Are you proud to be a citizen of your country? If so or if not, why?
I for example, am really ashamed to be a german, because most germans are really small, ugly people, who only find satisfaction in hampering other people's life.

I moved from England when I was six months old so I barely feel any affiliation to it. Makes it difficult for me to understand really patriotic people. I feel closest to Ireland having spent more years of my life there than anywhere else, but to me a strip of land is a strip of land and everywhere is unique in its' own ways. I believe you make places your homes. Makes no difference to me.

30-08-2005, 00:35
I've never really understood patriotism. I'm not ashamed to be British, and I appreciate how lucky I was to be born into relative comfort and relative freedom. But I don't see how it would make much difference if I had happened to be born in France, or Ireland, or Germany, or Massachusetts instead, I don't understand how pride is an applicable concept, and I would like to think I value the interests of all humans and all societies equally.

I'm not proud of my country, too. Why? I live in Germany.
If I feel the urge to be patriotic, I tend to love my hometown Rostock, or Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, or Eastgermany. But the whole country? Never.
And all you people wondering whats wrong with us Germans in that point: try to convince people you've said to you're proud to be German that you're no nazi... it's impossible.
It's mostly our history, that it's no longer implemented in society and culture to have something like feelings toward your home. That's a pity, but it's the way it is.

Personally, I dislike many things here, but I'm not sure if I could live somewhere else. It's... well, it's my home.

And, please, tell me what's so awesome about speaking german? (well, yes, you can read Nietzsche and Luhmann and Büchner and Tucholsky and Schiller without being afraid of owning a bad translation... but that's all. German is an awful language (ask Twain about it :) ))

No. I am proud of my accomplishments, not what I was born into, so, no I don't derive much pride from it. Just like I'm proud of being openly gay and not living a lie, but not of being gay, per se. That would be as silly as me being proud of being white or green-eyed.

I'm form Canada so it should be obvious about wheather or not I am proud. Molson sells "Canadian" That say "I am Canadian". We can't get over ourselves. I like how on Wikipedia I clicked a link to Canadian Slang. The first four were slang for alcohol and there were several slangs for alcohol.

Proud to be an Australian? Yep. Seriously disappointed in my fellow citizens' choice of Prime Minister? Oh, yes.

While I loathe our current government and its shameless encouragement of greed and overconsumption, that's just a transient thing. I hope. Doesn't mean I'm ashamed to live here, just a bit frustrated with the current right-wing regime.

i adore my country
i come from the Arab League-EG.
we have a uniquue sense of humore, we stick to each other when we are facing troubles, and by we i mean the whole 30 members of the family.
we are also extreamly friendly. it also feals great knowing that you are a desendent of the great pharoes.
I also am very proud of my language, because arabic is spoken by over 300 million in the world (top 6), and is widly spoken by almost all muslims, and im proud that my region is the place where people effected the whole world, like, Abraham, Jesus, Mohamed, Salahdin, Sadat...
im also proud of the achievments my civilization has reached once, like the Science, Astronomy and Art in the pharoes times, and in the Arab Reinassance : the Invention of Sociology, Numerals, Algerbra, and Medical care, also the great improvment we added to geography, astrology, biology...
believe it or not , the first person who ever tried to fly was an arab, he literally stuck wings to his body and jumped off a clif, (hehehe, i can see why he isnt known hehe), ofcourse he died, but his name was Abu Firas.
and hell several more reasons...

I dont know why should you be ashamed of your countyr germany, its not like your from Cape Verde island or something, you should be proud of your country because of germany's great History - Economy - Army - Democracy - and very strange language!!!hehehe

I'm damn proud to be a Canadian. Wait I think damn proud is an understatement I'm f**king proud to be a Canadian though yes our military isn't the greatest (but it still is a force to fear [though not as much as other first world nations]), our government ain't the greatest (though I prefer having a liberal government than a conservitive one), and the beer sterotype is taken to far. But other than that I f**king love it here. Best place on Earth (for me)

Too much pride for being a citizen of a country is stupid, in my opinion. My motto is: I am a citizen of the world first and a citizen of the United States of America second.

Thats what all humans are looking for, something to make them feel good, make them feel happy. Make them forget about their pain, agony and suffering, Instead of looking inside themselfs and trying to figure out why they have their pain, agony and suffering.

people dont share the same religion, lifestyle, language, traditions, culture, interest everything...do i need 2 say more.

Example......

Russian Federation.
population-over 130 million
Language - Russian
Ethnicity - Slavics
Religion - Chritianity
Favorite Drink VODKA
Favorite Sport Hand Ball (i guess)
its ok to site with leg over the other

Arab League Population- Over 300 million
Language - Arabic
Ethnicity - Arabs
Religion - Islam
Favorite Drink COFFE
Favorite Sport Football (Soccer)
very rude to site with leg over the other

People's Republic of China Population- Over 1,200 million
Language - Mandarin Chinese
Ethnicity - Han Chinese
Religion - Buddhism, Confucianism, Taosim, others
Favorite Drink GREEN TEA
Favorite Sport have no idea
people dont know how to site with leg over another

what im trying to say is that humans are all humans ofcourse, and can all easily live with each other but maybe 10,000 years ago...
now a chinese guy and an arab and a russian cant all live together under one roof... well they can but if you get the whole population , i think its hard.

do i make sense???

Well, I was born in Scotland and been moved to England, and my mum is 1/2 English and 1/2 Scottish but born in England. My dad is totally English. I have trouble working out what nationality I am, let alone whether I'm proud of it. It's pretty annoying when the English say I can't support England and Scots say I can't support Scotland.

Personally, I'm not particularly patriotic. I can't see what difference it would have made if I was born in France, Germany or whatever. I'd still be a four-eyed spotty teenager :D.

Which is why I want to emigrate after I go to uni and do my training as a Doctor. So I can be a foreigner in a different country, as opposed to in my own country, whichever it is.

Well, I like being from where I am, even it's called Spain for some, or Castille for some others.

When a place that has been the last corner of the world for centuries has been visited by ALL european and mid-east cultures, maybe it is for something. I like the history, we were full of gold mines, and all rich romans wanted to improve their social status by buying or building a mine here. We have a mercury mine which is the origin of 1/3 of all the mercury in the world, we are seen as the farm of Europe -vegetables, fruits, meal- is the best with the french and italian cuisines. The basque tradition on cooking is as famous as the french one.

And all americans who like their country as it is should thank it to us; if we hadn't existed today the whole continent would be muslim or a chinese ex-colony.

I'm proud of my country. I'm from Croatia. I'm proud of croatian history (somewhat unlucky), I'm proud of our people, of croatian landscapes, of our temper and attitude (it's like, first fun, then everything else). I'm also proud of our succeses in sports (third in soccer WC in France '98, first in handball WC and EC, waterpolo semifinalist, Janica Kostelic in Ski Cup, Goran Ivanisevic in Wimbeldon and in Athens, basketball second place vs USA Dream Team, ...), I'm proud of our sea :).

Well, enough of I'm proud of :D.
But I like the most is our attitude and temper (I'm not sure what is the right word in english, I want to say a word for how people behave in everyday life :)). It's pretty different to western way of life, here almost everybody is friendly, want to have fun, wants to get drunk :), we feel strong patriotism for Croatia, mostly because Croatia was not independent for 889 years so now when it is we are very patriotic :).

Probably people who live in countries that are independent for hundreds of years, that are very large or powerful so that they meddle in other countries affairs aren't proud of their country. They think that acomplishments of their country is nothing special. Newly independent countries are different :).

I think I've said enough.
