The End of The World?

Sir Isaac Newton's notes indicate he was working on a way to decode the original transcripts of the Bible to uncover the specification for King Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem. However, in doing so his writings indicate that he found the date in which the event in Revelations are meant to take place. The scary part is the date The Year of Our Lord 2060!

Do we have 55years left? Or is this just another lunactical raving from the man who came up with gravity... that and the assumption it was caused by the Earth breathing...

Personally I'm inclined to think he's full of crap, I mean the man got off on stories of nuns being tortured. Still, it freaked me out a little.

To me its just another the world is going to end on this day theory. I just kind of ignore them.

I can't say this enough: Sir Issac Newton is a tit. A complete arse. He deserves to be taken into a crowded square and shot (although I'm told that this isn't possible since he's already dead?).

"Judgement Day cometh as a thief in the night" so trying to predict it is a mug's game. :)

Christianity is basically a really big doomsday cult, and its followers like to predict the end of the world as if it were a hobby, it seems. Best not to pay it any attention - they've been wrong every single time so far.

I thought it was 2012... :p

And yes, trying to predict the actual end of the world is pointless. Predicting the beginning of the end of modern society on the other hand....

I'd say it'll start within 5-10 years.

Nah! :) For doomsday cults take a look at the ecofreaks. Fools like Paul Erhlich, Lester Brown and the Club of Rome have been predicting the collapse of modern civilization since the 1970s and it ain't happened yet. :D

And anyone silly enough to take the Kyoto Treaty seriously is a part of that little Doomsday Cult. :p

Edit: Hey SimNewtonia, thanks for proving my point! ;)

I can predice the end of the world!

In four billion years (Either just before or just after the sun dies) the andromida galaxy is going to collide with the milky way and rip it apart.

Well, being as how I'm not all up into that "judgment of the soul" mumbo jumbo, I'd throw away all concern for the environment, I'd sell all my stocks and spend money like it was going out of style, and I'd party like there was no tomorrow (because, well, there wouldn't be). So yes, knowing when the world will end would be a great asset indeed.

oh boo hoo, peak oil.. you actually buy into that nonsense? Don't tell me you bought into that crap movie "Oil Storm"? Peak oil is far from happening, and it won't because demand would eventually taper off as fuel efficency becomes more of a fact. Look what the hurricane is doing to SUV sales.

Peak oil is like hot pig gas.

As I said, a nonsense movie.

Also read into how much oil Canada has (2nd largest reserves in the world after Saudi Arabia, yet it produces only 2 million BPD - way under potential)... and also read into the fact that fuel efficency has been constantly improving in the past decade.

I predict what will happen is, 2013/2060/whenever will come and pass without event. Then everyone will go "oh no we calculated the years wrong, it's ACTUALLY some other date that's still in the future" - then it's just lather, rinse and repeat if necessary...

If enough people were convinced that the end of the world is near, and did the same thing, then it might just turn into a self-fulfilling prediction... :P

Is this a discussion thread for that Compass program about Newton the dark heretic on ABC last night, because if it isn't it is the weirdest coincidence ever! Didn't he also think that the dimensions and diagrams of Solomon's temple were a blueprint for the secrets of the universe, and of the mind of God, since it ws his temple. It was pretty confronting stuff, that the Roman Catholic Church was the antichrist (kinda been done before), but hard to take seriously, but the guy was a genius, you have to give him some credit.

Ripped apart yes, but life on earth ending no. The two galaxies will simply fuse together and form a new. Thus the density of a galaxy is extremely low so it won't have any serious effect.

Famous last words.

Newton, besides being a brilliant scientist, came up with some of the worst nonsense ever conceived. His theological theories should be kept separate from his actual science - Newton actually spent more time on the former than the latter.

Dark Heretic was an extremely interesting doco, I'll never think of Sir Issac the same again. However he could have at least been a little more specific!
I intend to be spending all my money at the end of the world, and I don't have enough for a continuous splurg all through 2060.

Not only Newton, but Einstein and Hawking also draw heavily on conceptions of a Christian God (although not to the extreme Newton did). The perception of science vs religion may be an inaccurate divide.

What a moron. You're too new to the forum to state that, or have you looked through his 7,000+ posts? Or have you been monitoring his real life in search for that quote coming out of his mouth? Another foolish "didn't see, don't believe" stance.

Anyway!

As for the Andromeda galaxy colliding with the Milky Way, you can't really predict its effects. Maybe the solar system will be safe, or maybe we get another star system to come our way and crash against everything.

At any rate, the Earth will surely be destroyed when the Sun goes supernova. I've read that it's half-way its "life expectancy", so that means it'll collapse in around 6 billion years. We, as humans, will be long gone by then.

The notes that refer to the end of the world were unearthed in ?early 2005? in a vault Jerusalem. The works of Newton are scattered far, sold around the world, and highly encoded making any documents actually held hard to encode. I understood it that these particular papers remained in Jerusalem.
