Okay, so we have the religious nuts saying everyone who plays doom is satanic and has a pentagram on their porch. And we have the gamers just trying to have some fun, the video game way.

Now, I would please like to see other's opinions on the matter of doom.

Poll to come.

If the "religious nuts" are indeed incoherent, irrational and their opinions accordingly an irrelevancy, why do you propose to debate the issue?

Doom's awesome, but it's also nearly fifteen years old. Why are you bringing this up now?

Yeah, Doom is pretty tame compared to some of the other games out there, like the Grand Theft Auto series.

I've never heard anyone, religious nut or otherwise, say doom has anything to do with satanism.

Same here. I've heard people who say it encouraged the Columbine shootings (apparently one of them shouted "It's going to be just like Doom!") but I've never heard objections on religous grounds. I thought it involved fighting against demons anyway?

I've got one Doom book and the Collector's CD version of all games (lost my originals somewhere). I don't see the difference between playing Doom and playing say, FarCry.

Uh, aren't you FIGHTING the evil legions of Lucifer in Doom? Isn't FIGHTING THE DEVIL a good thing?

Yeah, I seem to remember that bit of the game as well...

Exactly, you're not consorting with daemons, you're blowing their brains out with a double-barelled shotgun.

Though you have to agree, a game based on the apocalypse where you can elect to be a minion of Satan would be awesome fun. hehehe.

Aha! That must be it then. You're not allowed to have fun.

This is what I don't get. I mean, you're fighting against the spawn of Hell, yet somehow you're into Satanic arts becuase of that?

I guess I'm a die-hard goose-steppin' Nazi then, considering the amount of time I've been playing Medal of Honor and Call of Duty. Sieg Hiel! Deutschland über alles! Die Untermensch sind dumm!

Uhh, there haven’t actually BEEN any religious nuts condemning Doom I-III... In case you haven't noticed, it's the Democrats trying to win faux family value points by tearing into video games and restricting people's rights. Apparently they severally fucked their demographic information up, most gamers are adults.

Besides that, the game is based on blowing the spawn of Satan BACK to hell which pretty much axes you're whole point.

You sure they aren't complaining about the movie not the game, and how shitty that thing is going to be?

The Doom series is one of the best games of its time, and even now still holds a special place in many collections. I had all the Doom games on a playstation CD, but allowed a work friend to borrow it then changed jobs without getting it back. I find Doom is much better on the playstation than the computer, alas, the newest Doom isn't being made for the playstation. :(

This kind of controversy makes me wonder if they even look at the media they're denouncing... how does kicking ass through Hell killing demons constitute demon worship in any way? It boggles the mind.

I had the Custom Playstation Edition of Doom I and II. Good stuff.

What about Wolfenstein? I played all of those games, and they kicked ass.

Not only was it revolutionary in it's time, it also taught good "Christian" values.

The value being the best way to eliminate a demon is a 12 gauge 00-buck.

Me: Oh, I'm sorry Mr. Demon did you have something to say?

*click click* BOOM!

Me: Yeah, I didn't think so!

Actually, Marilyn Manson was the reason that the Columbine shootings occurred :D It could never just have been two unhinged kids could it now?

Which crossroads exactly? I'd love to join in. Especially after reading some of the utter fundie lunacy in the 'California Gay Marriage' thread.

Nothing would please me better than to eat those psychos alive while I rape them with a barbwired cowpoke.
