So I'm just looking for a specific British soldier of 1914...

And I keep getting dead links or to a website that refuses to hand out information or records to non-relatives.

Dad apparently was at India and went to an antique shop and found this compass thingie. On the casing it gives a name, London, and 1914.

Just looking for the sake of curiosity and wondering if this actually belonged to a man at one point.

Anyone know of a place which lists the names of soldiers or sailors of the British armed forces during this time period? I assume this man may have participated in WW1.

Over here, we have a war memorial that keeps records of all soldiers that served (and it is available to the public, you can go in and browse the books). You might try contacting the British one.

You'd think the Ministry of Defence would keep records of that kind of thing.

If you know the regiment he served with they could help you out. (If they still exist). Or the MOD if you write to them, I believe they will release records of servicemen that have been dead for a certain period of time.

I lost my compass thingy back in the Punjab around 1915. Could you send it back to me? Thanks.

Hmm, I might have found a site that tells me the names of victims. I'm searching that.

Well maybe you should look in the British National Archives
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/
as far as I know, it has lists of all those who served in the British Armed Forces in both wars. Good Luck.

They do, unfortunately many of these records were destroyed in the Blitz.

Oh dear.

Quick search on the guy's name and I find this on ebay. Nearly 100% identical to the object I have.

Minus the MK1.

You should probably look in the (British) Indian Army records. It will be difficult, my Grandfather was seconded from a Yorkshire Infantry Regiment to a Buluchistani Infantry Regiment in what is now Pakistan in the period just before the second World War, and there is no record on the web of the division, let alone the regiment. Also remember in 1914 the British Army was actually the British Imperial Army and consisted of Regiments made up from settlers and colonised peoples of the entire Empire, often - once the war was underway - in mixed formations and The Indian Army as well as the British Army, all run seperately until conflict in Europe forced them to be more centrally administrated.

That is the makers name, "esq" (esquire) was often used instead of "& co." when the business was owned by one person.
