I want this to depart a bit from from the typical threads about where people live. You see, there are just so many bad places right now. No one would currently want to be in New Orleans, or Baghdad, or Mogadishu. I want all of us NSers to gush with pride about where people live, and to feel glad that they call it home.
I live in Rochester, NY, and as far as I'm concerned, it's the best place to live. It is a charming little city that has its failings (high crime rate and drug hub), but I can't see a reason why not to like it. It is a great cultural center, complete with a music industry centered around the Eastman School of Music, and a surprisingly good art museum for a town of our size. All are centered around the prestigious University of Rochester, but that isn't the only attractions. I find it a charming rust belt city, where abandoned factories are slowly converted into clubs, resturants, offices, and apartments. In fact, it wouldn't even be a rust belt city if our local giant, Kodak, got back on its feet.
As for the suburbs, where I live, they are just charming. They are your usual subdivisions and what not, but each suburb is centered around a village that is quite vibrant. Many have the Erie Canal running through them, a great piece of history.
And of course, what description of Upstate NY would be complete without the weather! It is amazing, with all four seasons in one week! The winters are the best, and while Upstaters can call me crazy, I love the piles of snow. Maybe that's because I'm a January baby. Oh well.
Anyhow, doesn't that sound nice? I like where I live, and thouroughly enjoyed writing this. Try to feel as good about where you live.
