It's all rather depressing really.

I haven't really been able to think straight since the catastrophe in New Orleans. Not only is the loss of human life staggering, but I'm seeing now how damn cold-blooded people are.

We have looters, we have scammers, we have fraud, we have muggings, we have rape, all kinds of shit. We have people saying we shouldn't send relief effort because these people were asking for it for living there. We have people who give more concern to the rising gas prices from the hurricane than the actual loss of life. We have the news organizations getting fat and happy off all the news coverage, distracting police and rescue workers, and generally getting in the way. And our government is, for all intents and purposes, twiddling their collective thumbs.

Not only that, but things look worse than ever for our country. We're as polarized as ever.

I find it all rather depressing.

I feel the same. It is depressing and makes me say WTF is going on? Like Stephistan's post about "foamy" talking about the hurricane. the newspeople are having a field day with this utter destruction and loss of life. also the other thread about a guy saying it is unconstitutional for the government to send help. wtf is that? really society has become screwed up and the blame is on us people.

I read an article (which i will go look for and post it) about a women whos husband died in thier home after katrina hit. she wrapped him up in a blanket and put him on some floating 2x4's and went out. she waited for help and watched as car after car kept passing her not stopping to help. its pathetic how cold-clooded people can be...

It's times like this that make me think that what this country needs right now is another revolution, just to clear out all the crap in society. Like one giant enema...

i agree, it's very depressing. especially the part where i'd like to say "it's unbelievable how crass these people can be," but i know it would be a lie.

I would just like to know what is taking so long for real aid to help the people of New Orleans. If we can send aid to the tsunami victims in Asia surely we can send help within our own borders quickly. It wasn't as if we didn't have any warning that a hurricane was coming!

I don't get why people have to start acting like assholes when something like this comes up. If everyone just worked together and were nice to each other things would be MUCH easier. I don't understand why there has to be SOMEONE who wants to fuck everything up for everybody at the expense of their wants and needs.

I know this sounds really cold, but when the San Francisco earthquake struck, the National Guard had orders to shoot any looters and any law-breakers on site.

I personally think they should start implementing that. I know that the situation is really, really desperate, but I don't think it is an excuse for people to snipe at people trying to evacuate infants from a hospital. Usually one or two shots in the air, or one person as an example at worst at least lessens the situation (at least during the SF quake), but think of the people at risk. The National Guard and police are saying they're zero-tolerance, and then letting them rob bigscreen TVs and rape, pillage, etc other people. Now I think they should start showing their zero-tolerence.

It is all a damn shame and an embarassment to the US. I've never seen any issue become so politicized so quickly.

Yeah, but I already thought that through, and so did the National Guard and police, who determine that that isn't looting per se. I'm talking about those that are shooting the people trying to get them out, and those pillaging people's houses for personal and private belongings.

what's the government supposed to do, take a giant vacuum cleaner down there and vacuum up all the water?

i would imagine there is no quick fix to such a situation.

what pisses me off most about it is that the mayor, news media, etc., hollered until they were blue in the face for everyone to leave...

and i know some wanted to get out but couldn't... it's those who stayed behind to loot others' possessions that have my panties in a knot.

also... doubtless there are some who actually went to new orleans to be able to loot.

these people need to be punished severely.

and

we were way more polarized during the revolutionary war, the civil war, and vietnam (to name just three), and we managed to pull through those.
