What is/was your college major?

Stangely as it may sound, this is actually ,my first post in the 'General' forum. Also, besides threads sent to me by way of Instant Messaging, this is my first time to even venture in 'General.' Sooooo....w00t.

Anyways, to the topic at hand.

While sitting here in the library on campus, I decided, "Hey, I'd [randomly] like to know what everyone studied on NS." So tell me, what did/are all of you studying?

I, personally, am an Urban Planning major, with an emphasis on Transportation and Mass Motivation Design. My goal is to lead the transportation department, and design highway systems and revamp mass transit. However, a lot more goes in tyo Urban Studies, than just mere planning. In fact, this course is extremely psychological in nature. One can't just plan a highway, you have to plan on what the affects will be on the citizens, and if they will utilize the plan to the full extent.

I'm finding it quite fascinating, if I do say so myself. Currently, I am a student at the Univerisity of Texas in Austin, and I'm a sophomore.

---------------------------

I'm doing this on an iMAC in the comp lab, and for someone who has used PC's all his life, it is quite an experience. I think these iMac's are kinda cool. Alright, I'll stop saying random things now.

welcome to General :P

in the UK we don't generally (haha) do this major/minor business - just one subject... so my degree was a BScEcon in Politics, but before that i was doing one of those in Economics.
however now i'm on a year's leave of absence....

edit: my uni days were kinda shite :(
Bottle? haven't seen you around here in a while... or is that me just not noticing things as usual?

Like PM says, we don't really do major/minor that much. You can, but I'm not doing joint honours, I'm doing a single honours degree in Modern History.

Yeah, I've been off-and-on lately, with emphasis on the "off" part. Classes started up for me about a month back and that eats up a lot of time. I'm also applying for a training grant, and that means typing on my 'puter for like 25 hours a day...after all that, I'm less inclined to come type on NS.

But everybody here is just so much fun that I can't stay away for long!

depends on the level of physics... i used to love (and be good at) the subject until they started putting all this maths in
it was my favourite subject, along with economics, till halfway through a-level when the maths started rearing its ugly head. then i went to uni to do economics and the same damn thing happened there. i hate maths

i was wrong and it was shit :(

economics is the easiest and most common-sense thing in the world without all that BS maths to get in the way. if they'd just used words rather than equations and stupid algebraic models to convey the theories and all that, i'd have been fine...

Yeah, that's what they tell me. Problem is, it simply isn't true, at least not yet. The projects in Bioengineering are just as medically oriented as those in Biomedical Engineering. Maybe, in the future, we will have more projects outside of medicine, but we certainly don't now. And, in truth, the necessary skill set is pretty much exactly the same either way.

Math & CS @ University of Pittsburgh. There's also some bull major called "scientific computing" that I've been informed I already qualify for. As far as I can tell, you get it once you're halfway through your junior year of both those. Apparently, that notice was the first time my advisor'd heard of SC, too.

I, personally, am an Urban Planning major, with an emphasis on Transportation and Mass Motivation Design. My goal is to lead the transportation department, and design highway systems and revamp mass transit.
My Mother just retired from her position as Director of Planning at the Ohio DOT*. Let me warn you not to try this- everyone above her (three levels still in state, then anyone of any authority at Federal Highway) is a political appointee. The current director was fired from his only previous job, a middle-school S.S. Teacher. He's a political hack with no relevant education or experience, and his job (also, all of planning) has almost nothing to do with designing highway- the engineers are required to do all of that, and then they hire a university or a consultant for 10 hours to read over & present their ideas to the director.

What's worse, he's been banking on Taft getting tarred, feathered, & run out of state for the past six years (as with anyone who's had to work with the government)- fully expecting himself to disappear the moment anyone but a stock & file republican's in power. So, he's replacing asphalt with concrete, and starting massive projects due the beginning of the next administration, and giving them about a quarter of the proper funding so it looks like the next guy screwed up immediately.

So, as long as you can take orders, stay the heck out of Government and go into consulting. The only reasons to stay in government are that I can do three people's jobs (without a degree) in the background while surfing the net, and that there's so much paperwork involved in getting fired that you can straight up say "This is your job, I'm not going to do it" to some other Dept's director.

*I worked there one summer in college, & for a group they granted at OSU one summer in HS. I've seen it work, and the only change I was able to make was losing the paperwork for starting a $90 million project to beautify bridges somewhere in Southern Ohio, where they'd set the budget to $5 million.

That's bizarre and appaling... What's with all the political appointees in the US? Sounds like something you'd expect in a feudalism. Why not just treat all jobs like jobs and hire suitable candidates?Because suitable candidates are generally attracted to the higher pay of the private sector. Plus, it's easier for a governor/president/mayor to make sure thy will be done if the person in a job understands that, not only do they have the job because of the man giving the orders, but their job only exists because he created it. Though, the former is usually good enough.

To be more explicit, the job exists because he appointed & hired a comittee specifically to vote on creating that position. Sometimes a governor can create the position out of thin air, because certain states give their governors lots of money/power (I.E., North Carolina). Occasionally, the state legislature votes to create it a new position, since some governors have no power whatsoever (Texas). This rarely happens, since they generally keep a structure that they like, but a position can be created or dropped at any time.

You can tell I'm not fond of Government, can't you?

Currently, however, my biggest worry is that my math teacher's classroom phone is still broken from that one idiotic boy that, thank heavens, was not actually in many of my classes last year, and I therefore can't reach him to ask if I can take half his class by independent study this year.

I was majoring in chemical engineering, but I switched to psychology. Three years and my parents still have not recovered.

Psychology is awfully depressing though, no matter how happy you were before class, you leave feeling down. Whether you are learning how easy it is to sway juries or the psychological abuse used to enable physical abuse, it makes you feel bad about your peers.

Fine Arts-Sculpture (No, I went to a REAL school, not University. Anyone who takes Fine Art @ Univeristy is wasting their time and money.)

Perhaps a class in Patience would help. I do beleive this is the first time I've seen someone manage to make a quadruple post.

I'm currently studying Political Science and Print Journalism, and hope to major in both. I'm thinking of adding an Economics minor to that as well.
