Welcome to the what the f--udge awards. This special edition will award acts related to Hurricane Katrina.

NOMINEES FOR THE KATRINA WTF AWARD ARE:

NEW ORLEANS(and its placement).
A city built underwater. Not uncommon in many parts of the world, and a very usefull way of getting more land. However, building such a system in a place hit regularly by hurricanes, it is not such a smart idea.

RESIDENTS OF NEW ORLEANS(not the ones who left)
Watch the news. Most of the people you hear about are the people who decided to stay durring the hurricane that was category FIVE. They were told to evacuate, and they didn't! And if that wasn't stupid enough, a few more idiots decide to SHOOT AT THE PEOPLE FIXING THE LEVIES! :mp5:

THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY.
"FEMA does stuff domesticly, so let's merge it with DHS, and take away all the funding! That way, when the "Big One" that FEMA and others have been predicting for years hits, there will be insufficient funding! What a WONDERFUL idea!" We KNEW there would be a hurricane or other major storm that would hit this year. It happens EVERY YEAR! Sure, we didn't know it would be Cat.5 (perhaps we should rename it Kat. 5, in honor of Katrina :) ), but we knew it would happen.

GOVERNOR OF LOUISIANA
Let me get this straight. You have a Navy ship volunteering to help you out, providing water and other services to your citizens. and you REFUSE?! WHAT THE F--udge!

Vote please! If you have someone else to nominate, please say so!

Well you can't put pressure on all the citizens of NO who stayed, if someone doesn't own a car, and all the taxi's/buses left town, how do you suppose they get out, walk?

I'd give it to the citizens who decided that a natural disaster means you're allowed to steal, rape and kill because there's not police to stop you.

People always seem to assume that everyone can get up and leave whenever they feel like it, just like any good little rich or middle class citizen, eh?

Wake up call! Some people don't have the funds to even get through the month, much less get out of town - at the end of the month - when those on fixed income pretty much have no money to their name. Notice who, for the most part, was left behind? The poor, the elderly, and the sick (oh, and the health care professionals, police, firefighters, and military who had to stay to try and help people out and keep the peace).

Granted, there were (and always are) some people who say, "Sure I could get out, but I'm gonna stay here and stick it out. Everything will be fine!" but I don't think we can say that this describes even most of those left behind.

I nominate the mayor of NO, Ray Nagin.

He had busses to move the immobile to shelter, but didn't even try.

He had shelters, but no food and water for his people.

Not even generators to provide light, let alone air conditioning.

Never occurred to him he might need security there.

He provided them a hot, dark, dangerous dungeon without water if they were able to walk there.

He let his poor people down in the most fundamental of ways - he never even thought about what they might need. Complete lack of caring.

There should be an investigation into how the poor of that city were treated by the man whom they trusted to care for them in an emergency.

There will be lots of blame to go around on many levels, but I definitely blame the mayor for not having the basic preparations ready prior to the hurricane season.
