Yeah, I turned on my computer one day and got "Primary HD disk not found"

I was like..."Crap...Nooooooooooooo!"

And I can't even start rebuilding it really because I still haven't gotten a new drive and I'm using this crappy computer for now.

At least I still have my cd's though :)

Yeah I saw Everygrey lived and loved em, then I got some of the songs on their site and they didn't seem so great, then I got Recreation Day and I loved that.

And Satyricon, I particularly like the random Dark Medeval Times stuff with the flutes and stuff along with the black metal, heh.

Yeah its too bad about David Wayne, his era stuff is my favorite Metal Church although The Weight Of The World is actually a really good album

The only Metal Church album I have is their self titled and damn is that a good thrash album. I was gonna get Masterpeace, but some bastard outbid me on ebay. (How is Masterpeace by the way, dya know?)

Speaking of thrash. I have only two words... Mekong Delta. It seems to me they are definately one of the best thrash metal bands ever. Their self-titled album is pure genius, rivaling even the thrash masterpieces Kill Em All and The Legacy.

I like one song by one of those bands, "Turbo Lover" by Judas Preist.

To me, 95% is generally way over the top guitar work and singing, or horrid screaming with no melody to speak of. I can't even tell the difference between two death metal songs.

I like...

Megadeth
Slayer
Iced Earth
Nile

Most of them I don't know. I'm not a huge metal person.

And...

napalm death
tenacious D (they're fucking metal! :D)
biohazard
fear factory

Tenacious D metal? hehehe.

Black Sabbath

Hell yes. \m/

Alice In Chains
Deftones
Korn
(some) In Flames
Metallica
Pantera
Sepultura
SOAD

Only the first two Korn albums...and I don't care for anything post-Black album by Metallica much. In Flames also get on my nerves after a while.

Add Kyuss, Monster Magnet, the Melvins, Tool and Machine Head (not their rap-metal stuff, ugh) to my list.

To further add my most revered opinion of bands mentioned here...

Black Sabbath -- \m/
Cacophony -- hell yeah
Alice In Chains -- a bit grungy for my tastes but still ok
Bolt Thrower -- great
Morbid Angel -- dont like
Exodus -- ought to get around to listenin to them...
Heathen -- dunno
Deftones -- bleh
Korn -- at times interesting enough... but still meh
(some) In Flames -- sorta... yeah... i guess... s'alright
Metallica (how could you miss them out dude?) -- Three words... Kill 'Em All
Crowbar --- dunno
Pantera --- meh
Dark Angel -- awesome
Sepultura --- dont see why so many people like them... i tried schizophrenia... but... i just don't see any greatness behind it...
Pitchshifter -- dunno
SOAD -- probably the best nu-metal around (first album is best)

That was Toni Iommi, and Geezer Butler.

I find it difficult to like Megadeth, Dave Mustaine is one of the most arrogant pricks ever to enter the music scene, and I think his voice in most 'Deth songs is quite poor...Also my English teacher looks just like him!!(My english teacher is a she which makes it more funny)

What death metal songs have you heard?

Tellling the differnce between say, two cannible corpse songs may not be so easy, but telling the differnce between maybe a nile song and an arch enemy or Death song should be fairly obvious.

I don't know the titles or even the bands. I had a neighbor for two years who was big into metal, had posters with bloody angels and bloody people and dead people all over his walls. I recognize a few of the names in the original list, but I couldn't assign the names to the songs.

But anyway, I heard a lot of metal through him, and none of the songs stood out to me, or really differentiated themselves.

But like I said, I consider myself pretty open minded to music, so if you have some downloads, I would be happy to hear them.

Folk metal???
Actually chances are you'll like folk metal before you'll like death metal...

I don't know the titles or even the bands. I had a neighbor for two years who was big into metal, had posters with bloody angels and bloody people and dead people all over his walls. I recognize a few of the names in the original list, but I couldn't assign the names to the songs.

But like I said, I consider myself pretty open minded to music, so if you have some downloads, I would be happy to hear them.
Well from the sound of it, your neighbor listened to bands like Cannibal Corpse or Morbid Angel... I don't much like them either...

But anyways about the downloads... It is difficult to get into death metal from the start, especially if you don't have much experience in metal in general. If you'd like to try out metal in general, it would be best if you start off with traditional heavy metal, power metal, prog metal, and maybe even folk metal.

Now as for some startin' reccommendations (I'll try and find downloads... pending):

Opeth -- they talented but IMO they try to to do too much... and end up with disjointed songs that are too long... and have a few enjoyable parts... I do like some of their shorter songs though. And it's not that I just don't like long songs, it's just I think Opeth can't do long songs well... Now take a band like say Moonsorrow... They can do long songs extremely well.
The Gathering -- dunno em
Aghora --- dunno em

I like one song by one of those bands, "Turbo Lover" by Judas Preist.

To me, 95% is generally way over the top guitar work and singing, or horrid screaming with no melody to speak of. I can't even tell the difference between two death metal songs.
Everyone says that!

What death metal songs have you heard?

Tellling the differnce between say, two cannible corpse songs may not be so easy, but telling the differnce between maybe a nile song and an arch enemy or Death song should be fairly obvious.
Arch Enemy? Is that stuff actually considered death metal?

Aha! Thrash pretty close to hardcore in many respects... (as far as musical trends go one evolved from the other--don't remember which from which). So it is not so farfetched to label hardcore... Now I would debate this, but I've heard too little of Arch Enemy stuff to remember what genre they were exactly...

And I believe Lawnmowerville (is he still around? probably not) would agree with me on the Arch Enemy being hardcore. And he was the NS metal guru.

Ensiferum - Haven't heard them.
Diamond Head - Haven't heard them.

Hmm, looks like there are some bands I need to check out. :)

But I should add that no list of respectable metal bands should be without Symphony X... so awesome... and nobody has mentioned Kamelot, Rhapsody, Nightwish, and Stratovarius either...

And may I ask why several people consider Pink Floyd to be metal?...

And may I add my support for Queensryche, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Fates Warning.

Ack - I'm not saying they're untalented. Far from it; Blind Guardian is quite talented. What I'm trying to get across is that their vocals aren't quite my cup of tea. And I guess "hoarse shouting" would be a better way to put it than screaming, now that I think about it.

In a way, yes, but it should be subtle, in that you just experience it. Like a movie, in a good movie, you just kind of slip into the story, while in others, the plot is kind of force fed.

Most of those metal songs tend to beat you over the head with anger, sadness, or grandeur.

Tom Waits is the greatest, within 6 months of listening to him, he has surpassed all of my favorite bands. It is a little ridiculous to call those bands melodramatic and listen to Waits, though. He is as theatrical as it gets.

In that case, there's a whole bunch of stoner doom metal bands you may like... (I must confess I don't know any more besides Goatsnake and Electric Wizard... It's just those two are difficult to find as it is--for cheap that is.)

But I'll try and find some more bands you may like... based on that... I'll link you some harder stuff--with growled vocals (which is just the thing that ruins death and black metal for most people). And I'll try and find you some less "melodramatic" music.

I can easily debate some of these selections...

Firstly Candlemass is epic doom... and the guy did say he doesn't like melodramatic music... and Candlemass seems as melodramatic as it can be.

And I do love Monster Magnet but I wouldn't call it metal... It's hard rock, but does have that weird stoner doomy vibe to it, so I'll agree with that.

QoSA also not metal... and I sorta like... but it's definately not stoner doom... It's stoner rock yes. Vittos will probably like them, but still not really stoner doom.

Now I don't know the others too well, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Hate to sound so thankless, but eh... I don't want to delete my impulsive retorts.

Although thanks. I myself might check some of those out.

Yeah. I never really labelled them as metal myself, but they're connected to that whole stoner metal scene.

Yeah, but it shows through in songs like Mexicola. They're a rock version of Kyuss, really.

"Do you like any of these metal bands?" version...5...or something"

Nope. Don't like any of them.

Why do you ask? Are you taking a poll? Or just trying to rate the talents of a number of questionably talented musicians?

Or, more directly: Who do you like? Which bands do you feel are unworthy of making your list?

The few people who post in this thread claiming to not liking any of them...

The question must be asked...

Have you heard music from all bands listed?

EDIT: This thread is turning out so awesome. We have here genuine openmindedness to differing genres of music, without any of that childish genre eliticism that almost always tends to taint threads like this. Is this harbinger of what is to come or merely an anomaly? I think the latter. But still so far so good.

Well they always sounded a bit hair metallish... And the songs I've heard weren't too bad, but weren't really spectacular. But if you could suggest an album... I'll keep an eye out for it.

Pick up Operation Mindcrime (the one pictured), and for a non-concept album, grab "Tribe".

The purpose of the original thread was just to share some musical tastes, show people new bands they might like, and that sort of thing. And perhaps an informal poll. But it also turned out to be a great place chat for people of similar musical tastes, so it was reincarnated several times, the laste one was a loooong time ago though, and I though we should try it again.

And as Amerigo pointed out its been quite a cool thread so far, with everyone being pretty fair about eachother's tastes.

And I don't think anyone is questioning the talents of the musicians (except maybe Venom <_<) because, although many people may not enjoy their compositions, most won't deny they are talented...

Amerigo,
it would be fitting that, out of all the metal genres, I would like Stoner Metal, but from what I have heard you are right.

Kanabia,
I know Kyuss and Monster Magnet already, and the Fu Manchu and Fireball Ministry songs were pretty good. Amerigo was right about Candlemass, I can't stand their lead singer.

For both of you guys, what do you think of Clutch (http://home.comcast.net/~emailsforpay/rockZ/C_D/clutch.html)? I have been a fan of them for a few years, and I never knew what specific genre they were, but they sound like stoner rock.

Just the band I haven't heard much of.

But I mean maybe after all the death and black metal I listen to, hearing Blind Guardian.... the vocals sound incredible.

So I guess I may be a bit biased toward their vocalwork.

Oh and I don't really mention Hansi, because its their choruses that are epic, but he's quite the vocalist--not a Bruce Dickinson, but still great.

Yeah, I haven't listened to much black/death metal - and the stuff I have listened to just seems too over-the-top evil most of the time. But, I do find black metal band pictures very (http://ruthlessreviews.com/top10/10blackmetal.html) entertaining! (http://ruthlessreviews.com/top10/10blackmetal2.html) :D

i call myself pure metal cos i listen to metal... obviously very different metal to your definition of metal, only recognising one band on your list :p

of my list you quoted:

Death - haven't heard anything but want to. if P2P worked on my ISP they'd probably be the first thing i'd download
Mayhem - never head of
King Diamond - cannot stand at all. a friend likes em so i have heard a fair bit - just not my style...
Bathory - never heard of
Venom - bought one cd, returned it cos it was shit
Nile and Artillery - both never heard of

i like my metal more thrash and grindcore than... King Diamond ;)

Mayhem - never head of

Really? The story behind Mayhem is pretty legendary.

To quote from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayhem_%28band%29#Biography)

"In 1991, Dead committed suicide by means of a shotgun blast to the head (he had also slit his wrists several times). The bullets which he used had been sent to him by Count Grishnackh (the sole member of the black metal band Burzum and the man who later killed Euronymous), who apparently thought this was cool but denied having any advance knowledge of the suicide. Dead's body was discovered, along with a suicide note reading "Excuse all the blood", in a back room of the band's house. Euronymous quickly took pictures (which later appeared in the booklets for several subsequent Mayhem releases and other bands' materials) of the bloody scene using a polaroid camera. Persistent rumors assert that he then cooked and ate pieces of Dead's brain, and that fragments of Dead's skull were collected and forged into necklaces by both Euronymous and Hellhammer. In 1993 Live in Leipzig was released as the band's tribute to Dead. The release was followed by the famous bootleg Dawn Of The Black Hearts. Its cover featured a photo of Dead's corpse after the suicide. After Dead's suicide and all of the police and media attention it garnered, Necrobutcher made the decision to leave Mayhem, thinning the band's ranks down to just two."

"Some people seem to think that Vikernes was jealous of Euronymous's "evil reputation", but that's just pure speculation. One morning he traveled along with Blackthorn (of the band Thorns) to Euronymous's apartment. There he stabbed Euronymous to death with a viking knife. The autopsy revealed that Euronymous had suffered twenty-three stab wounds: two to the head, five to the neck, and sixteen to the back. Grishnackh left a key piece of evidence, however: a copy of a record contract (used as the pretense for his visit to Euronymous) with his bloody fingerprints on it. Soon Grishnackh was apprehended by police and charged with murder. He continued in prison to record for his one-man project Burzum. With only Hellhammer remaining, Mayhem ceased to exist."

As for their music, meh. Oh, and Vikernes (Count Grishnackh) is a nazi, according to the wiki article on him. I didn't know that.

I agree, all the church burning shit is stupid (although it is interesting to read about) and the most "metal" (if you want to go that route) is the thrash no costumes just go and play music ethic. Alot of death metal bands and stuff have that same thing going. Black metal I haven't seen that much live except Behemoth who had makeup but thats all so it was still good. King Diamond puts on an elaborate stage show, but its all in good fun and he doesn't take himself too seriously and try and kill Christians or something. So basically....as long as you aren't an asshole itscool. I still like Mayhem's stuff though (Buried By Time and Dust is probably my favorite Mayhem song) so whatever.

Anyways....I guess we all are pretty much agreed on that so not much of a debate yet :D

Of all the bands on that list that I've heard, or know a little something about, none of them are Nu Metal, despite your screen name...

I know that...I think I've even mentioned in my sig that I don't really listen to numetal.
