My boyfriend lives about 300 metres from Windsor Park. I wish I had stayed with him tonight; the craic there must be immense. I'm not a big football fan, but really, I am so excited ;)

Is the BBC really irritating anybody else over this? They can't seem to say the words "Northern Ireland beat England" - it's "England lost to Northern Ireland". I don't want to get heavily bogged down in semantics, but the latter is clearly less complimentary to us than the former (even though neither is good for England). Let us have our moment of glory - we are generally quite a shite side! :p

Northern Ireland put a dent in England's World Cup hopes as David Healy's goal gave them a stunning winThough admittedly the kind of attitude you're suggesting is very much prevailent in the 606 message boards. <_<

Though I did think the author of the article on the website was generally quite annoyed by England's loss ;) To be fair, the Northern Ireland commentators weren't exactly impartial either, but hey, it doesn't happen for us very often!

I think you can funnily enough correlate analysis of the game and why N.Ireland beat England (see, I said it and I'm English), to the possible tattoos players from each side would have.

I'm sure many of the N'Ireland players possibly have a N.Ireland flag or emblem of some sort tattooed on part of their body. I saw one player with one on their shin.
While in contrast; you have English players with poorly spelt names of loved ones in Chinese/Gaelic writing, or simply the latest fashion tattoo.

It simply came down to passion and pride. The English players didn't seem like they had either of those qualities, not for their nation, not for their fans, or for themselves.

Problem is, this is exactly why England will now always be losers......... I love irony :D

It's kind of sadistic me being English and thinking this way but I don't care, I guess that's my German half speaking. The point is we haven't been considered World Champions since the finals in 1970. Do we act like that is the truth? Ha! We still act like the 11 players that played the final in '66 are going to start in the next England World Cup qualifier.

The players we have, have everything to prove. They do not and have never played for a World Cup winning team. They should remember that.

[EDIT] Hats off to Scotland and N.Ireland for their wins. England could learn a lot.

I still don't understand why our most honest player (Shaun Wright-Phillips) got takne off so early either. Possibly Sven aint honest either.....

He got taken off because it was him or Beckham, and Beckham rules the squad. Idiotically, i hasten to add, because he hasn't really performed since the Greece match in the world cup qualifiers.

Your right of course. But all this stems from Sven's first ever mistake as England Coach. That being to not take the Captaincy from Beckham and give it to the true leader that is Sol Campbell when he very first got put in charge there by eliminating what seems to be Beckham's get out jail free card after a bad game (that being his captaincy). Beckham was only the captain for one game that was against Italy ages ago when all the young players played at the same time. Had that been the case, Sol would be about ready to give the captaincy to John Terry or Steven Gerrard, actual captains of their clubs.

This team is run on how big your name is, not how big your place in the team is.

Undoubtedly, i agree fully there.

I also think it's a very big mistake playing Lampard and Gerrard together unless you have a five man midfield with Makalele or Vieira or Keane in the holding role. Which is why it would have worked Stevie going to Chelsea (but as a Liverpool fan of 27 years standing, i'm glad he didn't :) ), but it doesn't work for England, they don't have such a holding midfielder in the set-up (and they tried Beckham in it? Jesus. The man can't tackle, he has one foot, and he's not the quickest on the pitch either. His right foot *is* divine, admittedly).

I'm also still not convinced by Ferdinand in the central defence. He's more a libero in the italian style. You see it was him that was at fault for the Northern Irish goal.

Now, two years ago if this result had come along, i'd say "i'm so glad i'm Welsh" but...

damn.

Well, technically there isn't actually a Northern Ireland flag - it was suspended circa 1972, but I know what you mean.

Yeah, Go "Nor'n Ire'n" (As they say...)

'Norn Iron', shurely?

I can report that emotions on the lower Ormeau Road appear to be mixed: a loss for Eire, but hey, the English still got routed (even if most people around here view the very existence of a 'Northern Irish' football team as contentious to say the least).

EDIT: but, as ever, the prevalent opinion in Ulster is that as long as the English team get beat the end result is a good thing. Reminds me of when I was going out with a German woman in '98 or thereabouts and she was presented with the dilemma of the German team playing England - she wanted a loss for both sides...

Don't suppose you were watching Newsline at 6:30?

They had Gerry Kelly trying to work out how to say he wanted England to get beaten, without giving support to Northern Ireland.

In the end he just said "I would like the north of Ireland to win" and walked off.

Im sick of Eriksson. And I cant spell his name. unless thats right. This crazy formation and Makalele obsession will be the end of him. WE need Bobby Robson back incharge, at least until the end of the world cup. Sure he cant remember the players names, or his own, but he seems to know what hes doing.

The only english player who can be Makalele is ferdinand, he started out at west ham as a defensive midfielder, much like desailly, who played defense for his club and midfield for france when they won the cup. We should play a narrow 4 man midfield with ferdinand holding, Wright Phillips being Overmars down the left, and Gerrard and lampard in hte centre/right positions. Thatl work.

Possibly, but on average I've probably spent more time having pelasent walks than your average punter as a result, and nowadays if something is particularly worth watching I can normally catch-up on it after the fact through Bit-Torrent sites based on word of mouth.
