Because they wanted Kuwait's oil and the US sent mixed signals about whether we'd tolerate such an invasion.

Kind of ironic seeing as how Kuwait was slant drilling Iraqi oil at the time using equipment bought from US companies.

Yeah, it was basically about oil. In 1990 Iraq had just finished a long, destructive war with Iran (with the backing of the West). Saddam was left with a big army and a ruined economy so he decided to use his army to invade Kuwait and seize all their oilfields. He thought the West would accept this as his reward for containing Iran for 10 years.

He didn't think that the west would notice him invade Kuwait.
 <-Kuwait :sniper: <-Iraq :) <- The West
Kuwait had weapons of mass destruction. And a really bad dictator. And supported terrorism.
One of my Military Friends who was in the Intelligence Division (so I'll admit that it's an unverifiable source) told me it was because of the money Kuwait lent Saddam to build his Military Machine. Saddam went in to remove all traces of the debt so that he wouldn't pay it back.
Kinda makes sense when you consider the amount of resistance the Iraqi Army put up against coalition forces.

I heard it had something to do with Kuwaitis using slant drilling to take Iraqi oil. Plus of course the US gave signals that it would be okay with an Iraqi takeover of Kuwait. Bush to Saddam - Gotcha bitches! :D

Hussein was thinking, "Y'know, in fifteen years, the magic will be gone. May as well have some fun with this country of mine and auger it before it gets stale."

When Saddam retreated from Iran, he wanted to rebuild his economy. Of course, he chose not to work at it, but instead, simply extract it from the earth. That's one reason why he invaded Kuwait, but by far not the only. You see, Hussein always had a vision that stemmed from his pan-Arab leanings at the time. He would begin again where the United Arab Republic left off, and create a pan-Arab state under his control. He would start by invading the weakest, Kuwait. Next, he'd go to Saudi Arabia, and when the Saudis detected an Iraqi army buildup at their border, that was really when Desert Shield began.
That was also the reason his bombed Israel. If Israel replied, the Arab world would revolt, abandon desert storm, and fight with Hussein. The Arab leaders that didn't would be overthrown. Thus, it was wise that Washington advised Israel not to fight back. Otherwise, we may see a state from Morrocco to India, and from Turkey to Sudan, and all of it controlled by a ruthless toltalitarian dictator.
