So, those of you who are familiar with George Romero please answer me this.
Do you think he's a smart and talented filmmaker or just a hack that writes zombie movies?

I think he's a smart, talented filmaker who makes good horror films and excellent zombie films.
Like any film-maker though, he does have his weaker moments. (Ugh, Bruiser)

He is a talented (zombie) film maker who has always included some great social commentary and criticism in his movies. What I like about that is Romero's way of creating such undertone instead of rubbing it in your face.
Having just seen "Land of the Dead" yesterday on its German opening day I must say that even after 20 years after Day of the Dead came out - good, funny, gruesome (:D) splatter-stuff.
Groan... Brains!
I echo German Nightmare's sentiments, exept I haven't sen the new one yet. Romero's awesome. :D

I watched 'Land...' on Wednesday, and can't say I was that impressed.
Part of the reason is of course that 'Dawn...' and 'Day...' were awesome and so it had a big rep to live up to. But it was a bit silly really. Good concept, but it felt rushed in it's execution.
The Zombie evolving theme was too quick, but I guess that unless you were going to make 2 movies it would have been too difficult to drag it out with them slowly getting more 'human'.
Who knows, maybe they'll do a sequel that will show them trying to act out their old lives. It was kinda left open for that (another thing I thought was a bit silly - c'mon, they're flesh-eating zombies! Wipe them out!).
As a satirical comment on how no matter what happens (whether being dead or being surrounded by zombies), people will try to 'normalise' their lives - which also means exploiting the weak for money - was pretty good. But I still prefer 'Dawn...' for it's 'even dead, people'll go shopping' dig. What else is there in the average person's life?
Really though, Romero should have kept with the flow of the first three movies and called it 'Evening of the Dead' or 'Mid-afternoon teatime of the Dead'. Something classy.
BTW, the Mexican guy in the movie (the one who steals the truck) - what else has he been in? He looks real familar, but I can't place him and it's bugging me.
Out of interest, what was the rating for this movie in your country? When I went, there was a kid who looked no older than 10 in the theatre. If I'd seen a movie like this when I was that age, I'd have had nightmares for weeks after. Surely it was a fairly high rating.
It was rated R in the US (the second-highest non-porn rating).
