Just a thought...

If every single Iraqi turned insurgent, took to the streets with pitchforks and torches, aiming to drive out all foreigners....what would the excuse for occupation then be? Liberation of the oppressed?

If it was only half the nation? Only 10%? Only the shiites, sunnis or kurds?

It worked for Europe in Africa for a while.

those were the days. now, I wonder what the outcome of a Gallup survey in Iraq would be, if the question asked was: "should the foreigners leave now?"

Even better, what if Alabamanians decided they wanted independence NOW? Could they? Or would it be another Checnya? (however it is spelled)

better to ask this question to the 80% of the country who are kurds and shi'a:

Would you feel safe without American troops here to protect you from the Sunni terrorists/insurgents?

i would imagine that a small percentage of shi'a and kurds and maybe half of the sunnis don't want us there... so maybe 15% overall.

They did show up to vote.

Their government is in the process of drafting a constitution, which, without the help of the US to knock off Saddam and continue to fight the nut-job insurgents who don't want to lose their stranglehold on power... would not have been possible. I would imagine most Iraqis, in their heart of hearts, realize how much we've done for them, how much gratitude we're owed.

Who needs Alabama? Besides we'll just get a bunch of Texans and keep 'em down.

If Texas wanted out instead?

If Texas wanted out instead?

The USA could easily afford to lose quite a few states. But what - consider its economic power as the fifth most powerful ecomony in the world - what if California decided to leave? Do you honestly think there wouldn't be a war to regain control of it, or at the very least install a puppet government?

Well we would be rid of Bush in that case now wouldn't we... Anyway, Texans have to much patriotism.

I don't know for sure, but I think secession is illegal now. Plus, there's too many incentives to remain in the US than to break away...those trillions of federal dollars being one of many.

Secession is illegal. We'd fight anyway to get any state back. Recall the Civil War?

Secession is illegal? Well, blimey, I was led to believe the USA was about people's freedom to do what they wanted. Seriously, what if the Californian people held a referendum and decided they'd be better off on their own?

Surely those federal dollars are not of federal origin? Some state produced them, is having them federalized and given to other states...why do they put up with it? How about some tax-evading state like Lasvegasland??

The Constitution neither forbids nor specifically allows secession, and in technicality only the states that actually ratified it as per Article VII.

Plus, it would require at least a supermajority; I don't think winning 50.1% to 49.9 is a mandate for independence.

I guess if Wales and Scotland decided to seperate your government wouldn't care.

The Congress has the power to levy taxes and direct spending, so they have to put up with the decisions of the Congress.

Also, it seems the more tax you pay, the less you get in return.

We don't and we won't.

A fine answer to a "what if" question! What productive logic, brick-sound argument!

Q: What if?
A:Never!
