Best NBA player in history
This is the second thread for my set five. The original (a while back) was for baseball (of course, Babe Ruth won; my opinion of the best, Ty Cobb, came in second). This is for basketball. Give your opinions. Poll coming.

i was a bulls fan when i was younger, so this is an easy choice...
Michael Jordan. Nobody could dominate the game at both ends of the court like him.
the stilt, while he did have the worst nickname ever, had the skills and the ladies (rumored in the thousands)

what the hell happened to mentioning Dr. J? Julius Erving takes the cake as my favorite, and the best. Other than that, I;d have to say Shaq Daddy, us Miami fans are glad to have him, and hes an awesome role model. U.S, Marshal, College Graduate, awesome family man, great for kids to look up to, lets just hope he doesnt try baseball...

umm no Patrick Ewing in the poll? I think Patrick Ewing is the best player in the history of basketball .33!

What about like maybe, Reggie Miller, has to be the best player to never win an NBA Championship, or JOhn Stockton? 95% free throw success? thats pretty good.
Patrick Ewing can't even spell his own name ( i dont know that for sure) and his free throw % was in the crapper

I would call it a tie between Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. No one ever dominated the floor like Wilt, and no one was ever as good at playing field general on the hard court than Russell.

I agree with John Stockton but Patrick Ewing was a powerhouse down in the paint with nice hook shots

Michael Jordan (no-brainer) but Dr. J is a great second. Dr. J was famous mostly for his tricks but he did revolutionize the game.

Patrick Ewing was a very good free throw shooter for a center.
Link (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/e/ewingpa01.html) I don't know about the whole spelling his name thing though.

I voted for Jordan. The statistic that really stands out for me is that he led the league in scoring in 6 separate seasons in which he won the championship. Before Jordan, people always use to say that scoring champions never won championships. It's still true, it just didn't apply to Jordan.

Ewing is the best college player in any sport period. He was great in the NBA, but he wasn't a legend.
All you people with your ideas of who should have been on there...So they can make free throws or jumpshots. But where's the heart? Those guys (except Dr. J) were not legends.

Jordan's a legend.
I'd say Jordan, Russell, Chamberlain, and Magic would be tied.

I've got two for consideration, one I never saw play and one I saw live when I was a kid.
Oscar Robertson--averaged a triple double. That's an all-around player.
Pistol Pete Maravich--he was Dr. J before Erving was Dr. J.
