Can't help but feel sorry for this guy:

Officer jailed for Guyana killing

A British police officer convicted of killing a petty criminal he shot in Guyana 23 years ago has been jailed for two years at the Old Bailey.
...
He shot Brian Spencer as he ran off after robbing wife Sandra and attempting to sexually assault her sister.

Surrey-born Cheong was convicted last month, after his wife turned him in.

Jurors heard Mrs Cheong rang police after their marriage ended in "bitterness and antagonism" in 2003.

He now faces dismissal from the police force.

He kills a guy to save his wife and sister and then has the cow turn him in 2 decades later 'cause they split up.
So now he's got no marriage, a prison sentence and dismissal from the police. Way to go to totally destroy someone's life.
What an absolute nasty Beeeeitch.

Well...that's what we in the business call "bullshit".

Is there any possibility that he'll be released?

While I agree that the wife is a spiteful bitch and the sentence is unfair I think your summary is somewhat innaccurate. It says he shot the man 'as he ran off after the crime', this means it would be viewed as a revenge killing rather than defence.
