Favorite composer?
Tell your favorite composer(s), list a few songs he has composed that you like, and link to a sample of his work if you can. Criterion- must be the person who composed the song, not a person who just played it, and definately a person who stole the song from somebody else!
My vote goes to John Williams, for the most badass movie music ever composed.
Well known songs: the Star Wars Hexology's music, the music to Harry Potter (the first three movies of it at least), "Summon the Heroes" from the Olympic Games.
Favorites of mine: "Imperial March", "Battle of the Heroes".
Samples: If you havn't heard songs by John Williams, you have been living under a rock for the past 30 years, and are sending messages in code to the aliens for them to post for you. Go watch Star Wars. Now.
Other composers I like: Mozart, Rachmanenov (spelling), Tchaikovski.
williams shostakovich and wagner.

Beethoven, Mozart, Bach. Williams is a good pick of yours! As is Tchaikovsky. Sergio Leone also comes to my mind.
There's plenty more and usually anyone who composed classic orchestra music has some great pieces of work. The only thing I could never understand is twelve tone music. That's just bad disharmonics for me...

Erik Satie: Gymnopedies 1-3 (sp?)
Mozart, Khachaturian, Borodin, Beethoven, Chopin, and Liszt. Unforutnately, I can't find some good clips at the moment.
I'm a huge fan of Marty O'Donnell.

John Williams is awesome. Saw him live.
Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Hadyn, Robert Young's good too.
I tend to go with the composers that'll perform vocal compositions, since that's what I use to perform with.
Sergei Prokofiev
I like his Cantata for the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution, Op 74

...Sergio Leone also comes to my mind.
Sergio Leone didn't compose any of the music used in his movies, Ennio Morricone did.

Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Bach, Haydn, Brahms, Beethoven, Wagner.
They all are incredible, but they absolutely pale in comparison to Mozart.

I automatically thought to ramble off the masters -- Verdi, Puccini, all those Russians whose names I don't care to spell-check right now, Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, the works.....but then one modern composer kind of flew into my brain. Frank Ticheli. If anybody's ever played his stuff, at least grade 4 or above, you KNOW it's amazing. Probably my favourites are Cajun Folk Songs II (though CFS I is pretty good for lower bands), Loch Lomond, Shenandoah, and the entirety of Symphony No. 2. You can download a bunch of his music for free from here (http://manhattanbeachmusiconline.com/manhattan_beach_music/html/mp3.html) , and seeing this I suddenly realize I haven't updated my Ticheli library in a few months.....God knows what I've been missing out on.....

Andrew Lloyd Webber- Phantom of the Opera..duh, and Jesus Christ Superstar
Gustav Holst- Second Military Suite in F or The Planets.
Shostakavich- Defiant Heart

Hmm... Not very fond of it. Thanks for sharing the link though.
EDIT: Holst is nice too, though I find "Mars" to be far above all the rest of his works--a shame, since if it were indicative, what a wealth of killer music the world would have...
I'll work on that poll...

Ahh but see, the Planets suite is not mean tot be played one piece at a time. It is indeed, a suite. Each planet holds a symbol and tells a story, Mars of war, Jupiter, of Love and Peace...and whichever of the other seven...lol..It's been sicx years since ive played it.
Alright, the poll is up. I put up everyone I could find that was named twice or more.

I think Ben Folds should count. He conducts with his audience. :D

Howard Shore definately. He composed the music for Lord of the Rings, among other things like The Cell and The Fly. My favourite peice by him is probably Riders of Rohan, is the Rohan theme from LOTR of course. But really, any part of those movies works. Beyond that... Mozart, particularly Die Zauberflote, and Vivaldi, particularly the Four Seasons.

Michael Kamen is def my fav, for his work on the series Band of Brothers, an absolute musical masterpiece in my opinion. I also do like Williams, Shore, Holst, and Copland, with his Fanfare for the Common Man.

Personally, my favorite composers are Nobou Uaematsu and Danny Elfman. Uaematsu for his work on the Final Fantasy series and Elfman for just about every Tim Burton movie ever.

Holst is my favorite. I love his First Suite in Eb. I was even given that chance to conduct it myself a few months ago. It was an amazing experience.
I also like Strauss, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Ticheli.
There are many other but thoes are the ones ill list.
Beethoven.
5th Symphony, 9th Symphony, Fur Elise, Minuet in G.
I like all his stuff, though the most famous ones are such for good reason and tend to be my favorites.
