56K Warning?

The Noble Men

On many picture based threads i.e The Babe Thread, they have a 56k warning. But I wonder, does anyone actually have 56k anymore? If so, are you happy with it?

We recently changed to Broadband (half my fault). I LOVE broadband, it's SO useful!

What do you mean, fault? You make it sound like a bad thing.

*sniffs* Spare a thought for me, as I am on 56k... and with no broadband in sight, I am forced to be insane for my own amusement.... Wibble! Teapot! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

I have a hint for everyone putting "I don't know." If you don't know, you don't have 56k, because you would know if you had to dial-up to get on the internet or you don't know because you are on a network, and no network has 56k.

Picture threads didn't bother me when I had dial-up - I could just cancel if it was taking too long. They're more of a problem now I have broadband because if I don't notice in time, it can download several megabytes before I cancel - which causes problems with my monthly download limit...

I would think that the less-technically-minded people wouldn't know that their dial-up connection runs at 56kbps, just like they wouldn't be sure of their processor speed (just that it was a Pentium 4 or whatever).

Well 56k is interchangeable with dial-up, if your computer was bought in the last 5-8 years, your computer comes with a 56k modem (whether your line runs at this speed or not is another thing entirely). But if you have dial-up, you would know it.

56k was the scourge of the internet...

Now its download limits (in the UK anyway).

Yay Plusnet!

I still have 56k - in fact, I have a 56k modem on a lousy connection, so I actually end up running at about 40kbps. It leaves a lot of time for thumb-twiddling and staring at walls.

I would dearly love to get a better connection, but I am poor and can't possibly afford to. It's very sad. :(

I had a 24 MBit/s ADSL line until recently, when I stepped down to 8 MBit/s because I was never using all that bandwidth and thus could no longer justify the expense. The 8 MBit line I have now is quite sufficient and it costs me around the equivalent of €27/$33 per month. It's reasonable, I think.

Yup, I've got 56k, and no I'm not happy with it. I, however, can't get DSL or cable where I'm currently living and cannot afford to move. so I guess I'm stuck. :(

Can I come and live with you? ;)

4MBit is the best we can get over here but you need to live within a stupidly short distance of an exchange to stand a chance of getting it :\
