Is your house haunted ?
I was just wondering, is anyones house haunted/really spooky ?
When I used to live in Kansas City, Missouri from time to time you could see this glowing white figure in the basement. It was one of those old places built in the 1800's when the land was used for farming. I thought I was crazy when I saw it myself but when my mother mentioned it to me I freaked out. It wasn't a threatening thing because I was 7 at the time and it actually was comforting when it appeared. You got this sense of being content whenever it manifested. I heard this story of this girl who was murdered by her father way back when the house was on farmland, and I think it's her.
At my current house, when home alone i often hear footsteps upstairs and what sounds like someone whispering, its quite freaky, just wondering anyone elses houses have weird stuff; and i swear one night i saw a little girl in a dress, while on NS.

Yup mine is. Though I'm lucky it's one of my great grandparents and not some spector that loves to toy with us (though everything loves to go missing with the exception of my stuff). The fact that this house was once my great grandparents is probably the reason that it's haunted.

If I saw a little girl at my place while I'm home alone, it would be time to move out.

Forgot one thing, a few nights ago i was watching tv, i turned off the digital cable and the tv, whent upstairs, then after going the bathroom i heard something downstairs. Whent down to see what it was, and the digital cable and the Tv were back on, that scared the shit outta me.
Yeah, my house is haunted.

sorry about the earlier post I got distracted.
The house I grew up in seemed haunted to me. Pictures falling off the walls, voices in the night, strange dreams, cold spots, and general spooky stuff, but I think I just attributed it to a haunting because I knew that a guy had died in my bedroom before we moved in.

That has to suck. Another thing, when i was 4-5, we lived in a small house built in the 1950's. I distinctly remember waking up one night to see a woman standing at the foot of the bed. I dont remember anything else( i was 5, you can understand)

At the moment, I don't live in a house. I live in the Scott Hall dormitory at Ripon College. Supposedly, the third floor of Bovay is reputedly haunted by a student who killed himself. Additionally, there is a story about a demonic summoning that went awry once in one of the dormitories, though I'm not sure which one. As for my actual house, it's rather new, so unless it was built on top of an Indian burial ground or something (which would have haunted the field that was in place prior to our house) I doubt it's haunted.

i once lived in a house that was haunted. I heard footsteps and stuff, then one night my closet door swung open and the lights turned on, but no one was there. After about 3 years my parents had an exorcist come and i never heard the footsteps after that.

Yeah what sucked even more was there was a bad storm that broke a window in my room and ruined the carpet, when we pulled it up there was a big blood stain in the wood under the new carpet they had put in before we bought the house. I saw that and got creeped out and slept in the living room from the age of 9 to 16 when I moved out on my own.

nope, not personally but my dad did have to dig around under the house to fix a plumbing problem once and didn't mention any dead bodies. Also I know that the guy who died in my room was found and buried. In case anyone was wondering he shot himself in the head. I had expected to find the blood stain but what had creeped me out was it was under where my bed was, I had been sleeping where he died. okay I have to stop talking about it now, I have to go to bed, gotta help hurricane victims tomorrow.

Yes, my house is pretty much haunted. There's some kind of presence here (I don't know if it's a ghost, or just a place where there was alot of strong emotion, but there's definitely something here) that we refer to as "Mom". It seems to be benevolent, and strangely protective. Little things happen when there's someone unwelcome in the house -- screensavers will turn off when nothing has touched the laptop, or things dangling from the ceiling will start to sway, then abruptly change directions. The ceiling fan has even stopped on its own, changed directions, and then shut off entirely. I'd blame faulty wiring, but we had the house inspected before we moved in last year, and everything seemed fine.
The main room that the presence seems to inhabit always has an odd, empty feel to it -- even when it was fully furnished and used as a bedroom.

I don't think it's hunted, but for the last year I've woek up screaming and sweating and babbleing almost biweekly. I never remember it, but my mom had told me. Scares the shit out of her. One time, I had a really realistic dream, I swear it was just like being awake. This ghostly form came in through the wall, hovered about a foot above me, and stared me directly in the eyes. I felt like it was draining something from me, like he had invisible tenticles wrapped around me. I tryed to scream, I tryed to run, I couldn't move. It was like I was wrapped in some substance that I couldn't move through. Somehow, I managed to get up and run, but I could barly inch forward. It was like running while underwater, with a giant rubber band trying to snap you back. I was running on pure terror, forceing myself forward with everything I had. I still couldn't make any sounds. And the whole time, I though it was real, that I was awake. I could feel the floor on my feet, the shirt on my body, the fucking air on my cheek. After I made it to the hallway, I blacked out.

Believe it or not, the cats are kind of drawn toward the closet in that room. It looks like there's some kind of marking in the back of the closet, but we've kind of chalked that up to scratches from shoddy repairs and shit. Still, the cat randomly stops while wandering around, and stares at things nobody else sees --- that may be normal cat behavior,though...I've always been told that cats are kind of weird.

It doesn't really make anyone here uncomfortable. My friend Rose sleeps in the room, and she hasn't had any problems -- Mom seems to know better than to mess with her. (It's never a good idea to fuck with Rose -- even if you're already dead, lol )
Anyway, Mom stays pretty quiet most of the time. When someone's having an especially bad day, she'll put a hand on their shoulder or back -- she's a thoroughly comforting presence.

That's a phenomenon known as Sleep Paralysis. Researchers have been able to induce it by suddenly waking people up at a crucial stage in REM sleep. Apparently the brain wakes abruptly while still in dream mode, becomes aware of the fact that it cannot send signals to the body, and panicks. The body is naturally paralyzed during sleep to keep the dreamer from acting their dreams out, but sometimes the transition back to consciousness isn't smooth.
There's a Science article on it here (http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20050709/bob9.asp) (beware, slightly creepy)

Currently, no (although I don't know for sure, I think Japanese ghosts are scared of gaijin). But when I was growing up the house we were in did have a few strange ghostly visitors.
One I know was the ghost of my father, just checking in. And for the longest time after one of our dogs had died, you could feel her still walking behind you, even hear her toenails click.
The last one I'm SURE was just my over active imagination, brought on by reading the Hound of the Baskervilles alone, at night, in the middle of a storm, with only one light on in the house. After all, no one ELSE has seen a headless woman in a wedding dress walking around.
So I'm pretty sure it's just me.

I tried to speak but couldn't, but the freakiest part was that I sensed that something "hostile" was right beside me (I woke up lying on my right side) and that if I turned around when I was able to that I'd be in for the surprise of my life!! Not a cool feeling. But after it was over I just went back to sleep like nothing happened.

Thats actually a fairly common occurence.
Its called Sleep Paralysis. (I probably spelled that wrong, thus. making me look like a dolt)

Its basically the same as a "Lucid Dream" where you are in a state of partial wakeness, and sleep.

While I personally would appreciate every scientific explanation, I had one or two similar experiences that don't seem to quite fit that phenomenon.
At the time, I was living in an old house. Now, while most of the houses I lived in so far were at least 100 years old, if not older, that one was by far the oldest one, dating from the 14th century (most likley built some time around 1350).
The experience I had there was that the place was constantly cold. I'm not a person to feel cold to quickly, and I put it down to the thick sandstone walls and drafty windows at first. Other than that, there was nothing unusual about the place at first.
Only after I had been there for about 4-5 months, I found myself half waking up in the middle of the night, bathed in cold sweat and not able to move at all. My impulse was to switch on my bedside lamp, but I couldn't move my hand. As the place was pitch dark at night, I couldn't even tell if my eyes were open or not. I do remember that everything was eerily quiet, there was no sound at all which in a house that age is rather unusual. I managed to snap out of it after 2-3 minutes that seemed like eternity, and slept the rest of the night with the lights on.
Now, so far that would fit the description. What somehow doesn't fit is that I never had experiences like that before, and never again, but while I lived in that house, they were a regular occurence.

The only warm place was the bathroom, all other rooms were cold, despite continuous heating.

Well, In this case, It seems that you may have just been sleeping in an old drafty home.
Generally, most paranormal events associated with cold, usually only happen in spots.
As for your sleeping patterns, vivid dreams are a standard "symptom" of people who tend to experience sleep paralysis.
Its kind of like dreaming, and waking up, and still be dreaming.
The idea behind this kind of thing, is to assume a normal, perfectly explainable rationale, before assuming the paranormal.
Where you having an unusual amount of stress, suring that time?

I lived there for 1.5 years. In the first 3-4 months, nothing happened, after that it happened 5 or 6 times, I didn't count them, really. There was no specific pattern as to when it would happen. I actually used to think of it as very extreme nightmares until I talked about it to a friend. That made me realise how out of the ordinary it was for me, as I never in my life had the same dream twice. Also, it made me realise that it had only happened there.

Im thinking that you experienced sleep paralysis.
The reason I think this is that you havent mentioned anything of the supernatural type, other than these experiences.
They arent nightmares, as your mind is slowly waking from the dream, or rather, the body stays asleep, even though the mind is awake.
However, I should make the mention about "pyschic vampires".
Some people believe that these occurences are entities, who feed off energies, and render thier victims in such a paralytic state.
Often these are accompanied by a sense of "evil" or "a presence".
I chalk that up to superstition, and over-active imaginations.
However, especially when it comes to things that go bump in the night, I dont think there are any experts.
(Warning, Long post ahead)
Not my house, but the place I work.
There are a few different storage rooms where we keep the files, with one main room to get into them all. Everytime I was in the main room the doors leading to the other rooms would rattle like someone was tring to open them. The rooms were even scarier.
The porblem with the rooms is that when the place was built they weren't wierd with lights, but somewhere along the line the maintainance crew nailed 2X4s to the cieling and put light sockets into them. But because of this there are no lightswitched in the rooms. Instead, you have to open the door, put out the cord attached to the lights and plug it ino a socket in the main room. One day I went into room 1 and the powercord for the lights was cut. I didn't think much of it, instead I just went and got a lamp from another part of the building. I pluged that in in the room and wokred in their for a while. After a while I went to lunch, and when I came back the lamp was unpluged, and the lights in the room were on. The powercord was pluged in, and when I checked it out it wasn't cut anmore, not a sratch on it.
After I'm done in the rooms I lock them, but everytime I go to the main room, room 4 is always unlocked. It makes me angry because everytime I walk past it I have to lock it again, and I used to accuse my co-workers of forgeting to lock it. So once at the end of the day before I left I put a pin in the keyhole so no one could put a key into unless they pulled the pin out. The next day when I came in and went down their the lock had been ripped right out of the door and was laying on the floor.
The worst of all was room 8. I don't have to go into that one very often, because their aren't very many things stored in it. A long while back the people who I work with noticed that things stored in that room seem to go missing, Anyway, one day I had to go in there, but I couldn't get in. The door was unlocked and everything, but it wouldn't budge. I had to get three guys to help me. We pushed as hard as we could for about ten minutes until finaly, without notice, it suddenly burst open. None of us could figure out why it was stuck, the hindges were fine, there was nothing blokcing it's path, we were very puzzled. So eventualy we just decided to go on working. I quickly noticed that there were no lights in this room, so I had to go get a lamp like what I did with room 1. The whole time I was in room 8 I felt a wierd presence, as if someone was watching me, and was very angry. When I was finaly done in the room I turned to walk out, and it felt like someone was pushing me toward the door. When I got out I tried to close the door but once again it was stuck, I pulled as hard as I could but it wouldn't close. By this time the fear had consumed me, so I ran out of the room into the main office. After a little while I went back into the main room, and found that room 8's door was closed and locked, and the lamp I had left in there was now sitting in the hallway outside the door. Finaly, and most freightening, was went I was talking to Terry (the maintainance guy). I told him about how scary that room was, and he said I was lucky he had personally installed the lights in that room.
I consider myself lucky that I don't work down there anymore.

Something similiar happened to a friend of mine. He woke up at night and saw a small man sitting at his chest. This small man was that heavy that my friend wasn't able to move and was hardly able to breath. What's most strange is that this describes a folkloristic entity known as the "Alb". It is commonly explained as Sleep Paralysis.

thank you for posting the article. My 4 year old used to have night terrors but recently has been complaining of waking up and not being able to move. Her dr said that she was probibly fine, but that did little to calm her fears, now I can tell her about this phenomenon and she will not be so terrified. :D

Well, I can put in one more story to this thread:
That didn't happen to me, but to my mother. She's a nurse and was working in retirement homes. One of these homes in my home town is located in an old convent buliding, dating from the late Middle Ages. The building has two wings, which are connected by the church building. To get from one wing to the other, the quickest way is across the gallery of the church. The church itself is still being used as such, but the convent has been gone for almost a century.
My mother had to do night shifts as well, of course, and she reported that whenever she was passing through the church, she would see an apparently old nun in an out-of-date habit kneeling in prayer in the dimly lit nave.
She didn't think much of it at first, having grown up as we all were in a deeply catholic town with numerous convents, where praying nuns are no rare sight. Only when talking about it to a colleague she realised that no nun could have come into the church that was locked at nighttime, and that there was no convent close to that church any more anyway.
She wasn't the only one seeing that old nun, either. Almost all of her colleagues reported seeing her from time to time...

Why only when you're home alone? Is the ghost shy or something? Maybe those sounds are always there but you only notice them when you're alone and listening for spooky sounds.
No, not really , the time i saw a little girl my parents were out of town with my sister, and my brother was asleep in his room. I have head footsteps everywere, i will go in the basment and hear them walk across the kitchen, then i check the main floor and they start upstairs, then i go and check and it stops.

Bush haunts the white house with his stupidity.
Hear hear! :)
And yes, my house is haunted too.
When i'm home alone I can feel someone watching me if i'm in the livingroom.
And sometimes I can see a fading white shade cross the room from one corner to another!
The other day I got really freaked out. I was home alone and listing to music on my computer. It was around 8:30 so it had already gotten pretty dark out. Then all of the sudden I heard a noise like someone walking around upstairs. At first I had though someone broke in, because the music was loud enough that if they had opened the back door, I wouldn't have heard it. So I grabbed a baseball bat and went upstairs. When I got there, the noises had stopped, but the two shirts I had laying on my floor had been folded up and put on my bed. Also, every door had been almost entirly closed, but was just a crack open. So after I had opened them all and check them, I went back downstairs. When I got their, my computer was playing a song I never even donloaded, and my AIM had been closed. Thats scared the hell outta me and I went outside and skateboarded til my family got back home.
Wait, I got another, but this was about my dad's cousins house. See, his is a priest, so he has to live in one of those buildings with like 4 or 5 other priest. Anyway, he used to live in one of those house in Cleavland. And the one night after dinner he was going into his room into the top floor. As he was closing the door, he saw a preist coming out of his room. Since the house was so old, and they were on the third floor, their was this copper wiring exposed, running up and down a few little spots on the wall. All of the sudden my dad's cousin heard a large thud, and ran to open the door. The priest that had been coming out of his room slipped, and fell back into the wiring and had been electricuted. My dad's cousin saw he was dieing, and called for help. But by the time the ambulances had arrive, the priest was already passing away, and died before they could move him to the ambulance. But after he was dead, strange things would begin to happen. Like when someone was home alone, their would be footsteps from the floor above. Or, whenever the one secratary in the house locked up her office for the night, the next day papers would have been moved, and pens would have their caps taken off and chairs would be tipped over.
But I never got to see the house, because my dad's cousin moved a year or so after the other priest's death to a new house.
Edit: oh, I forgot like half the story. See, one day a bathroom on the third floor of the hosue had been having problems, and so they called a plumber to fix it. One of the priest's lead the plumber up to the third floor, and then went back down stairs. While the plumber was worker, a priest came into the room to watch. The plumber turnned to look at him and said hi, but the priest just watched him work and said nothing. So then he kept working, and when he had finished he turnned around, but the priest wasn't their. So he went back downstairs. When he got there, he asked the priest who had lead him up their who the priest was one the third floor. The priest laughed and said noone else was home, so he couldn't have seen anyone. Then the plumber explained what happened. The priest suddenly grabbed a book filled with pictures of the priests that had lived in the house, and pointed to one ad said was that him? The plumber said yeah, and then the priest explained the priest the plumber saw had died 3 months ago.
there is a theory that some people are actually more sensitive to emf and can feel emf that others can't which can manafest itself as hearing voices or footsteps and stuff. you may be one of those people.
or they just have schiztophrenia :p
I have never lived in a haunted house. I don't know why people scream and run away from me whenever they see me. And why do my fingers keep passing through the keyboard?!
That would scare the shit out of me.
That should be on the house listing:
3 bedrooms
2 baths
Some dude killed himself upstairs.
I always hear footsteps ang banging on the walls (loud, wake you up out out of a deep sleep loud) plus we get the added benefits of people whispering in german and latin in really hoarse voices like one time I just came home from school and decided to take a nap and I heard really loud talking in the bathroom in my room and they kept saying nazarene and feriluce which scared the crap out of me
feriluce= Fruleach ? that means spring.

I think my room might be.
Everyone else went to sleep LONG before I did in summer. They liked to be up during the day.
At like two in the morning I heard a knocking on my door. I didn't think much of it, it sounded like my dad's knock, but no one came in or said anything. They just knocked and walked away.
I locked the door and didn't go out until my dad woke up, since I could have sworn I heard things moving out in the living room.
My dad said he didn't do it, so that's kind of creepy.
Then, I was reading a book one night. It was two again, I think... not sure of the time on this one. I got up to go to the bathroom and discovered the door had been LOCKED.
Now, my door can only lock from the inside if you don't have a key. My dad has the key, and probably lost it by now. Everyone else was asleep. *I* didn't lock the door, because I never do anymore.
So I want to know who wanted to keep me in my room. bah.

I don't hallucinate easily, unlike most people. Without a "seed input", I can't see figures, feel strange presences or hear nonexistent sounds.
But, with a "seed input", it's possible for everyone. In one room of a school building there is an air conditioning outlet. It's not installed very well, and it gives a howling or screaming sound. The frequency range is just perfect for imitating human voices. It's uncomfortable to be there alone, because after ten minutes, you'll start hearing the desperate screams of terror of a woman.
Another interesting input is when someone else is sleeping in the same room.

No, but I go regularly to a haunted resturant. It was converted from an old mansion where a senator used to live before the Civil War. I've never seen him myself, but he made his presence known. He kept knocking down every glass of water he could find. He seemed to know, too, that anything other than water would stain. I guess he was a real big prankster.
Edit: I guess my house is haunted, despite being only fifteen years old. My dad died around ten years ago in a doorway. Occaisonally, we here doors slamming when no one enters or leaves the house.

One more thing i just remembered. 2 years ago, i was in my room, playing Ps2, when my door flew open, at 2 AM, it was locked, and the only way that could have happen is if you opened it from the inside and pushed it from the outside, and i ran to see who was there, but everyone was asleep. Was quite scary.
