It's one I've heard so often.
"We do so much for the rest of the world, but would they do the same for us? No!"
Really?
Countries around the world ALWAYS step up to the plate in a humanitarian crisis. Even in the midst of ideological disputes, people understand that the poor schmuck caught in a natural disaster ain't the one who sets policy.
It's how we go from political rhetoric against the Mullah's of Iran to sending aid when an earthquake strikes. It's how we put aside issues about involvement in East Timor (and other abuses) to jumping in to help out after the tsunami.
But they'd never do that for us right?
We have that moral high ground.
Except that when natural disasters strike the devoped world, even generally disliked superpowers, what happens? Same thing. The offers to help come flowing in. Chavez offers oil to ease the price spike. Fuck him. The UN offers it's considerable experience and manpower at helping refugees from disaster. Fuck them too.
We're big. We're strong. We don't NEED their help.
True, I suppose. Although if you asked a person stuck in an attic in Luisiana, or wondering where the hell to get their needed medication in Mississipi right now they might just say "Fuck it! I dont' care if it's a blue helmet or green on the guy on the helicopter. Just get my ass out of here!
But still, the point is that the next time you puff your chest out and act all self righteous saying "we give, we give, but does anyone give in return?" Remember this week and anser your own question.
Yes they do. Or they would.... if only you could put your stupid pride aside and let them.
