I wonder....

I have just slain two spiders in my room. Not a small feat for me, as I'm absolutely terrified of spiders on the whole, also I have to say that those two were rather small anyway.
But I can't help wonder why I'm scared of spiders, while having no problems whatsoever with mice, rats, snakes or any other animal that would traditionally set women screaming.
I do faintly remember that a very close friend of mine had been scared of spiders since early childhood and that I most likely simply immitated her in the begining. Later on, I started to feel genuine disgust and fear at the sight of any spider, no matter what the size.

Anybody else having any irrational fears of animals?

I'd have to agree. I have absolutely no fear of any kind of insect, or even scorpions for that matter; however, when I see certain spiders I simply can't stop worrying about them until I do something about it.

However, the bigger, fatter, and fuzzier the spider, the less afraid of them I am. I actually like tarantulas.

Bees. I have never been stung. And I meant to keep it that way. *nod*

But that's it. Snakes, spiders, sharks. No problem. But I run like a little girl from bees. :p

The reason you're only scared of spiders is obvious - it's because you're human, and humans are odd creatures. Brains too big.

I don't mind any creatures much, except for craneflies (daddylonglegs). I don't run screaming, but I don't like being in the same room. Something about them…

They don't freak me out as much as spiders do, but they are giving me the creeps as well... that papery sound their wings make when circling a lamp

My husband has a similar fear of spiders, but maybe more extreme. Once when I was out of town he saw a spider in the front bathroom, and just shut the door and didn't go back in until I was back in town and confirmed that the spider was gone, he put a towel under the door and everything to try to keep it from escaping. I was gone for a week. He had to go to my mom's to shower. :( He isn't afraid of anything else though, not scorpions, bees, wasps, mice, even wild animals in the yard.
He claims that he is afraid because his grandma conditioned him to be. I don't know, all I know is I was afraid of spiders too until we got married and we made a vow that if I would kill all the spiders he would kill anything else. I now have no fear of spiders at all. I wish I could turn off some of my other fears so easily, like my fear of ducks.

So, if I understand you correctly, you kill the spiders, your husband kills the ducks? ;)

Used to have a poodle phobia. Reason is that my aunt had one, and it would attack me repeatedly when I was 2-3, visiting my grandma...she'd yell at me, said it was my fault, and said I should apologize to her dog. To this day, I'm still not comfortable around small dogs, and I hate that aunt.

Yeah I got attacked by 3 or 4 of them when I was about 5, had to get stitches, I know now that they were after the bread I was carrying but, whenever I go to the lake, the ducks are always looking at me like the are plotting something.....

I'm scared of mouth's if one touches me I will freak out! (especially the big one's that ram you because they smell fear or when you wake up with one staring at you and you wonder how long its been watching you naked)

I also don't like it when you got some bird seed somewhere where people feed birds and some smart arse pigeon jumps on you thinking it can sit on you and eat the seeds  (dammit I got scratches all over my chest and it also shat on me)

it's the same with me but instead, with beatles. they're just so disgusting. i also used to have a fear of spiders but the more i was exposed to them, the more my fear lessened and also worked for rationalising the fear.

Well, geese can be very dangerous... there's a reason why the Romans kept them as watchdogs. Apparently, they can be much fiercer.
I got attacked by two swans once, when my brother and me rowed to close to their nest. Boy, they can be mean bastards!
Today, I will just keep my distance from swans. I'm not scared really, but I know how nasty they can get if they feel provoked.

I used to be very wary around moths, and I still am cautious around the big ones. It's not really a fear so much as a healthy dislike for having something fluttering at me in an alarming way. Try turning a light on that's the opposite side of the room to where your bed is - they'll all go there.
What's the big deal with their faces? They're not pretty, from what I've seen, but many insects look worse.

Geese ain't dangerous but they will notice when strangers or foreigners come close to their proximity and start their typical geese chatter.
Your ancient equivalent of a modern motion detector.
Swans, on the other hand, have such strong wings that they can break your arm.
I'm not that fond of spiders, either - but as long as I have one or two in my apartement I usually don't have any other insects :D
But I do have a certain respect for them. If they are too big, I catch'em and tell'em to go play outside!

Wasps, on the other hand, give me the creeps. Their flying sound just makes my hair stand on end. I hate them and will kill them when they get into my room.
I love bumblebees though. And I like bees (and love honey) as well as hornets.

Glad we don't have snakes or scorpions here - those would really creep me out as well!

I don't like any insects but the only things I'm really scared of are spiders. Those things belong in H R Gigers nightmares. Im not scared of scoprions though beyond the natural fear of being stung. Infact poisonous spiders are less scary than regular ones because at least theres something rational to hold on to, instead of just being overwhelmed by that "Oh God I'm gonna die!" feeling that most spiders cause in me.

I'm not really afraid of them, but earwigs absolutely disgust me beyond all reason. I'm not sure why. I'm fine with most other bugs.

What I do have something of a fear of that is related to animals is one of parasites. The thought of microscopic little mites and stuff doesn't bother me so much, but the thought of anything larger living in me is horrifying. Especially my skin. I shudder at the thought of something living in/under my skin, whereas something internal like a tapeworm is merely disgusting. Though, that's less of an irrational fear and more understandable I suppose.

Yea, lobsters. I love to eat them though.
well GEEZ lobsters can bite you!

if youre afraid youll find one under your bed ready to attack, you might be irrational about them

spiders have too many legs, and they feel creepy when they walk across your skin. seems like good reason to be afraid of them. not that im scared of spiders, i dont even bother to kill them when i see them in the house. (i would have to kill a black widow or a trantula though)

moths are harmless so yeah thats nutz

bees and ducks and dogs and geese can all bite you, its not wrong to be scared of them. but i advise that you blow a bee away from you rather than swat it. its less likely to get alarmed and sting you.

I am absolutely TERRIFIED of spiders. Once I saw a gigantic spider in my bathroom and I cried and cried for over an hour, mostly because I needed to use the bathroom. I'm much better at killing spiders now, though. I'm also excellent at spotting any bug in a room. You see, I'm so scared of insects that I've actually trained my mind to scan any room I enter in under a few seconds.

Bug spray doesn't work very well, I've noticed. If you want to weaken a spider before attempting to squish it, try spraying some household cleaner like Windex at fairly close range. The spider might drop, but it'll move slowly enough for you to catch up easily. My mother swats spiders with rolled up newspapers or magazines. BAD IDEA. You need a heavy book, preferably hardcover.

I feel itchy. This subject of spiders has me feeling like creepy-crawly bugs are climbing all over me. UGH.

Like larger craneflies. It's the thin, splayed legs that I loathe, although funnily enough I don't have more of a spider problem than most people… I managed to get to sleep in France when there were MASSIVE spiders crawling along the walls and under the carpets. I'm not intimidated by spiders. Unless you're talking redbacks, I'm unconcerned. Generally if you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. Plus, they'll take care of any other insects. And they tend to just sit in the upper corner of your room anyway.

I have two particular phobias..

Snakes.

Hate em.

Never trust anything that doesnt have arms and legs. (or at least paws).
Ive actually made progress on this.
My good friend used to have a South American Red-Tailed Boa.
He got to be about 5 feet long.

Decent size.

I managed to hold him a couple of times.

But I wouldnt go near a posionous one, if you offered me any amount of money.

The other, is a bit more amusing.
I have a mild fear of clowns.

Cant stand em.

I dont usually get surprised by a clown, so its one thats easily dealt with.
If I am, I usually just have to shake my head at an approaching clown, and the guy understands..

Im currently thinking of asking Lunatic Goofballs to crash at my house for a while, and follow me around to work and stuff, to get over this one too.

Since I deliver pizzas for a living, I think it might help my tips considerably to arrive at a customers door with a clown in tow.

I never really understood why people were afraid of clowns. I grew up with one. I didn't even realize that there were people afraid until I worked as a clown. People kept talking about the movie IT. I watched it, it took me a week to be able to dress back up in my clown stuff, I felt so bad working when I knew there were people that were really afraid of me.
