I havn't seen anyone else mention this, so here we go:

There are a lot of stupid things being said by people that we would generally give the benifit of being too intelligent to say such things. I refer specifically to those in the government.

About.com has been collecting these:

My favorite?

"We finally cleaned up public housing in New Orleans. We couldn't do it, but God did." –Rep. Richard Baker (R-LA) to lobbyists, as quoted in the Wall Street Journal

One of my friends told me about that one and I didn't believe it, until I actually checked it out myself.
Statements like this need to be remembered when it comes to the next elections. Every quote there is sourced for easy reference.

I have a stupid question to ask: The relief funds were passed by the Senate before the house. The constitution says all spending bills must start in the house. Was this money spent unconstitutionally?

You're right, indeed you HAVE a stupid question to ask. :p

"It makes no sense to spend billions of dollars to rebuild a city that's seven feet under sea level....It looks like a lot of that place could be bulldozed." –House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.)
I actually agree with this guy. The older historic area is above sea level and not flooded, correct? Or at least most of it... move the really historical things and then just let nature take its course with the rest of the city. It's something that's going to require a lot of rebuilding over a long time anyways, so just let nature do its thing and try to save the part of the city that's not sinking.

I think it's discretionary funding. The money is able to be spent by congress, they just need to authorize its use.

The dumbest thing said so far was surely

"I dont think anyone could have predicted the levees would break"

Great plan! We should tell that to the Netherlands and Venice too.

Actually, Venice is going to be half-underwater on its own in about 25 years. So good job on that sarcastic remark.

The other quotes here are definitely stupid ones. But THE stupidest? That has to go to one man… “Bush hates blacks.” Need I say more?

the netherlands arnt sinking....
No, but we're very definitely under sea-level. So, if we were to only focus on those bits of land that were above sea-level and kind of stop caring about those bits below it, well... we'll become the new Atlantis. Except that intrepid explorers won't be searching for ancient knowledge, but for soft drugs and porn.

Kanye West - "I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, "They're looting." You see a white family, it says, "They're looking for food." And, you know, it's been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I've tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help -- with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way -- and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us! ...George Bush doesn't care about black people!"

Is that what you mean?

Ok. The link you posted doesn't go to a quotations page, just to the site's home page. Too many ways to go.

And what's wrong with that quote? Sounds to me like the Congressman is simply either playing to the home-folks, or truly believes that God helped those handling the rocovery. How is that something you need to be concerned about???

I'm still shaking my head over that one. How in God's name does a hurricaine hitting New Orleans translate to "Bush hates blacks?" That man is insane.

We'll try this again then.

I don't know what About is doing, but if they do that agin, just search "Katrina Quotes"

And do you really mean "What's wrong with that quote?" Please tell me you are joking. Cleaning out so-called "slums" with feces infected, bacterial soup is not my idea of urban renewal.

Yes, sorry my quote was off. I was too tires to look it up.
