If the U.S. has learned one thing, I hope it is this. THE GOVERNMENT SUCKS AT DISASTERS! We sat there and watched them run around like chickens with their heads cut off. When did it get better? When the military stepped in and said "get the hell outta my way". The mayor of New Orleans said " I have to give George Bush credit for one thing. ""Now, I will tell you this -- and I give the president some credit on this -- he sent one John Wayne dude down here that can get some stuff done, and his name is [Lt.] Gen. [Russel] Honore. Instantanious results! Fuckin right! God bless the military!

~edit~ I know its really weird that an Agnostic always says "god bless", but I figure if people want to beleive in god, then thats what they believe, and I think thats just fine. Just don't ask me to get up Sunday morning, k? ;)

The United States doesn't have a unitary system like many European states. We're federal and federal governments defer to state and local governments on matters like natural disasters until notified otherwise. The federal government is huge and hard to assemble and coordinate. It presumes that the state and local governments are going to first respond to the situation and call on the federal government if and when needed. That didn't happen, though, because Louisiana was freakin' unprepared and disorganized. I don't blame the federal government, but I do blame Louisiana for its total lack of preparation for such an event.

But I do agree with you about one thing: if a natural disaster ever hits my state, I know I can't count on anybody to come save me. :)
