Well, the series has almost ended, and I think we'll have to reliquish that sacred urn back to the unworthy hands of the English. I just want to know what people have thought of the series so far.
Personally, I reckon luck's been against the Aussies, but you make you're own luck, and for me, it has to come back to Ponting's captaincy.
Thoughts?

I still expect Australia to pull something out and win. I don't know why, but they've been doing it for years. Just as a team looks to have the right on the ropes someone does something amazing and they win.
It's hard not to still be in that mindset when it's been happening for a good 10 years.
Would be nice if England could win though.

I think the luck's gone both ways. If rain hadn't stopped play for so long at Old Trafford, we probably wouldn't be bothered about what was happening now anyway. I s'pose you can complain about Ponting's captaincy, but having McGrath out with that freak injury was the big turning point for me. The combination of that and Gillespie suddenly decidimg to be shit gave England a lot of room to find confidence. There again, Simon Jones being out is kind of a problem, but we seem to be managing with a little help from the weather.
Anyway, best series of cricket I have ever seen, and I'm furious that Murdoch now has his evil global-media-tyrant mitts on test cricket.

However, only Warne has a modium of form, and I fail to comprejend where they will procure the winning runs, they cannot cope with either Hoggard or Flintoff.
Bah, somethin ill happen and australia will win.
Probably the greatest series of test cicket ever. Warne has shown why he's one of the game's all time greats, and has been man of the series. It's looking like England, with 9 wickets remaining and a lead of 40 runs going into the final day are in the strongest position, but Warne can change all that.
England's strength has come from their team spirit and the genuine joy they seem to take in each others performances.

I think thats very unfair. Englands form has been amazing over the last year or so and its been getting progressively better for several years. Its definitely worthy, becuase we've been working at it for so long.
Personally, I reckon luck's been against the Aussies, but you make you're own luck, and for me, it has to come back to Ponting's captaincy.
I dont think "luck" had been against the Aussies. Its England doing there best. England do do rubbish on many occations, but I think when we do win we deserve to be credited. This is the diffrence between Britain and the rest of the world. Because Britian doesnt win as much as everyone else, when we do win we value it more.

They havent had the courage to play twice now.

I would not write it off as a draw just yet - I think it could be quite close and things are getting very tense with wickets falling much faster than england would like.

If you try and win and lose while trying to force the issue what have you lost?

I think its been a great series that has really revived my love for cricket. Both teams have played great and whatever happens its sure to be close!
Personally I'm routing for England (being English and all) but I still tihnk it would be a shame if they win as a result of the wheather.
Bring on a close fought, nail-biteing, RAIN FREE final game!! :)
Whatever the outcome I hope the english public wake up to the fact that they have world class Rugby, Cricket and Rowing teams that are currently possibly the best in the world whose athletes are professional, dedicated, discliplined, are wiling to play for their country without being coherced and make very good positive role models. As opposed to an average football/soccer team whose athletes are often overpaid thugs with terrible discipline, poor sporting attitude, poor role models, who drink too much, swear too much and on occasion try to avoid the national team as it does not pay them enough.
Come on England... Start supporting a team worth getting behind.

Yep, I think you Aussies have best get used to seeing the Ashes back in Pommyland for the next few years. Once Warne and McGrath retire, you don't have much of a strike attack going. Have to hand it to Warne though. At his age and considering his physical state and personal life he still has a massive competitive streak. He certainly carried the Aussies this series.
I can't see another Warne appearing anytime soon. I guess you Ockers have to be content with the fact your country has produced the best batsman (Bradman) and best bowler of all-time. But that's not going to make the next few years easy to swallow when you start seeing your team suffering defeats regularly.

Yah, which totally nullifies the 38 legit wickets he took in ther series. Plus his almost century. Dude the Pie Man is an awesome cricketer.
And it's pretty hard when the only other team member is injured after lords.
But good job Ricky, put England in first at Egbaston. (Against the Pie Man's advice).
Anyway, we had, G O Jones, the only keeper who can't bat or keep, and Ding Dong Bell.

What i really hate is Lillie being called a better cricketer than Paddles?
WTF
Hadlee kept New Zealand in matches and got 400 Wickets.
Because Hadlee could bat a bit it counted against him on some all time greats programme.
Why because they classed him as an Allrounder.

Warne is undoubtedly one of the all time greats. He has accuracy, spin and a fantastic Cricket brain. Plus reliable slip catching and he can knock a few runs. 40 wickets (average 8 per test) in a series is phenominal.
I'm privilaged that I was there at Old Trafford to see him take his 600th wicket. I also saw him play at Liverpool for Hampshire, which is somewhere I've played myself a few times.
I'm so pleased that the best TEAM won though!

Yah, well Hadlee was the only fucker ever to be Knighted before he retired. And he was the all time highest wicket scorer for a while, till Kapil Dev.
So don't get so pissed.

Eh, when did that happen?
Edit: Anyway, Lillee used to go off and take a shower after his bowling spell, so no-one takes him seriously anyway.
Further edit: No he didn't get ranked lower. I checked. Next you'll be crying because the your rugby team doesn't get enough respect.

As far as I can see, Hadlee 7 on the all time list, Lillee 15.
And you should bitch. Englands highest is 10.

Not only do we miss Hadlee, we're missing Chats as well. No-one wants to be the guy at the other end who justs frustrates the batsmen with miserly straight bowling.
Bowling O M R W
Hadlee 23.4 4 52 9
Chatfield 18 6 29 0
Chats had an economy rate of 2.29 for his career. Incredibly it was 1.86 vs Oz.
One wonders as to how many wickets Hadlee got in his career which were due to Chats miserly bowling. Quite a few I reckon. He could always be relied on to tie up one end and annoy the hell out of the batsmen, so when they faced Paddles they would try to hit out and up the scoring.
As I said, no-one wants to be this unsung hero anymore. Everyone wants to go out and take wickets, which is a shame. It always made a NZ test a fascinating tactical game.
Back to the Ashes:
Have to hand it to the pommy cricketers, though. Unlike Paula Radcliffe who can't go more than an hour or so without taking a dump on the side of the road, these guys played for 25 days and during that entire time not one of them looked remotely like they were going to drop their kex and snap one off.

Bowling out Chats is hardly something to be proud of. I mean, ANYbody could do it.
