Your immediate attention and response is requested. No animal rescue groups have been allowed into New Orleans to help animals, who have been left stranded on their own. Sending money is not solving the animals’ problem, which is worsening by the hour.

Meanwhile, federal authorities are forcing everyone—including elderly residents who have stayed in water-logged residences for five days just to safeguard their beloved animals—to leave their animals behind to starve. In some cases, people are told that they must choose between bringing vital medicine and bringing their dog when they are evacuated. This is illegal and it must stop.

PETA has issued a media advisory stating that we will prosecute any known violators, but that is not stopping federal evacuators from insisting that animals be left to die. Today, Rue McClanahan wrote to President George W. Bush, calling on him to order officials to allow people to evacuate with their animals.

Please, immediately call your member of Congress today to ask that people be allowed to evacuate with their animals. Leave messages for them in Washington and at their home offices and get everyone you know to call. The names of—and contact information for—your representative and senators can be found online. Please forward this alert to others willing to lend their voices to help with this emergency.

Why should someones pets take a seat in the evacuations that might be taken up by a human?

Personally, as a long-time carnivore, I think PETA should be banned from the face of the Earth. I mean, I like animals and think they should be treated nicely, but PETA is a disgrace.

And, of course, humans are much more important. I am not going to leave me ederly grandfather behind in order to save a rat when something bad happens

also they don't realize that most of the animals are already gone, fled before the hurricane struck. all that's left are the pets of those trapped as well as those abandoned by their "loving" owners.

I love animals, and I am a big cat lover. But this is just retarded.

I have two dogs that I love, but they are giving up their seat for my children.

While I agree that people are more important, I don't think animals, especially seeing-eye dogs, should be completely ignored. I mean, it's not like they should be treated like rocks or pieces of wood.

You know, I like animals. I never abuse my dogs, train them right. I have 5 goldfish that are almost two years old, (I Think), and I have two guinea pigs. But the crap that PETA puts out is ridiculous.

Dogs can swim very well anyway.

I certainly don't care for arguements for vegetarianism. If I want a cheeseburger I'm going to have one! I do think that jerks who like to abuse their pets should be jailed however. If for only because people who like to abuse animals could easily go to humans.

i think people who commit animal cruelty should be castrated with rusty hooks..regardless of wether it may lead to human cruelty

Did all of you who've responded read the letter? I'm not sure it's saying what you seem to think it is. It seems simply to be arguing that rescue workers should not be ordering people to leave their pets behind to starve - not that pets should be saved before people or anything like that. Saying that people should not be required to abandon their pets seems to be a reasonable statement. Whether or not it's feasible to rescue most pets is another question (to which I don't happen to know the answer), but to argue that we ought to at least be trying to do so is hardly idiotic or crazy, even if you disagree. No one is suggesting that people should leave Grandpa behind in order to bring Fido. Sheesh.

Well abusing pets is one thing, but killing animals for food is another. Nobody compained about killing animals for food for thousands of years, as almost all species of animals kill other types of animals for food, but then some group of idiots called PETA came, and...

Well abusing pets is one thing, but killing animals for food is another. Nobody compained about killing animals for food for thousands of years, as almost all species of animals kill other types of animals for food, but then some group of idiots called PETA came, and...

Perhaps PETA thinks we don't need to eat meat anymore. Perhaps we are supposed to get the nutrients in meat somewhere else?
