And causing massive damage and flooding in Tokyo and environs. Two have already died.

Oh yeah, I'm going to keep up the reports on Western Pacific typhoons. They will be constant topics until the typhoon season ends in October. They just keep coming and coming and coming.

And there's still people who doubts Global Warming.

What are we looking at damage wise?

From Apple Daily, a local newspaper:

100mm of rain in one hour in Tokyo, causing floods that haven't been seen in decades.

At least 3000 Tokyo homes under water.

At least 7000 Tokyo homes without electricity.

At least 300 domestic flights disrupted.

At least 2 have died.

Floods over one story high.

For now.

Last year, 10 typhoons struck Japan (a record), causing 220 deaths/missings, and billions of dollars of economic loss.

Hopefully the collateral damage won't be as bad as that which high NO and the Gulf cities...

If their last season only causes 220 deaths and billions of dollars in damage, they won't be as bad off as New Orleans and subsequent Gulf areas. But really, these are the people that made an island in the middle of the damn sea to use as an airport, they will be fine.

AFAIK Typhoon #14 (http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/national/news/20050906p2a00m0na022000c.html) (they aren't named here) has yet to hit Tokyo. There have been 6 deaths and 14 are missing.

However, 35 m/second (74 mph) winds doesn't make it anywhere near the cat. 5 that Katrina was. In fact, that makes it a weak cat. 1.

I've been through a few Gulf Coast hurricanes (I grew up in coastal Texas) and several typhoons (14 years in Japan). I have yet to see a typhoon that is anywhere near as powerful and as damaging as a real hurricane.

In fact, I am usually confused by what the local news media reports as being a typhoon. It is my understanding that the threshhold for a typhoon is supposed to be 118 kph winds, but I've seen what should be classified as a tropical depression referred to as a typhoon all to often here. And the deaths attributed to typhoons are largely due to stupidity and are often worthy of Darwin Awards. Some notable examples from last year include windsurfing the storm surge and BBQing on the seawall in Wakayama as the typhoon makes landfall.

Sorry Dragon, but the degrees are lightyears apart.

Jesus Christ, with a population density like Japan's, you can only pray that this typhoon season doesn't cause that much damage.

True... They're also the people who made buildings to withstand the extensive damaging nature of earthquakes.

On paper at least. The Dai-Hanshin earthquake exposed that as BS in 1995 (that'd be the Kobe earthquake for those less familiar).

Even the Shinkansen lines were expossed as having shoddy not up to code workmanship.

In Japan it is often the case that the law says something completely 180 degrees opposite from what is reality. Building codes are given lip service, and not much more. (And that makes even more sense if you know what "lip service" is a euphamism for here...)
