Which is the greatest city in Europe, and why?

London, vibrent, exciting chaotic...unlike Paris which is just a Museum piece...I could actually live in London.

After that Maybe Berlin, Germany's finest city and getting better and better all the time. Much better than Munich.

I think I'm just against cities where everything is so tightly controled and organised...like a prision. Berlin and London feel free and alive. Paris and Munich feel dead.

Prague or Vienna. Both have been through so much history, and it can be felt in both. And yet both are modern and alive...

Which is the greatest city in Europe, and why?

I have not been in many of these cities, and in general I don't like big cities. But Vienna is a very nice place with much athmosphere, and Rome is one of the places I want to travel to.

Of course I should vote for Berlin, but sorry, I dislike Berlin very much... from the German bigger cities I prefer Nürnberg (Nuremberg), although (or because *g*) it's not as big as Hamburg, Munich or Frankfurt.

London of course because it's where I live.

Then Rome follows a close second because it is the heart of the Catholic Church.

Stockholm is the most beautiful, and London is probably the most interesting. Mind you, I have not been to most of these cities on the poll.

Belfast, duh. we'e got everything including intresting tribal vendettas and bizare murals. actually Belfast is alright once you get used to the fact that there's some places you just dont realli want 2 go (shankill, falls, etc.), Though i'm slightly confused why u dont have Dublin, its a cool city and its got Crooke Park.Which is a great stadium.

I don't like cities too much, but I've got some favourites. Note that these are all my opinions:

Helsinki - It's the most beautiful city that I've visited.

Trondheim - Medieval is nice.

Oslo - International feeling.

Krakow - I don't know. I just thought it was pretty cool.

Warsaw - The palace of culture and science. Awesome.

Vyborg - CDs! DVDs! Everything cheap!!!

for what it's worth, i've been to Paris, Rome and Prague

of the three, here's what i valued at each place:

Paris - architecture/sculptures

Rome - ancient architecture, food, feeling of history

Prague - A city coming alive (you can feel it, or at least I could) with financial freedom; damn cobblestone sidewalks ruining my NICE BASS SHOES (bring athletic shoes to Prague!) -- a love/hate thing, since the sidewalks do look nice; sense of being in a place that's been conquered many, many, many times over the past 2000 years or so... and the incredible feeling of ancient history.

Oh yes, the French revolution was sooooo big admirable thing... poor Paris if it would have only the place of the Guillotine...

London, as I know, was not involved in the 100 years war.

Rome - if you're interested in history, you MUST go there, indeed!

Of course all these places are interesting for historians. But Rome I think can't be topped.

Oh, they all have. Europe is living and breathing history, whereever you look. But the atmosphere in those two cities make you feel those ages more than most other places. I couldn't say why... Maybe because the history is so alive in the people there.
Unlike Paris, London or Rome, both cities have been put to the back of the international stage some decades ago and they somehow started to meditate their past rather than their present.

Moscow because it's full of commis (I'm not talking about Soviets I'm talking about the Communist Party of the Russian Federation), it's a beautiful city because of its churches and the Kremlin, it's full of history, it's modern, the most cosmopolitan city in Eastern Europe, the people are nice, funny, and the girls are gorgeous.

rome .... well we all know that it is probably the oldest in europe.

Whatever it's undoubted charms, Rome's nowhere near the oldest city in Europe. Archaeologically speaking, it's arguably not even the oldest city in modern Italy.

Quite apart from what our Greek friends might say over Rome's claim to antiquity, Spaniards would make a strong claim for Cadiz. And Sofia, Bulgaria often claims to be the 'second-oldest city in Europe'.

Anyway, a small sample of favourite European cities of mine that aren't listed on the poll...

Edinburgh
York
St. Davids (smallest city in the UK!)
Brussels/Bruxelles/Brussel
Istanbul
Athens
Venice (despite its near-museum status)
Ravenna
Sighisoara (Romania)

And though I haven't visited myself, I'm surprised no one's made a claim for St. Petersburg.

But of the ones listed (of which Warsaw's the only one I haven't been to), I' m going to go for Prague in a photo-finish over London.
Moscovy
30-08-2005, 05:07
I was just about to make my claim for St. Petersburg. It is where I am from so I have to make it known

It beats Moscow hands down. When you are in the middle of St. Petersburg you know you are in the middle of the Imperial capital. You know you are in something that is bigger than yourself, and unlike Moscow, it has class.
You have the Hermitage, the Admirality, Petrodevets, and the Vasilevsky Island. If you are tired of the city there is always a place to screw around on Lake Ladoga (providing its actually not colder than all holy hell).

Its like a Northern Venice, but its far from a museum peice and a tourist trap.

Madrid is the best. Why? For its Everything.

Better weather than in London, Paris, Berlin, etc.etc.etc.

Of course better meal than in London, Berlin, etc. If better than Paris, I don't know, but at least we've got REAL ham, and they don't.

This city is cheaper than all the cities listed, maybe only Warsaw is cheaper. But they don't have this weather.

The people. You won't be never shamed for being born in London, Missouri, Dax, Addis Ababa, Hong Kong or Alcala de Henares. And people will try to help you whenever and whatever you ask.

The transport. Our subway is one of the 5 best in the world.

I've asked through the net some people, and they always say the same: "Really better of what I expected".

Without a doubt, having been to 3/4 of the cities on that list, even if for only a few days, Paris.

Imagine Manhattan, minus the live to work or ghetto "thugz" mentally, plus true culture and history.

Paris has some of everything - a strong commercial center, theatre, nightlife, landmarks, and incredible amounts of history. Also, someone mentioned the economy of London as being the greatest in Europe. Well, if you look at all of London, with some 7.4 million people with a GDP of 236.2 billion, and metropolitan Paris' (not counting the 10 million in surrounding suburbs and satellite cities) 2.2 million people with a GDP of 131.9, Paris proper makes far more per capita. ...and the food is way better, too.
