My friend Deayon *Who is black* posted this on my website today and asked it to be passed on. I am now passing it on.

A black man was sitting on a park bench when a white man stopped and spoke to him.
The white man said, "Colored people are not allowed here."

The black man turned around and stood up. He then said:
"Listen sir....when I was born I was BLACK,"
"When I grew up I was BLACK,"
"When I'm sick I'm BLACK,"
"When I go in the sun I'm BLACK,"
"When I'm cold I'm BLACK,"
"When I die I'll be BLACK."
"But you sir."
"When you're born you're pink,"
"When you grow up you're white,"
"When you're sick, you're green,"
"When you go in the sun you turn red,"
"When you're cold you turn blue,"
"And when you die you turn purple."
"And you have the nerve to call me colored?"

The black man then sat back down and the white man walked away....

Pass it on if you HATE racism.

** It has been brought to my attention that the quote is from Malcolm X**

It can be amusing though, right. I like it.

I found it very truthful. We need more things like it in the world today to stop and make people think.

I'm afraid I have never heard black people referred to as brown people. It has always been black or African Americans.

And this thread is not a flame thread either.

I'm not talking about what they are refered to here, but what colour their skina ctually is - with the exception of some Eastern Africans, in most cases they are brown skinned rather than black.

I know what you meant and I agree with what you said about the skin color. It's really weird when you think about it. Why do we use the term black?

it is wierd. I've wondered that many times myself. White people aren't white either but the original post makes a good argument for why caucasians should be the ones being called "colored".

Gah I hate that people judge others by their skin color.

He's right you know. And white people seem to be kind of beige, or eggshell maybe. Even albinos arent really white. its strange that we use such vague terms for something that we for some reason place so much importance on.

I wonder if there is an answer out there or if it's just something that has been lost to time?

Gah I hate that people judge others by their skin color.Because "black Africans" tend to have really dark complexions that are almost black. In the US, there's hardly anyone with that deep a skin tone. At least those have been my observations.

I know and it makes me sick. You have to look past a persons skin color or nationality and get to know them, but alas there are quite a few people that if they see anyone that doesn't look like them they immediately write them off.

Clang. Any evidence that the term 'black' actually originated in the US? If anything I would suggest that the British Isles were probably the origin - IIRC Shakespeare described Othello as 'black'*, while the Colonies seemed to favour using terms such as 'negro' up until the 1950s/60s or thereabout.

* quick fact check.... yup, he did. A quick etymological search gives 'black' first used as a noun to describe people of a particular skin colour in 1625.

Is anyone else here annoyed when Americans refer to blacks (or insert your prefered term) in other countries are refered to as "African Americans."

Also if blacks in America are African Americans, does that make me an European American?

I would imagine that would be annoying as hell for them. I mean if they were British or Canadian citizens I know it would be highly offensive to that person.

Heheh. To this I'd like to add that Rap and R'n'B and Hip Hop are referred to as "Black Music" in Germany (not "Schwarze Musik" but "Black Music").

Also, it's stupid that Eminem (and any other white performer) is considered to be performing "Black Music" when they choose to play music from a particular genre. Then when a black person may create a new genre of music it immediately gets put in the "black Music" bracket.

All this classification simply makes everything become increasingly more exclusive to one group of people or another.

We shouldn't have any classification for race as there truly isn't really any basis for saying that there is a definate line to drawn from one race to another.
If you go around the globe you simply get variations of one extreme to another. I bet you could create a flicker book of every single face there is and have it arranged perfectly so it morphed from one face into another crossing over every type of "race" and sex.

But we have to segregate ourselves like an army food tray segregates it's beans from it's mashed potato.
