What is the best city in the world, in your opinion ? I say Vilvek, the capital of Swilatia :)! Well, actually this is about real life here, so I would say Warsaw, Poland.

I'm going to go with Portland Oregon. The best beer in the country, an amazing food scene, arts up the wazoo, and more strip clubs per capita than any other city in the U.S... oh, and censervativism is deffinitly not welcome (as it's often called "little Beruit" by most republican politicians). In other words, paradise ;)

Okay, I agree that Portland is great on a US scale, and I'd probably live their if it weren't so far from my family (and the liberal attitude is a total bonus), but you think it's truly the best city in the world?

Exactly what I just tried to point out.

We Americans, you know how it is

Actually, I think it's just that America is considerably larger than the average country otherwise represented on these forums, so to travel the same distance in Europe, for instance, would get you a few countries, whereas in America, we can be well-travelled without ever having left the country's borders.

Let me clear that up for you..

It is thier opinion that the mentioned city is the best. Now of course, nobody has been "Everywhere" But does it really matter that the city that they mention is in the United States?

Perhaps the reason they chose that city over another is because they Don't travel very much, or maybe they just really like that city. Again, its all about opinions.

For example. I have been to Europe. But that does not change the fact that I enjoy being in Key West, Florida. More than I enjoy being in London.

Further, why is that you, Switalia, are assuming that the greatest place in the world isn't in the USA? If only one place can win, then that one place has to be somewhere.

Thats a little rough, isn't it? A lot of people just never have the resources in their life to be well-traveled. I was 29 before I saved enough to see another country (Japan). While there, I met dozens of people who would love to travel, but simply don't have the wherewithal. I know its possible to travel on the cheap, but some just aren't able.

Chicago.

Friendliest big city in the world. For you drunks out there, Wrigleyville's got the best bars in the States, Goose Island is one damn good micro-brewery. Sports teams up the ass (Cubs, Sox, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawks, Wolves, Fire and the many college favorites). Full of records -- the busiest freeway, highest building (That you can walk in, and I believe with the new antenas, higher than the needles people pass off as tall buildings), longest single-city street in the world, and all that other good and pointless stuff. Park systems that put New York to shame. A microcosm of the whole world in terms of ethnic diversity, best restaurants in the country, best style of pizza and hot dogs ever, and how can you not like a city named after smelly onions?

New York is a sewer. I used to have to drive through it on my way from home to school every now and then. Even been there a few times. If I have my druthers, I won't be back.

Then again, I'm not much a fan of cities in general. Although, Tacoma, WA is pretty nice, at least in the outlying regions. Suburbs are the way to go.

Depends on what you want:
Venice wins for the culture and the atmosphere, although it loses a ton of points for the smell, the cost, and the danger.

Boston wins for the activities (whale watching, tours, etc), the sports, the history, etc, but loses points for it's cost, and it's transportation

New York wins for the food, and the business, however it loses points for cost, crime, smell, transportation, etc.

Amsterdam wins...because

Actually, I'd choose San Francisco. Great culture, atmosphere, moderate costs, good transportation, good business...yeah, San Fran wins. Good for a quick visit, and supposedly very good to live there (I'm on the East Coast, and only have friends in the area, so I can't give a first hand account). The only problem is all the damn hippies.

Transportation off the Island isn't bad if you stick to the mass transit scene. Nothing is better than relaxing on the train, with the paper or a good book. However if you want an easy headache drive into or out of Manhattan, that traffic even before Rush Hour can be a pain.

Also don't listen to Skyfork Long Island is a great place. Malls and beaches, what's not to like? I'd recommend the North Shore if your into photography, those old estates are really something to marvel at.

Well, I don't mind so much. There's usually traffic, but a five minute delay isn't so bad. Real traffic hits at the choke points, like the GWB or BQE. I barely leave the Bronx or Manhattan, and it's not terrible to go between the two.

I don't like cities in general but if I had to choose one I would choose Rio de Janeiro. I think what defines a city's greatness is more of the kind of people who live in them than strip clubs, good restaurants, fancy shops, or tall buildings. And Rio just feels like one big unending festival. Of course they could do a better job with the crimes, otherwise it's perfect!

Hey, it's your thread, but it would have been nice to know that at the beginning of the thread, not 22 posts later. Not to mention just a tad elitist.

What do you consider "well-traveled"? I've traveled to NYC, Washington DC, San Diego, Santa Barbara, La Jolla, Eugene, Butte, and every major city in Texas except El Paso.

I've lived in Nebraska, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Texas.

I've traveled to two other countries: Mexico and Italy, including Rome.

Good enough?

I love my hometown of Houston. I am especially proud of the entire city's generosity in the face of the Katrina disaster.

It also boasts the best cancer center (MD Anderson) in the world, and one of the largest medical centers in the world, including such luminaries as Denton Cooley and Michael Debakey.
We are also known as the energy capital of the world.
The port of Houston is the second largest in the North America, behind only Los Angeles.
Our city has a very diverse population, with remarkably little racial tension, considering.

Also, our theater district has become one of the best in the nation. The Hobby Center, The Alley, Theatre Under the Stars, and Miller Theatre support a lineup of drama and musicals second only to New York City.

Not to mention Houston Grand Opera (I'm a little biased, I sing in the HGO chorus on a contract by contract basis).

Or just ignore if I am not "well-traveled".

I - London, England (So I have a soft spot for history and nicely dressed soldiers :P )

III - Ottawa, Canada (For a place half filled with Frenchmen, it was a really really nice place to be)
IV - Washinton DC, United States (Home of the rebels, not a bad town either)
V - Alexandria, Egypt (It was on the way home...and Zimbabwe ain't a good place to be for the white man)

Seriously, you people need to TRAVEL. I swear, Dubai is the best city. I just have to say Boston because I'm from the area. But Dubai has EVERYTHING! It's going to have the world's biggest mall(Mall of Arabia, to be finished in '08), it has awsome shopping, it's got the coolest airport EVER(Heathrow and Logan are nice, but they're NOTHING compared to Dubai), it's got waterparks, movie theatres, great food, great people, it's government is environmentaly friendly(It gets less than 1% of it's profits from oil), it's got booze(yes, booze. Just because it's muslim doesn't mean no booze for foreigners), a great view of the ocean, and that's just getting started! Sure, it's a wee bit expensive, but if you have the cash, I would DEFFINETLY go to Dubai instead of anywhere else.

Other Asian cities are cool too. I liked Islamabad. It's a pretty little city, not much traffic, ok shopping, nice climate.

God, COME ON. AT LEAST MAKE IT VAGUELY BELIEVABLE. Say "Cardiff" or something.

Dublin for me. Like a relaxed London with more booze.

Cardiff..........................I think you need to stop the drugs as well mate :p . Better than Newport I suppose (Yes I live there for those that haven't caught on yet ;) )

Suburbs are the way to go.
No they are not. Cities have everything, Suburbs have nothing.

Precisely. Suburbs are an unholy combination of two things i love, the good qualities of both somehow being lost in the process.

NYC is. It's a city that's never turned off. And there's so much to do and see there, it is amazing.

Hmm, Detroit City! .... *cough* Nevermind.

Out of the cities I've been too, I'm split between Chicago and Flourence. I think Chicago had more to do that was fun and Flourance had more old stuff to look at. I didn't really go to Chicago to look at any art though... Ah hell, Chicago wins! I want to travel a LOT more though. Just picking a city out of what I've heard, I would go with New York, Tokyo, or New Orleans... pre-Katrina though. I've heard some crazy stuff about Amsterdam too.

Not everyone likes needing a car do do almost everything. Most people do not in fact, and that is why suburbs have nothing.

Adelaide, South Australia. It's far down south right out of the way, only has a population of 4 million people, the hills are just beautiful. It's perfect for me.

Last I checked, Sydney was the one with 4 million. I thought Adelaide only had about 1 million...

Most American cities are boring and just big, I like Boston though. My favorite city in the world would have to be Moscow.

Isn't "Cracow" the English spelling? I know "Krakow" is Polish, thanks for reminding me (it has a diacritic on "o" as well, doesn't it?).

Yes. Boston, Washington and New York are the only American cities I like. Most are heavily polluted s**tholes.
