Nothing shakes you up quite like being told you may have cancer!

I've been having a series of doctor visits and laboratory tests as part of a major physical examination. Yesterday, they told me that I have an enlarged prostate and that my PSA (http://cis.nci.nih.gov/fact/5_29.htm) is up around 15. Not very pleasant news at all, but not uncommon for a man my age.

So, this coming Thursday, I'm going to undergo the pain and discomfort of having my fracking prostate biopsied. :headbang:

[ shrug ] Just another battle to fight.

I'll keep those interested in my welfare ( few though they be ) posted as things progress.

I told my g/friend I wasn't using the damned thing enough! :D

Ah, you'll be fine. And if you have cancer, I'm sure you could fight it. I hope the way you fight cancer is the same way you debated. Because if that's true, you'll be absolutely fine.

Don't worry too much. If you do have it, it sounds like it was going to be diagnosed at a very early stage, which makes it easy to treat.
Plus, cancer is one of the few diseases where it is actually an advantageto be a little advanced in years... so you do have the best outlook, really :fluffle:

Well, the good news is that us old veterans have some really great insurance. I have Tri-Care Prime, which requires that you pay about $120.00/month, but there's no co-pay and after they pay all the quacks ... um ... I mean physicians, they tell you not to pay them anything else! [ huge grin ]

Kewl! Thank you. My PSA test yielded a 19. It's called "moderate," but they're getting ready to lower the scale again anyway, so the physician's assistant expressed concern that it was so high.

Good luck with the biopsy. A friend at work finally convinced me to get a PSA test done. Good results in my case, about 1.5 or something, but that is a test everyone our age should get.

Maybe it's a good omen, maybe not, but I'm starting to know more people that have beat cancer than have died from it.

For those interested in PSA, what it is and how it works. (http://cis.nci.nih.gov/fact/5_29.htm)

Good luck Eutrusca. Remember, "only 25 to 30 percent of men who have a biopsy due to elevated PSA levels actually have prostate cancer." Let's hope you're one of those other 70%.

I hope everything turns out well for you, tests negative and such. As far as the wake of a possible cancer diagnosis goes, try this out and see how it suits you. In March, my ex-girlfriend, who I'd been dating exclusively for 7 months previous, calls me 11 days after we called it quits and tells me shes tested positive for HIV. It turned out the fucking bitch made the entire thing up, or so I hear since, but until my test result came back to my doctors office I was a wreck.

It's not that bad, really. It's uncomfortable, but rarely painful. I've done a few and the patients haven't complained that much - all parties involved are interested in it being as thorough and as quick as possible.

Unfortunately, I know exactly what you mean. My mother died of colon cancer a few years back. Which means that I need annual rectal examinations to make sure that the same thing does not happen to me. While I understand the need for them, they are just not my idea of a good time.

As others have said, the good news is that prostate cancer is very treatable if detected early enough. And, from the personality you've displayed here on the forum, I'd say you're just too damned stubborn to let anything like cancer get you. :D

Why is it that the mentally ill (I'm in that group myself) have such a difficult time *just before* the full moon, while the supposedly normal people wait until the full moon until they prove the popular psych ward saying "I'm not crazy, everyone else is!" ?? It's called a "diaeresis (http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=diaeresis)" (not to be confused with "diuresis (http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=diuresis&x=0&y=0)").
