Thats bad news.
Wasnt it last year around now that the entire northeast US had a blackout?
Oh noes!

Well, when you deregulate an industry with absolutely no incentive to compete or keep prices low, you're going to have problems.

Well, things like "power" are kinda monopoly industries. I would assume it takes a lot of money to set up a power grid and break into the market, you aren't going to get entrepreneurs starting up power stations in their sheds, so de-regulation isn't really the answer mm?
Thats bad news.

I think that was 2003.

Not in this industry, at least until there are viable alternatives to petroleum. What deregulation did was it forced the smaller entrepreneurs out of business and effectively consolidated power in to the hands of a few integrated oil corporations.
Obviously, deregulation only works when it increases competition rather than decreases it; the Telecommunications Act of 1996 is probably the best example of proper deregulation.
Thats bad news.

I think it was 2 years ago.

That's the UK though. I want a forummer in LA posting right this minute that they're out of power.

As bad as it is and as much as I hope it'll be switched back on soon - all I can say is: It wasn't me!
(Let's see whether the West Coast can enjoy a starry night or whether some degenerates will start making trouble? I wish and hope for the first, though!)

No surge in crime and power is returning to the city.

No surge in crime and power is returning to the city.
Glad to hear that.
I remember how amazed some New Yorkers were (when they had their big blackout) just how many stars there really are to see when it's dark :D
Reminds me of the "Nope, helicopter"-scene from Madagascar.

Not to be pedantic, but with a power shortage, how could they

Hey! Bush came through for us!
President Bush restores power to Los Angeles!
Now that he is done cranking up Ophelia, he rushed over to save the denizens of L.A. from riots and looting...
Glad he wasn't worn out from working Katrina!
Yay!
And, yes, if the power had not been restored, not only would I have had to walk down 60 flights of stairs to get out of my building, but there would have been looting, cause that's how we get the good TVs in L.A.

I ddid not see any power outages in this area of Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley). I've been driving around for a bit with some friends to run some errands. I think the media may have overstated it.
There were some reported but that was because of worker error. Not a shortage of electricity.

Additionally deregulating the power industry was perhaps one of the things that may had made things better in the long run. It may have caused problems a few years back, but that was a market error.
Again, No shortages of electricity. Simple human error led to this black-out.

The outages are never uniform. My firm's Sacramento office was briefly affected as well as the downtown L.A. office in which I toil, so...
Some lost it, some didn't. And some went home early cause they couldn't hang!

So, instead of a reputable news agency showing pictures, live, you'll take someone posting "yes, i lost power" or "no i didn't" as evidence?

you know some people make to much out of all of this since 9/11 i've heard way ot many say they think this blackout occurred from terrorists and that video to threat to la which the chief of police himself said no we are not taking it seriously so why would people think that? how paranoid are we these days? and btw the blackout in 2003 did not affect the whole of the northeast - here in vermont we had plenty of power
