America helps the world

I hate it how people keep saying, "America should do more to help the world, America should have seen it coming." Especially when its from other countries like France, who don't do crap for anyone but themselves. We supply the world, we help it. The majority of aid for people in developing countries comes from the U.S. The US leads in providing funding for medicinal research for diseases like AIDS. So stop saying America should do more or see disasters coming.

Actualy, the US gives less of its income in aid than most other developed countries.

Not that I really want to get involved in this thread, but even a smaller percentage of the US GDP can add up to a bigger total ammount than most other countries give.

What has France got to do with this?
I really wish America would 'stop' helping the world (unilaterally) and join in to global organisations- even within the much reviled UN there are several that do good work- UNESCO, UNICEF, UNHCHR, ICC etc etc

America doesn't need to help the rest of the world. The rest of the world needs to help themselves. Because America is a working democracy and teh most powerful nation in the world means people will look to us for help. If it were not that way, we wouldn't be in Iraq right now losing our lives for the sake of the lives of people who made their country the way it was.

Actually, France was one of the first countries to offer relief after the New Orleans hurricane disaster. Bush has the nerve to refuse foreign aid while children are being raped, cops are being shot at by bands of armed men, thousands of people are left starving and defenseless, and FEMA has its head up its ass. He's dead set on the USA handling the chaos by itself; talk about vanity.

To be honest I see the opposite view expressed more frequently; the conviction that some Americans seem to hold that the US is the ONLY country to provide aid to the rest of the world.

Umm...
You do understand that Britain created the country in 1948 when we told them "the old king of Greater Syria should have something to rule, now that you've created Israel out of his holy land*, chopped the rest into pieces, and given the bit that holds Damascus to the French" right? And that we've put most of their dictators into power, and we told the people "rise up against Saddam, we'll back you!" then sold him the weapons he used to gas them, and...

*I can't remember exactly, but the spread was roughly 40% was already owned by external powers, the Arabs sold the Jews 6% to have a homeland, the rest was Britain's "We'll bomb the shit out of you until you get out of there."

I think you might have put the ' ''s around the wrong bit there.

When people calculate the "help" that America gives the rest of the world, one should consider that a lot of that aid is actually loans, and those loans must be spent on American companies. Since these companies are free from the regular rules of supply and demand they can charge whatever they want. Often about 5X the amount that their competitors charge. But when the country has several million dollars that it's not allowed to spend on any non-US company, then the company can charge whatever it damn well pleases, content in the knowledge that several million dollars will be spent on their services.

So the US sends several million dollars to, let's say Saipan. Then those millions of dollars come right back to us through our companies. And the Saipan still owes us the money with intrest.

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More than 20 countries, from allies Germany and Japan to prickly Venezuela and poor Honduras, have offered to help the United States cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina."

While the UN can't act in an official manner until we ask for help, looks like they're sending aid to US relief agencies. I suspect the OP'd claim they were trying to invade if they actually had relief forces move in.

To be honest I would have been shocked if it had gone any other way. Could you really picture America taking charity from other nations, no matter how badly it needed it?

Hahahaha. What gives you the impression that the old US of A is REALLY helping the world?

"I give you American dollars - but you must buy expensive American goods that do nothing to help your development. Not to mention I subsidise my cows and wheat so that you can't compete with me and I will buy up all your farmers and you will have to listen to me, not France or Russia or China! Hahahahahahaha!"

Some help.

The US helps the world in the same way the Honourable East India Company helped India and China. The elites were invited to participate in their business ventures, and became rich beyond their wildest dreams. The people could get stuffed.

No, seriously dude, as an American, I'd readily admit to.....well, both sides of the story. Yeah, America "helps" an awful lot of the word, but a lot of that is turned around as a great big "You owe me!" later on. Which sucks. On the other hand, those of us who actually bother to be worldly enough to give a crap *raises hand* go about it by entirely different, sometimes less legal means. And if that means your cousin gets 3 years in jail because her missions trip involved 20 crates of bandages, about 200 blankets, a whole lot of toilet paper, and more Tylenol than you can shake a stick at, and the only reason you're still free and "innocent" is because you couldn't get out of class for that week, well, that's just a price we sometimes have to pay.

On the other hand, I kinda wish it had been me who'd gotten arrested for it.....I even had a speech prepared and everything
