I had heard that the N.O. police were taking food, medicine and water, but shoes?

She totally gets MODED by the reporter.

There was a police officer on the radio this morning that said a bunch of officers quit and a couple shot themselves.

CNN is now reporting that as many as 500 police, out of 1600 total, deserted their duties. Apparently many left before the going got tough. There have been persistent reports of police looting, though some have been explained by the police being cut off from normal supply of food and water.

There are some questions that will need to be asked when this is over.

That police force is one of the worst paid, trained, and equipped in the country (they have to buy their own guns, for God's sake!). There is also a lot of corruption and crime in the force, and I think many of the honest officers simply couldn't take it anymore. They tried, and were overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the problem. It's sad, and easy to place the blame. This is directly the fault of the staggering corruption that permeated the government of that city, and requires full investigation and possibly impeachement of the mayor from power.

The real looting will begin when that corrupt state and the city government get those billions in federal dollars.

Like, "Those are some nice shoes. Where did you get them?"

all of your examples of what they are stealing seem okay, shoes are necessary for movement, because the water would soften up your feet. It is only when they are taking TVs, and other stuff like that, except maybe mobile radios, that i think would also be acceptable. Several people will die before help reaches them, therefore it is okay to take essentials, the ones that loot the wrong stuff are bad apples, sure, but the rules down there are different now, and considering there is no more economy, i think it would be okay.

Many of those policemen preform valiantly. A few do not. I don't understand this. Most police officers would stick to their duty. In fact, I think that duty-bound individuals are usually the ones attracted to the job. I guess it's like those priests in the sex scandals: who can you trust these days?
