Definition of a one hit wonder: an artist(s) whose body of work is pure shit, except for one excellent song.
"Shook Ones Part II" by Mobb Deep
"Lose Yourself" by Eminem
That would have to be either "Blue" by Eifel 51 or "Knocked Down" by Chumbawumba (sp?)
"Lose Yourself" by Eminem
Eminem has had lots of hits. Its only recently that people don't automaticly obsese over it.

I think all of Eminem's "hits" blow except for Lose Yourself. I hate his nasally, whiny voice. His own beats suck (such as Mosh) and his sampled beats never match his lyrics. I do clarify the definition of one hit wonder on the first post..
Could a one hit wonder, be a band that released one album, that wasn't a hit and remained extremely obscure, despite its inherent good quality... Then the band just sorta disappeared into nothingness. As in... no one can find out if any of the members are still alive.
If so... I nominate Black Swan.

Encore Sucks balls, but every song on Marshall Mathers LP is amazing, Along with Guilty Concenes(cant spell)

I like Encore. Though it is not as good as Marshal Mathers LP when it came out. I do think his beats have gotten better.

I may date myself, but "Saturday Night" by some group from Scotland (I can't, for the life of me, recall their name), Also, "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks and now, to really date myself, who recalls the "New Seekers" and "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing?" Yeah, you know, the song that they sold out to Coca-Cola with in 1970 and that is still played today for Coke commercials.

I have three favorite one hit wonders...wich for all of you silly people who dont know what such a thing is...
A "One Hit Wonder"...is simply any band that has ONE single to hit the top ten charts.
My favorites include:
Faith No More. (Technically a OHW, "epic".)
Queens of the Stone Age: No one Knows.
Corrosion of Conformity: "Albatross".
BTW...in the same way these guys are technically OHW's, so are the Greatful Dead. (Touch of Grey)
A lot of people classify Devo as a one hit wonder, but their early stuff got enough circulation on MTV that most people know Jocko Homo (Are we not men? We Are Devo!) nearly as well as Whip It.
For a truer one hit wonder, i nominate Gary Numan (although he was apparently much more popular in England, his only hit here was, of course, Cars).
Honorable mention also goes to Jean-Jacques Perrey for Baroque Hoedown (The Disneyland Mainstreet Electrical Parade Theme) and Gershon Kingsley for Popcorn.

Can't Find My Way Home - Blind Faith
Excellent album, though.
For What It's Worth - Buffalo Springfield
Went on to form CSNY.
American Pie - Don McLean
No, Vincent, as good as it is, does not count as a hit.
All Right Now - Free
And then Paul Rodgers rocked out with Bad Company.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - Iron Butterfly
True one hit wonder.
Blinded By The Light - Manfred Mann's Rare Earth Band
Not to be confused with Manfred Mann by himself.
Summer Breeze - Seals & Crofts
They did that song about abortion that made everyone hate them.
Wild Thing - The Troggs
True one hit wonder.
Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
I haven't heard of anything else he did.
Runnin' On Empty - Jackson Browne
Maybe I'll add more later.
Gimme Some Lovin' - Spencer Davis Group
Though they did write the oft covered I'm A Man.

Werewolves of London - Warren Zevon
I haven't heard of anything else he did.
Actually, I believe Warren Zevon had a second song that hit British charts.
Although, I cant remember what it was, and I wouldnt place any money on it.
-Just Googled.
Apparently, his last album "The Wind" went to #8 on American charts, but no single from that album charted.
Thus, technically making him, a OHW, unless Im correct about the British charts.
"Come on Eileen"
Dixie's Midnight Runners

My least favorite song ever...and also a OHW:
"Spirit in the Sky" : Norman Greenbaum
David Essex - 'Rock On'
This song is DANGEROUS on a head full of mushrooms. I had something like an epiliptic fit when it came on. Fucking 80's movie stars and their delusions of rock and roll grandeur. Motherfuckers.
Heroin Girl by Everclear. The rest of their stuff is mundane, but if all of their songs were as good as this one, they'd be one of my favourite bands.
Faith No More. (Technically a OHW, "epic".)
Ugh, that's probably their worst song.
Queens of the Stone Age: No one Knows.
Over here, "Little Sister" made the top 10 as well. Odd how QOTSA's shitty songs are their most popular. :p
(Well, No One Knows isn't bad, but by no means their best)

Those songs hit the charts, but "Mexicola" off the debut wasnt a single.

I think that album is thier second worst one.

Im not wild about the singer, but I do like the heavy-driven riffs like "100 degrees", and "Demon Cleaner".
The Silent Papacy

"Major Tom" by Peter Schilling. I dunno if he went any further in Europe or not, but that was all we ever heard from him on this side of the pond.
'Major Tom' sounds a little unoriginal anyway. 'Space Oddity' by David Bowie has the lines 'major tom'. Maybe Peter Schilling's song is just a cover (i dont know, i haven't heard it).
I nominate 'My Sharona' by the Knack as my favourite one-hit wonder.

To use the original poster's definition: a group/artist whose work is shit except for one song:
"Creep" by Radiohead
"Clocks" by Coldplay
"Push" by Matchbox twenty (though they don't bother me too much if I haven't heard them in a while.)
"Harder to Breathe" by Maroon 5 (though they've only had one album, maybe they'll be better on the second album.)
"Sean Olson" by Korn (on the Crow: City of Angels soundtrack)
To use the real definition:
"Pepper" by Butthole Surfers (actually one of their worse songs, but they deserve mentioning anyway.)
"What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes
"Friends of P" by the Rentals
"Epic" by Faith No More (a truly underrated band.)
"Joey" by Concrete Blonde (another truly underrated band.)
Other thoughts related to the thread:
The Goo Goo Dolls should've broken up before they released "Iris".
The New Radicals album was surprisingly a good album.

and... perhaps the worst song of all-time, and the group that, as surprising as it was that this song made it on the radio, you knew it would be their last hit:
Iron Butterfly -- Inagaddadavita
This song is GREAT for a laugh!

The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star.
It was the first video shown on MTV when it started back in the 80's.

MC Hammer indeed had more than one hit...
-Here Comes the Hammer
-U Can't Touch This
-Pray
-Have You Seen Her?
-Too Legit to Quit
-Addams Family theme
Tought so...
unfortunately, some artists are not one hit wonder :)
"I like big butts"
"Put 'em on the glass"
"I'm too sexy"

Men Without Hats -- The Safety Dance
They may have done better in Canada, but in the US only "The Safety Dance" did well. On a side note, I loved this song in "Bio-Dome".

and this guy (though he actually had some talent):
Terence Trent D'Arby (sp?):

probably my favorite one-hit wonder song, and one of my favorite songs of the 80s, is:
A-Ha -- Take On Me
"I like big butts" -- Baby Got Back
Whatever...you knew right away what song it was, didn't you? :D

Timbuk 3 -- The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades
Rob Base -- It Takes Two
Faith No More -- Epic
Faith No More kicks ass and they did Ashes To Ashes, but you are right that's the only two songs you hear on the radio, and not very often these days

My favourite one hit wonder would probably be Golden Earring's 'Radar Love'
Not my favourite song, but the best one hit wonder I've heard
They also releaseda well-known song called Twilight Zone, but I'm not sure where it went in the charts.
Louie Louie - The Kingsmen
Thirty Days In The Hole - Humble Pie
Summer In The City - Lovin' Spoonful
Journey To The Center Of The Mind - Amboy Dukes
Green-Eyed Lady - Sugarloaf
Time Has Come Today - Chamber Brothers
Something In The Air - Thunderclap Newman
Green Grass & High Tides - Outlaws
Love The One You're With - Stephen Stills
All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople
Rock N' Roll Hoochie Koo - Rick Derringer
Hocus Pocus - Focus
Bang A Gong (Get It On) - T. Rex
The Letter - The Boxtops
Easy Livin' - Uriah Heep
Fixin' To Die Rag - Country Joe & The Fish
Mississippi Queen - Mountain
Never Been Any Reason - Head East
Two I'm Not As Sure Of:
Sex and Candy - Marcie Playground
Rock N' Roll All Night - Kiss
'Schnappi' - Schnappi (even use it as my name in Guild Wars :p )
'Live is life' (spelling?) - Opus
'Axel F' - Harold Faltermayer (the original)
'Japanese boy' - Aneka (GTA 3, anyone?)
'Don't worry be happy' - Bobby McFerrin
'Words' - FR David ('girls song', but I rather like it)
Bob the Builder :D and the worst-Crazy Frog.
Bob the Builder :D and the worst-Crazy Frog.
Lol, that Crazy Frog song is on its second round...it was a hit the first time around when it was the theme to the tv show 'Miami Vice'...
"Pepper" by Butthole Surfers (actually one of their worse songs, but they deserve mentioning anyway.)
Ooh, yes, forgot them.
Actually, I think Electriclarryland is a really underrated album. It was the first Butthole Surfers album I bought, because i'd heard of them and knew it'd probably be something i'd like...plus the cover was awesome. and I liked it. It's not as good as their earlier stuff, no...but for what it is, it's not bad.
Though I disagree with your labelling everything Radiohead have done as pure shit. :p (And besides, they've had other singles hit the charts...so they aren't a one-hit wonder)

Two I'm Not As Sure Of:
Sex and Candy - Marcie Playground
Rock N' Roll All Night - Kiss
Sex and Candy is Marcy Playground's only hit single to date.
As for Kiss, "Rock and Roll All Night" hit #37 on the charts, and "Beth" hit #7.
Im currently trying to find out wether "Detriot, Rock City" charted.
But technically, if we are defining a OHW, as having only one Top 40 hit,, they dont qualify.
If were calling it Top 20...they might.

The New Radicals album was surprisingly a good album.
The young punks know where it's at. The only other people I've met who will admit to owning that album are Metalheads and Goths. And you can't go wrong when one of your songs is called "Jehovah Made This Joint For You". :D

I'm glad that "Pepper" made them well known, but did they really have to recreate it with the awful Weird Revolution album?
Though I disagree with your labelling everything Radiohead have done as pure shit. :p (And besides, they've had other singles hit the charts...so they aren't a one-hit wonder)Well, the original poster's definition of a "one hit wonder" was a group/artist with one good song. Yes, he changed the actual definition, but I used it anyway.
I admit I was being a little bit harsh, they have three or four good songs that I've heard. And I've heard three or four truly awful songs from them, too. I think it was a harsh reaction from my distaste of what I've heard of their OK Computer album, and falsetto singing in general.
The young punks know where it's at. The only other people I've met who will admit to owning that album are Metalheads and Goths. And you can't go wrong when one of your songs is called "Jehovah Made This Joint For You". I agree. Perhaps the reason why I like it because, while I'm a punk, I'm also something of a metalhead and a goth as well.

"With Arms Wide Open" didn't hit the UK charts?
I hope not. When Creed broke up I wept with joy. I think my favorite Creed appearance is in the emogame (http://www.emogame.com) where they admit they were nothing more than grunge revivalists.
