from a purely tactical point of view, i like the timing. roberts was supposed to be the stealth candidate that flew under the radar, and when rhenquist passed away they'd bring out the radical because the left had exhausted their ammunition on roberts. now they can either nominate the crazy and give the left 2 candidates to choose from, or another moderate conservative. which, considering the president and senate in question, is all we could reasonable hope for.
from a more human point of view, that's a shame. i agreed with almost nothing rhenquist said or did, but he seemed honestly willing to admit that other people had points they wanted to make too, which i always admire in politics...

A liberal, as defined in modern terms, would expand some civil rights--emphasis on some--while totally obliterating economic freedom. We need a libertarian who champions economic, social, and political liberty, but that's never going to happen. People think libertarians are cuh-razy.
Well, at least Roberts doesn't seem too bad... Maybe there's just no dirt on him because he hasn't had time to pick it up, though. No one really knows.

1. BOTH SIDES of the aisle was responsible for the levee budget getting cut. Not just Bush! Remember that Gauthier!
2. Under operational proceedures, only 50% of the guard from any one state would be deployed just incase of a disaster. Just over 30% of LA's guard were in Iraq leaving around 70% to be in the state.

I'm actually glad the vacancies occured during Bush's administration. Liberal justices for too long have been engaging in unconstitutional judical advocacy and have erroded away state's rights.
Rehnquist was my favorite justice, so it saddens me that he's gone. I only hope Bush appoints someone similar. Rehnquist was much more resonable then other conservatives in the court. Plus if you read any of his writings you can see that, at least in my opinion, he's one of the more intelligent justices we have had. I just pray Bush doesn't appoint a conservative judicial advocate and instead picks a strict constitutionalist that will uphold state's rights among other things.
