I've been boycotting Yahoo! for years because of the fact that their service sucks, but I guess I could tack on an ethical argument for it. What they did was really shitty, anyway. It's so disgusting to see all these companies bowing down to Chinese pressure, and how quickly and easily they can forget that it's a brutal dictatorship with no regard to human rights and basic liberties whatsoever.

But, yeah, capitalism is all about the market and money. Who cares about those oppressed when you can make a quick buck off of them?

Yahoo is pretty much required to give up that sort of information if the government asks for it. At least that's the impression that I get.

Boycott Yahoo? I didn't think anybody still used any of their services anyway. Everything Yahoo can do, every other similar online company can do better.

But hey, I can understand their reasoning. When the vampire rises, do you want to be his immortal slave or his dinner?

So its not only paying taxes that Yahoo could help Violate Human rights.

What does paying taxes, the incompetent Bush administration have to do with YAHOO's weak-knee'd approach to the Chinese government and their willingness to sell out a private user so that they don't incur the wrath of the fucking wannabe commies?!

No, it is their fault. They give a privacy statement when you sign up, as well as a ToS (Terms of Service), and they have no obligation to give away that information, because first of all, YAHOO is not in China, even if they have a Chinese subsidury.

I heard Google gave the same agreement to China -- is that correct?

All these corporations are knowingly selling out the rights of their own country to make profit in another. They know it's wrong and might even be illegal, and that's why they create "subisidaries" to squirm around all the regulations that might make it harder to turn a profit off oppression and civil rights crimes. Oh, no, it wasn't us, they claim, it was those other guys who just happen to work for us, only we set up the papers to make it look like they don't.

Here's a question: The US does have laws and regulations that could punish Yahoo from doing things like this. Why are they not enforced? What benefit could there be to the US in allowing US service companies to be spies and informants for a foreign government? I'm thinking specifically of the filters that let Yahoo etc. not only censor internet access but trace usage back to individual consumers. Those filters were demanded by China but designed by Microsoft who swears up and down they would never, NEVER!, use them on any other market in the world (unless the local government asked them to, of course).

Kids, let's enjoy these forums while we can.

addition re not hijacking: I don't mean the Bush admin. This goes way beyond who happens to be in office. It's about a kind of backroom power dealing that bypasses the political system altogether.

They aren't punished because without the corporations who will fund these presidents. Face it America is dependent on corporations thus the reason they can get away with stuff they are not suppose to do. (Also why presidents try to gain their supports.)

Exactly, and this blows away any pretense they have of not being total whores. I suggest that, while it's both fun and good citizenship to chase politicians around (pinatas!!!), we should never forget who the real players in this game are. The corporations know no borders and can do more damage than all the pols on Capitol Hill put together.

And that's why I don't support tort reform. :D

However, someone who uses thier(Yahoo's) service to critisize the Gov't in what is effectively a totalitarian nation while they (Yahoo) has a contract w/ said nation isn't very bright.

I doubt Yahoo ever knew the charges against the guy.

The police would go to the courts and request an order to release certain logs. The courts would issue such an order, and it would be presented to Yahoo, which like any other company, is bound by the laws of any country in which it operates. Yahoo would then dig out the logs and hand them over.

At no point do the authorities have to make clear the nature of the case they are building. For all the company knew, they were helping catch yet another internet pervert.

I don't expect privacy on the internet. It's like having your conversation in a restaurant where anyone can hear you. But consider:

You want to make money in a certain market.

To get in there you have to abide by the laws of that country. Fair enough.

The country in question is a totalitarian dicatorship with a lengthy record of human rights violations against its own citizens (as well as a record of seizing private business holdings and antagonism towards outsiders  ).

The regulations they want you to follow include tools to allow them to use your service to spy on and track their citizens.

Why would you think that such an arrangement would not put your company in the position of handing over political dissidents to uncertain, but certainly unpleasant, fates?

So, the issue is, knowing this, should they have gone into China at all? Not only did they, but they covered their asses legally beforehand. I say that proves that they don't give a crap about anything but their quarterly reports, including human lives, and everything the anarchists say about them is true.

What choice did they have? Try this:

You're one of the biggest internet service providers in the world. Hell, you may even be a consortium of all of them (as they really are at the boardroom level).

You dearly want to get your mits on all those Chinese, but the government is trying to dictate how you do business.

Why the hell should you play by their rules? They want to take over the world. They need the internet to do it. They can't get the internet without you. You're Godzilla.

Stand your ground. They will cave in the end, because they need you more than you need them.

And just maybe, you'll have undermined their totalitarian control enough to save your karma, if not their citizens.
