Tattoos why get em? What yer got?

If I wasn’t such a typical HUMAN with lumpy body (thanks to my laziness, and antisocial behavior) I'd get a Tattoo, but for me, I’d have to design it and make sure the process is going well. (Meaning that the artist was staying on Model from my original design)
I have several things in mind that I'd like but the most effective tattoos are the one that are well drawn and clear. (Not all muddy) and Simple.
If I had the balls to get one I’d get a two character figure. The characters will be from the world of animation. Buggs Bunny from the Warner Brother’s animation shorts and Space Adventure Cobra from the Japanese animation series/movie/comics from the TMS (Tokyo movie shinsha) productions.
Both characters in my opinion are wacky and get away with so much in their perspective worlds, Lupin the Third may replace Cobra as the Bugs Bunny of Japan but in this case its just a preference, I love both though. I recommend the Lupin the Third animated movie: The Castle of Cagliostro as an intro to this character, a well made movie for all ages.
So I have Buggs and Cobra, now just tad info on both, Buggs eats carrots and it has become his trademark image to chomp on the veggie when doing his shtick. Cobra on the other hand was a hodgepodge of action, comedy, and adventure in a bizarre sci fi setting centering on Cobra who doesn’t know who he is and winds up getting the enormously politically powerful Galactic Patrol and Space Mafia after him all the while taking absolutely nothing too seriously. HIS trademark image was the Psycho-Gun a weapon that was attached and is the entire length of his left arm, we find out that Cobra was a Space Pirate and raided and manipulated both the Galactic Patrol and the Mafia hence they are always hot on his trail.
So With Buggs, carrot in hand and Cobra, Psycho-Gun in "hand" I'd have them in a medium shot (chest up) Back to back, Cobra looking at Buggs slyly positioning the Psycho-Gun in front of him pointing upward but close to his chest, soft gray smoke billowing out the muzzle. While Buggs mimicking Cobras pose and facial expression, but in place of the arm length gun Buggs is holding his Carrot with his hand and out stretched pinky finger.
So what yer think, too moronic for a tattoo? Not a fitting image in the world of tattooists? What yer got the mind? And What yer got on the body?

To be honest, I've seen worse. But I've also seen better.
I don't really think I would ever consider getting a tatoo of a cartoon character. Overall, I love cartoons... but I would feel somehow silly getting a tatoo of one. Please do keep in mind that you will have that for the rest of your life.
A friend of mine got a little unicorn when she was 18... and is thinking of a way to get a cover-up for it now. Those are tricky, and it means you'll end up with an even bigger tatoo, just to cover the one you don't like any more.
Me, I just got one this year. It's my own design, I thought hard before getting it, and I chose a place where I can hide or show it if I want to, and also a place I can see it myself. I never understood the point of getting one where you can't see it yourself...
Here it is... (http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b24/cabrawest/.Tattoo.jpg)

I've thought of getting one, but I can't think of a what to get, and getting one just for the sake of getting one seems dumb to me. A tatoo should mean something, in my opinion.

I would love a tatoo, but I don't know what to get. A life-long scar should look great.
i've got a tattoo at the back of my neck/ upper back. it's my family crest-it's is a gold lion with three stars above it. it's covered by my hair so not many people don't notice it unless i show it to them, of course.
I've often considered a tattoo. But now that every ambercrombie clone has one I don't think I want one anymore.
They used to be cool and have a mystique of rebelliousness. Now, it's like candy that everybody has and is now less desirable.

Not quite ... if you want, you still can make your own candy ;)
I got mine because I like the aesthestics of tattoos, and because the motive has meaning to me. Otherwise, there would have been little point.

I thought long and hard about the two tattoos that I wanted, and subsequently have.
They are a rose & rosebud on my upper right shoulderblade, and a dragon style phoenix (meaning it has tail feathers and head feathers but rest of body is scaled) emerging out of the ashes with a celtic cross around its neck (my own design) on my left ankle/calf.
Personally, I thought about both designs for over 2 years each before I went and had them put on. I pulled them out and asked myself Is this something I can live with for the rest of my life, is this something I'd be proud to show my grandchildren some day, and is it in a place that it's not gonna become distorted if I gain any weight? (aka stomach if you have kids can stretch out of whack, butt if you gain weight, and so on...)
When I confirmed that I knew what I wanted, I went around to about 10 local tattoo artists where I live and looked at their portfolios, watched them doing artwork on their other clients, and asked lots of questions about their style, thoughts, and so on. I also showed them the EXACT design I wanted. If they thought they couldn't do it, they told me honestly. If I thought I didn't like their style, they didn't take enough time, weren't careful enough, etc, I eliminated them.
In the end, I wound up with two tattoos I'm VERY proud of - and after 10 years for my large rose/rosebud, and 5 for my phoenix, I still get complements about their color, design, and sheer difference to everything else.
I don't know about everyone else, but to me, my tattoos have meaning and were done at turning points in my life. The first was when I came home from a long absence abroad, and realized that life is really what you make of it - either you reach out and pluck it and risk getting pricked, or you don't. I choose to chance the pain. The second? When I lost a close friend and I thought, a part of myself (I didn't want to go on but I did). The phoenix says something about my faith in general. Every time I see it I am reminded that maybe I think my life is destroyed and I'm completely devistated, but my religion & faith (yes, I'm catholic but to each their own) comes back, and restores my belief in humanity - and I re-emerge from the devistation stronger and more alive than before.
I guess what I'm saying is that make sure they truly mean something to you - it helps make the difference between loving them in 50 years, or wanting them removed/covered up.
Good Luck with your tats.
~Rose

I propose we all get a NS eye type tattoo on our arms:
http://www.nationstates.net/images/jg_new.gif
Then we could all belong to a secret club where we solve crimes, beat people up, form a race-horse-buying syndicate, smuggle drugs across the alps, avenge wronged prositutes, realese cobras into young offenders homes, harvest organs from the frail to give to the hungry, grow mostaches, play polo on elephant back...
Rose's tattoo's sound very cool and meaningful.
Mine on the other hand isn't too meaningful at all. I have a blue frog with a slim five point star behind it on my right ankle. I love frogs so thats why i got it, other than that there's not much meaning to it. I designed it myself, but the lady that did it kind of screwed up on it so i'd like to get it redone.

I got my tattoo on my 18th birthday, me and my brother are getting a brother's tattoo on his 18th. For me the tattoo is a rite of passage. I got mine in response to a rather difficult time in my life. The design itself does not mean anything, but everytime I look at it, I am reminded of my inner strength, and i do not think that I will ever regret getting it, because of what it represents to me. So if you get one, dont just do it because you think tattoos are "cool," if you do you will probably just end up regretting it.

Normally the person who has that tattoo knows, just ask them.
The idea seems to be that you can get a whole word in a decorative charater somewhere on your body, without haveing to come up with a meaningful motive as such..

Uhh... Well.. It doesn't have to be as much as mine.. I'm a piscies and a girl, so a bit moody and mystical... but it was the gist of the idea make it mean something to you - because you have to have it the rest of your life.
My advise for Do NOTs - DO NOT get a tattoo of the following:
a) Someone else's name :fluffle:
b) Words in print larger than a normal piece of paper (this is your body IDIOT - Not a billboard or a t-shirt)
c) "trendy" type things which in 10 years will be a trivia question
ex. the name of your latest band, a likeness of your current girlfriend, your favorite TV program that gets cancelled after only 3 episodes; or my personal favorite - Free O.J.
d) Anything you wouldn't want your family to see later - ex. Charles Manson on your forearm, something pornographic, or etc. :headbang:
Pretty much, all of the above will cause you to want to have them removed at some point... and I don't care to be there to watch you try and hack your ex's name off your finger, let alone envy the tat artist/doctor who has to fix ya up with something else.

I have two tattoos so far. They're only 2 years old but so far no regrets. The ones I have are for aesthetics but have no real meaning to me. The next one I'm getting does have a very personal meaning for me. None of them are bigger than a couple inches. I always give myself a long long time to think about the tattoo before I get it to figure out if I really want it forever.

I have 10 at the last count. My tatoos tend to act as a reminder of past times in my life. Most were done when I served with the Royal Navy and therefore remind me of the place where I had them done and the friends I made at the time.
For first timers, I would suggest making at least THREE visits to the parlour before finally deviding on a pattern. Any reputable tatooist will have no problem with browsers. Secondly, talk to the guy! Nearly all tatooists are heavily inked themselves and are generally very helpful and nice guys. Thirdly, get it done in a sensible location - either back or upper arm. It won't hurt so much as any tender spots and if you don't like it it won't be so obvious.

I have this (http://images.art.com/images/products/large/10048000/10048551.jpg) on my upper left arm. I got it because I'm an artist, I've always been fascinated by the work of Escher, and the piece itself spoke volumes both to and about me. It transalated very well as a fine line work Tattoo.

I think it get's a bit tricky if you want designs in different styles - they clash easily. If the two ideas you have are in a similar style, I don't think it should be a problem.
An example :
I think it looks kind of messy when you see people who have a skull on their arm, a chinese tiger on their back, a tribal on one leg and a portrait of Jimmy Morrison on the chest.
On the other hand, I once saw a woman who had a thing for dragons. So she had about 10 dragons of all sizes all over her body. As they were all chinese dragons, it looked really good. Although I don't know what it will look like when she gets older...

I have three tatoos; a rather large, colorful butterfly on the back of my neck/upper back; a small butterfly on the lower right leg and a rather large rose/fire/water/infitity symbol on my left leg that starts at the ankle and goes almost to the knee. And, I plan on getting a few more. The problem is is that tatoos are sooooo addicting. Or at least in my case they are. The ones I have all mean something and are connected to important times in my life, esp the last one. The strange looks, the attention, whatever-- people who have tattoos don't necessarily do it for the attention, for the rebellion, etc., but rather, do it for the pure fact of expression, or marking a milestone in their life. It is nothing different than buying certain clothes or wearing your hair a certain way. And yes, we know they are permanent (God, if I had a nickel for every time i heard the comment "You know, they are permanent..." when I tell someone I have a tattoo-yeah, no crap? i thought they came off in the shower.....) just don't judge us or look down on us for having the tats.

That's the wrong question. I don't think I ever met anybody who got a tattoo because he/she was disatisfied with his looks.
It's more to do with expression of personality. People have the desire to express themselves outwardly according to the way they feel inwardly. Which is why different people will dress in different colours and styles, have different hairstyles and colours, wear jewellery... none of these are worn because the person is generally disatisfied with her looks, but because it is felt that they are an improvement of said looks and/or an expression of idividuality and personality.

b) Words in print larger than a normal piece of paper (this is your body IDIOT - Not a billboard or a t-shirt)
One of my best friends has "Fly high fly free" across her lower abdomen in a curve, in ornate lettering, all loops and stuff. It's quite large, maybe font size 80 or so, it stretches from hip to hip and looks fabulous! So I wouldn't always agree with you on that.
I don't have any tattoos yet. I have one design that has evolved so much since I first started it (about 4 years ago) I am so glad I didn't rush into getting it. It has significant spiritual significance for me, it will go on my lower back after I've lost some weight. As I'm in the process of doing so I didn't want to get it done on an area that would affected by the weightloss, until after. Anyway... It's symbolic of the chakras and I really love it.
I have a second idea that I want on my calf, but haven't settled on a design yet. I want a fairy, I've tried drawing what I see in my head, but can't get it right. I like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6196752385&category=86931) Beth Hansen design, but don't want any colour. Tricky.

That fairy wouldn't be hard for a GOOD artist to do as line work at all. I lucked out and live next to whats possibly one of the best body mod shops in the country.
http://www.tattoocharlies.com/
I've seen people coming in from other countries getting work done at this place while they're here.
I was just talking to a friend the other day about how I've been in alot of tattoo parlors and they all kinda have that hole in the wall bar atmosphere. More like a biker hang out than a place of business. Charlies on the other hand seems like your there for a service. And what amazes me, is that they have enough business that they are actually VERY picky about what they will or will not do. Seems like they set their standards on doing only what they KNOW will look good. After all, every piece they do is an add for the shop. But for example they won't....
1.) do anything below the ankles or wrists
2.) do a color tattoo that isn't outlined in black
3.) do any surface piercings (eyebrows, etc..) due to the increased complications
most shops will take anybody that walks in and do anything they want. The artists here will straight out tell you if they think theres a possible flaw in your design.
I've gotten two tats done elsewhere, and five done there, with the rest of my shoulder piece coming in the near future. And nine of my ten piercings have been there. The only one that wasn't, an eyebrow, ended up having to come out.

Oh and I will be getting my nickname/online name put on as the cap on this shoulder piece in a VERY large font size. Words typically look bad because so many people get them just to get them and they end up not having any real work put into them. Where as actually drawing art takes some effort on the artists part.

That was the first one I got, I was 19 on a spur of the moment thing.. didn't put no thought into it.. although it is original, the artwork isn't good at all! It's not big so I won't have a hard time making it better looking or covering it... btw.. it's a pink elephant.

I would love a tatoo, but I don't know what to get. A life-long scar should look great.
Ahh.. reminded me of my self inflicted lighter and cigerette burns on my arms. Lighter burn on upper left arm, single cigerette burns on both forarms. They are not pretty, but could've been worse. The worst is the lighter burn.. but o well had it since I was 15. It's part of me now. And no way am i putting a tattoo on my upper arm to cover it.

Most of the posts seem to be from young people that think this is a wonderful thing to do. Well, I'm an old man and have a different point of view. If you get a tatoo make sure you can cover it with normal business clothing. In business a tatoo is considered lower class and offensive to conservative customers. I have some very good young people that would like me to employ them. But if they have a tatoo or piercings (Other than women with one hole in each ear) they are automatically rejected. Sorry but there are plenty of potential employees. If even ONE customer would object to your looks you are unacceptable. This is called nonverbal, artifactual communications. It is a much stronger way of communicating than verbal communications. So it doesn't really matter how well educated you are, if your looks turn off the listener before you can open your mouth, you are more than worthless to an employer. You are a detriment. If you really want a tatoo, wait until you are well established in your desired profession. Once you have a great reputation, a little nonconformity is more acceptable. But I'll bet by then you won't have any desire for the tatoo or piercing. Sorry if you think this is unfair. Business is about money. Money is about customers. Even if 90% of the customers didn't object, no businessman is going to lose 10% over the looks of his/her employees.

I wouldn't consider myself young any more, and I've been working in customer-contact professions a lot over the years. The tattoo I have can be covered by busines clothing, however I was never asked by my employer to cover it. I think it always has a lot to do with the style, the motive and the position.
But it definitely is good advise to have tattoos only in places where you can easily cover and hide them if you want to. Just in case.
Btw, nobody ever objected to my piercings, either. ;)

I'm 30 years old, so I guess I'm neither old nor overly young. Most part of our body is covered when we wear normal business clothing, which I would define as some kind of suite. So unless you are not working at a strip club almost every tatoo can be easily concealed. Also not everybody works with customers. I, for example, rot the whole day in a lab, so it's not possible for me to scare away costomers. Plus, I have to wear long trousers at work so nobody sees my tatooed lower leg anyway. Other people may be construction workers, who are, at least in Germany, frequently tatooed.

I made some photos of my tatoo, but they were made with my cell phone so the quality is not that good.
Front (http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/7846/front8gz.jpg),back (http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/5869/hinten6jf.jpg),left (http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/8896/links2hk.jpg),right (http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/2653/rechts7zn.jpg)
The tatoo is still unfinished. At my next tatoo session the colour will be added. My last tatoo session was only yesterday so it's not healed yet and looks a bit strange.

That looks like you only just got it?
Why did you get the ivy?
I hate tatoos but must admit I was once tempted to get the name of my band put inside a crucifix on my left shoulder.

As I wrote, I got the last tatoo session yesterday. That's why I'm sitting in front of my computer at friday night instead of being in some club.
I chose the ivy, because:
1. It's timeless and won't look to stupid when I'm 70 years old.
2. When it is finished it will look kind of dark and sad or something .
3. Ivy is a symbol of eternal life (like other evergreen plants), that's why it is seen at cementries quite often.
4. I like ivy.
5. I wanted it since I'm 16.

I was thinking about getting a hammer and sickle on my right wrist to show my support for socialism. Would this be to rebellious cause im just trying to find something that would show my support for socialism not to anger people if theres some other flag or design for socialism or communism could someone tell me. Also how bad does it hurt on the wrist I heard it hurts a lot but im just wondering nothing to big either.

It's quite unpleasant to be tatooed at the wrist, but it's not that bad.

Ok awesome cause I really want one on my wrist but who knows maybe I'll stick with the old ankle deal just cause for jobs and such might not look so proffesional with a hammer and sickle on my wrist.

They can't be very good at biology, then. Biochemistry is an essential part in all fields of biology...

You don't have to know to much about chemistry to understand the basics of biochemistry. You just have to be good in memorising things.

I see, and what socialist country are you planning on living in? About the only ones left are Cuba and N. Korea. Or do you expect a capitalist to hire you? Someday maybe tatoos will become acceptable in society. (I remember when the only women with pierced ears were either sluts or immigrants) These things do change. But if you want a professional job in the next ten years. And you want to compete on a level field with those without tatoos--You are dreaming. If you don't mind sitting in the back room, hidden from view and never in line for a promotion to a position that meets the customers (that's where the $$ are)---go ahead and tatoo anything you want.

Depends on your field. I have a discreet tattoo on my ankle, and it's never hurt me. Clients can see it (and the muckity mucks who promote me) whenever I wear a skirt or capris. I'm a brand manager in marketing; I think engineers view marketing with a bit of distrust and bemusement at the "artsy" folk so they expect that sort of thing!
