BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Air strikes have flattened insurgent safe houses used by militants linked to al Qaeda in western Iraq, the U.S. Marines told CNN Tuesday.

The air attacks near the Syrian border killed at least seven militants, the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force said.

A top operative called Abu Islam was among the dead, the force said.

Police in Baghdad reported that 56 civilians were killed in the strikes.

They said police contacts in the region told them 40 civilians died in one house and 16 in another. Two children survived, they added.

A U.S. military spokesman said he had no specifics yet on the strike.

Considering that it's pretty much SOP for the terrorists to surround themselves with civvies, why am I not surprised. The real question becomes how many of those killed knew of the terrorists in their midsts

And what would be the implication of that? That they deserved to die?

The US air strike early on Tuesday near the Iraqi western town of Qaim killed 56 civilians, said an Interior Ministry source.

"We have information that the US aircraft pounded areas near the town of Qaim near the Syrian border, destroying four houses and killing a total of 56 people," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Sixteen people were killed in one of the houses, which was leveled in the attack, he said, adding 40 others were killed in a second house, where three families gathered.

Only two boys aged eight and ten survived in the second house, he added.

A US military spokesman said that its aircraft shelled suspected al-Qaida hideouts near Qaim, killing several militants, including Abu Islam.

"There was a total of three strikes targeting terrorist safe houses and Abu Islam and several of his associates were killed," said the spokesman in Baghdad.

Earlier, the Qatar-based al-Jazeera satellite television reported that the US aircraft carried out strikes on villages near Qaim, killing more than 40 people and wounding dozens.

"US aircraft pounded a house at about 2:00 a.m. (2200 GMT Monday) in Karabla village," the channel quoted witnesses as saying.

"Thirty people are still under debris and only five wounded civilians were admitted to the medical center, which was also attacked by US aircraft. Some workers were wounded in the attack," medical sources were quoted as saying.

Well, it's not like you can have these terrorist sympathizers saving the lives of the insurgents, or their neighbours.

So, if a terrorist walked into your house, you'd fully expect the US to bomb the devil out of you and yours and that would be justified?

Consider this...some guys rob a bank and take refuge in a safehouse in a residential area. Four 500lb bombs are dropped on it.

How many people from the neighbourhood are you going to kill?

Ofcourse it would be justified. In fact I would expect the U.S. to bomb the hell out of my entire neighbourhood and to launch a series of bombing runs on the entire city.

...how else are the execs at Lockheed-Martin, Bell Helicopter, Raytheon and Boeing going to afford their new yachts?

This is hardly the first time the american solders have bombed a huge number of civilians. And they think they have such a great army...
Good equipment, yes. Well trained soldiers, not very. Too bad the brits don't have more men there, they handled the situation much better.

What sucks is the real story is never going to be known because the sources are not relible for either side.

But there is ONE fact taht has come out of this...

When did "insurgents" become "terrorists"? It's not like the US is sending civilians over there...

Orwell would have been proud of the relabelling.

Well to be fair (not like I think Gulf Republics thought this or even has the ability to grasp it), if they were in fact AQ I would call them terrorists too - because they are saying that although the majority of Insurgents are from Iraq and targeting the troops, the foreign fighters are the ones killing civilians with suicide bombings and threats. So I in fact do agree with you that the majority of insurgents aren't terrorists but instead the only legitimate military force in iraq, the foreign fighters (AQ and US *and coalition forces*) are terrorists.

Shock and awe is a terrorist tactic if I ever saw one.
