OI!! you forget the Belgians!!!!
In the top 3 of beer consuming states, are always Belgium, Germany and Poland.
Best beers are certainly: Belgian of course(:Stella, Duvel, Bush, no i'm not kidding, the strongest beer in the world), Irish (they have some fine brown ones, hmmmm) and English beers tend te be good too, though they're better at whiskey

no, back in the days of the battle of britain the local brewerys made beers in line with the local stations ...customised brews..

Riggwelter (i.e. Blacksheep but stronger) is very nice, as is Waggledance.

I've been to more breweries than i can remember in germany, austria, czech rep. etc, but my personal favourite beer is brewed in a micro brewery in Whistler, Canada. Never tasted a better beer.

Sadly the stomach can no longer handle ale, and i have had to move on to lager and wine. Some of the czech stuff is rather nice.

Belgian Kriek! Whichever you want of it, but it was to be Kriek.

As a dane however, I am obligated to also choose between either Carlsberg or Tuborg. I choose Carlsberg.

Leffe (also Belgian) is also good.
AlanBstard
12-09-2005, 20:56
In England even Carlsburg export has "brewed under liceanse in the UK" stamped on the side. I've a friend who likes specialty ale refers to it as, I think this is right, "Danish Piss". But thats unfair in my opinion its a nice light drink and the stuff he drinks isn't even Danish.

Belgian beer!

i like Grimbergen, Duvel (i'm having one now ;) ), Leffe, Orval and Augustijn

but those are all 'heavy' (i don't know the proper English word) so for general refreshments i like stella, jupiler, sparta pils (really refreshing), i have tasted Geuze Lambique and it tasted delicious too (also very refreshing, and sour)

mmm beer

According to http://www.ratebeer.com/
(worldst largest beer site, US btw), the worlds best beer is Westvleteren 12%vol, from the abbey of Westvleteren, amongst the other great non US (=piss, when not from microbrewers) Belgian beers.

It was the situation till 3 days ago, site changes daily. top 10 is allways nice.

There is a US beer with 40% of alcohol, Cognac strength. Form Boston. Was in the press this summer. Friend of mine (NYC person) tasted it and said that you better buy a real good bottle of Scotch or Cognac instead of that 100$ bottle of beer.

That's certainly impressive, but I would't rate a beer by it's amount of alcohol. Anyway, do you know the name? I'd like to try it.

I think when you get into the 10% alcohol and up range, you might as well be drinking hard liquor. I personally like mine right around 6-9% with just enough alcohol flavor, but not so much that it overpowers the rest of the taste. Which is why I drink beer instead of liquor in the first place; the taste.

German beer (Beck's, Jever, Flensburger, Bitburger, Krombacher,... the list is virtually endless)

Foreign beer I really like include the original Budweiser/Budvar from the Czech Republic, the original Pilsener. But there's others.

Any kind of beer that includes rice or corn for fermentation I do not consider beer.

By the way, I just bought a crate of beer today and will now enjoy my evening Beck's!

Another question to y'all:
Can you find the statistics of how many liters a person in your country drinks per year on average?

Here's the official federal statistic for Germany:

Hubby and I both enjoy a relatively local brew called Black Butte Porter from Deschutes Brewing company in Oregon as well as Guiness. We also got a nice German beer from our local German deli (god help me with the spelling here) Franzenkaner Heffeweissen (?) that is really good. It's better on tap according to hubby. I'm going to have to make more of an effort to find some imports though. I'd like to try some different ones.

Uhh, no. The czechs drink more beer than any other country.

I read somewhere that Czechoslovakia was #5 in amount of beer consumed per capita. When the country was split in two, the Czech Republic jumped to #1.

Businessmen drink beer at their morning break there - it's fairly amazing how much they consume.

Mickey's!

Actually, I'm not sure if I still like that stuff. It's been a long time. I used to love anything that had 'Malt Liquor' and/or 'Ice' on the label. I like many kinds of beer, but don't drink enough different foreign beers to know what the best in the world is. I likes me some Fat Tire, Rolling Rock, Sam Adams, Killian's. My tastes vary too, depending on how many I've had already. I grew up in a place where all beer comes in cans that say 'light'. This actually has something to do with Minnesota Liquor laws that only allow bars and dedicated liquor stores to sell anything with more than 3.2% alcohol.

Is it Samuel Adam's "Triple Bock"? If this isnt what you're talking about, its still up there in strength. I enjoyed it- you sip it from a snifter though. It would never replace Scotch for me, but it was still nice. Went great with a cigar out on the deck.

Best Beer? Thats a hard decision. McEwan Scotch Ale is one of the best I've had, and I've had alot of beers. But then Free State Ad Astra, ), Beamish, Lowenbrau(I don't know how to spell this), Tenet's of Scotland, and Paulanor Octoberfest(once again my spelling sucks) all rank high up there.
The best beer defenitely come from the British Isles, Germany, and Beligium. Though there are a few from the US.

A friend of mine made "Grolsch" into a verb after they had more than a fair share of it.
To grolsch - according to him - means falling down the stairs with a full crate of beer of that brand.
Apparently, the sound that makes comes very close to the beer's name :D

Due to the fact that I live in the US, we don't have too easy access to worldly beers. Though living in Cincinnati, there's always a fresh Warsteiner's Dunkel around the corner. We even have our own German style brewery making some tasty Hofbrau Dunkel.

Thats both humorous and sad at the same time.

I'm remembering arriving at a summer pool party last month, and picking up a case of beer from the trunk by one handle, the handle ripping off and the case hitting the street. A sad, fizzy crinkle and crackle sound and 7 bottles of cold beer & suds flowing under my car.

I like either St. Pauli Girl or Bass ale. Perhaps Samuel Adams. Though many of the aforementioned beers I haven't even heard of, much less tasted. I am sure some of them I'd absolutely love, if I could get it at my local 7-11. Um, but I can't.

Imports are the best. American domestic beers by and large, are not even worthy of the title of "beer". It's like Eric Idle says in "Bruces" on Monty Python At The Hollywood Bowl..... "we find your American beer to be a bit like making love in a canoe. It's f*cking close to water"

I love my imports, but there are some damn good american beers, that aren't watered down. Shiner Boch, Killian's Red, Poney Express, Liberty Anchor Steam, New Belgium, Boulevard, Foggy Bottom, Ying Ling, Free State, Firestone, and many others. I will agree with you that "beers" like Budwieser, Busch, PBR, Miller, Coors, are bad and watered down, but not all American beers are like that.

As A Canadian i am very much in love with beer
American beer for the most part is a strong as canadian water
But i like Miller Genuine Draft

A number of Canadian beers are fenominal
Molson Canadian (on tap)
Alexander Keiths
and Sleeman Draught
are some of my favorites

But i have been drawn to British/Irish/Scotish beers
Guinness Draught is my favorite
Kilkenny
Harp Lager
Boddingtons
and Double Diamond

The Euro beers i have been quite unimpressed with
i like Stella Artois, and Heiniken is ok
but i find that most German beers are unimpressive, but they are in limited supply in Canada

(i believe that a couple years ago (i dont have the book with me right now)the Guinness Book of Records had Germany, England and Canada in the top three of the most beer consumed per capita) (and GENERALLY the American beer i have tried really isnt beer, although some US microbreweries can suprise you)

American Beers:
Free state Ad Astra
Free State John Brown (both are from this local micro-brew in Kansas)
Pony Express Gold
Killian's Irish Red
Shiner Boch
Boulevard Wheat(a Kansas City beer)

International:
McEwan Scotch Ale
Beamish
Newcastle
Paulaner Oktoberfest
Mackenson Triple Stout
Hollandia

I used to think that American beers sucked, but then I realized that Miller, Bud, Coors were not representative of US beers. If you actually look further back in liquer store you can find a lot of good american beers, that aren't piss-beer.
