You need not specify the dollar ammount, but to what organizations do you give money? I think it says a bit about a person.

Not being tremendously wealthy, ive not been able to bequeath fortunes, but I give to:

The ACLU
Wikipedia
The Phoenix Symphony
The Red Cross
Americans United for the Separation of Church and State
The James Randi Educational Fund
Several local museum.
Bums
NARAL Pro-Choice America

I donated money to the Tsunami relief fund earlier this year, and I've donated to the American Red Cross' relief fund for Hurricane Katrina.

I was on vacation in London when the tsunami struck and for two weesk afterwards, but i donated GBP to the effort while I was there.

ON an interesting aside, I left the morning it struck and assumed for a couple days, as I was out of the news-loop, that it was as minor as it was first reported. Seeing, in passing, a newspaper headline declaring hundreds of thousands had died was one of the most shocking instances in my life, and very memorable.

It really struck me how focused the country became, immediately, on everyone pitching in with money.

I give to my church and to the baptist disaster relief fund (100% of donations go to disaster relief) I have donated money to habitat for humanity, and to the Red Cross, but most goes to my church.

I don't give, cheifly because I don't have the money to do so. Every two months the University vacuum comes along and sucks up my thousand-plus dollars that I've earned, and I cry, cry, cry.

I don't give to any specific charities, but I always give a few dollars to collectors I see in town.

I've collected for the Save the Children annual appeal 3 times and forth time after the Tsunami.

Forsooth, I would never have noticed.....

In all seriousness, though, I donate to the red cross or SA if I donate at all, I feel considerably more comfortable in the knowledge that my money will be used for beneficient causes.

The Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, the Salvation Army, and Planned Parenthood.

I make my donations directly, and do not under any circumstances funnel a dime through "The United Way"-I want my contributions to be used, not handed out to Administrators and Middlemen.

I'm a college student, so I have got jack-shit for money. I do donate blood to the Red Cross regularly though. I figure that's better, since money can't buy blood.

Regularly only to Unicef and Amnesty. Other organisations may get the coins in my pockets if I think it's for a good cause.

Donating regularly is much more efficient than donating only when the collectors fill the streets. So if you can donate a small amount every month, please do so instead of giving only to collectors.

I also volunteer on an irregular basis, usually for the American Cancer Society.

I'm pretty sure English animals won't need your money. As far as I know RSPCA is loaded compared to many other organisation.

yeah, in England people tend to like animals more than people, i have a friend whose parents appear to love her rabbit more than her, they even took a picture of her down from the wall and replaced it with one of her rabbit and guinea pigs

And if she does too, then......well it's still no excuse. Parents should love their kids more than some rabbit.

"To Whom do You Give?"

Not having been able to pay all of my bills until recently, I haven't been able to give to anything for quite awhile. However, now that my finances have turned around, I will be giving on a regular basis to:

* Army Emergency Relief - They help active duty Army and veterans who need financial assistance, with no-interest and low-interest loans and even grants.

* The Salvation Army - Their disaster and humanitarian relief efforts are legendary and I have never heard of a scandal involving the SA.

* Panhandlers - I always give what I can to those poor souls I run into who are down on their luck, especially the homeless ones. I figure, "There but for the Grace of God, go I."

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my Christmas cards are usually bought from Amnesty International (ai) and UNICEF.

While we're on the topic, someone mentioned that the United Way fritters away a lot of its donations on management and administrators. Any other major organisations that people should stay away from for these reasons?

No specific charities, I just like browsing through charity shops for bargains. I find the best charity shops are British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Oxfam. I also do regular volunteer work in my local Oxfam shop - normally around 12 hours a week. As well as buying records from there with money I really should save...And I give to the RAG society (Raise And Give) at my university, but I'm not sure which charities they give to.
I specifically don't give money to the British Legion (that includes buying poppies for Remembrance Sunday). It's a badly run organisation, and not enough of the money they raise goes towards the people who need it.
