where is Earth in the galaxy?

yeah, ok, i've been watching too much star trek lately (yay) but this is a legit question i've been wondering for some time: anyone know of any maps of our galaxy, and/or where Earth is in relation to the whole?

and if it hasn't been worked out yet, why not damnit!?

on a geekier note, any other trekkies know of a nice map of federation space or some kind of map of the quadrant divided up between the different species/whatever? its probably wishful thinking but i can but ask :)
i've checked memory alpha (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Main_Page) but no luck so far

If I remember correctly, Earth is at the far end of the Sagittarius arm of the galaxy; basically, we're in the boonies.

National Geographic posted a map like that about five years ago...
(who's the geek now?)

I have it in my house somewhere... though, you might want to look for it on the interweb instead of coming over to my house to take a gander at it. ;)

Actually, I think we're further out, Orion's Arm. <--Though that part's true. I'm not sure if it's further out than Sgittarius. I had to do a project on this topic once. Either way, it isn't exactly inappropriate to say, "Where the F*** am I?!"

Shit...we're the rednecks of the Universe. I bet other lifeforms stereotype us horribly.

There is a site called the Daystrom Institute Technical Library (http://www.ditl.org/), and in the Politics section there are a number of maps for the different dates. That entire site is a gold mine of Star Trek information.

Here are links for 2 of the maps:
Entire Galaxy in 2373 (http://www.ditl.org/politics/hedgalactic.htm)
Major Powers in 2373 (http://www.ditl.org/politics/hed2373.htm)

Because of the way the site is set up, I would not use the last 2 links, and start from the homepage. The guy running it has it styled to look and act like the computer screens from the show, and makes pretty heavy use of frames.

So much for that "center of the universe" crap the Vatican was spewing for all those centuries...

Thankfully they retracted that statement...
