A mere thought...

Well I'm quite sick of hearing everyone use France's participation of our Revolutionary War over 200 years ago and cover their ears when I tell them that we helped free their country from the Germans only 60 years ago. Well anyway...

What if France never helped the U.S. out?

Apparently, if we stayed a British colony, we would've ended up to be some kind of peaceful nation like Canada.

And apparently Canada isn't as hated as the U.S.

So shouldn't it be a NEGATIVE thing that France aided our war only to get back at the British? ;)

Half-joking thread here. Speculations and all doesn't mean it's fact.

Well, I don't think it can be said that Canada is less hated because it is a member of the British Commonwealth. Rather, it is because Canadians tend to take a backseat, to let Americans jump up and make a fool of themselves. ;)

No shortage of opportunities there. I live in the US but our best radio station here comes out of Toronto. They love to laugh at the US and especially Bush. I laugh along with them...then sigh...

If France had never helped the colonies against the British then Spain would have.

Spain did help by attacking Florida whilst we were busy fighting in California and other places across the globe

Or Russia, maybe? That was about the time they became interested in Alaska.

Now that would be interesting. :p

Hmm....

Refuse the French' aid...become like Canada.

OR

Accept their aid, beat the Brits...become most hated nation 200 years later.

Sounds like a fun episode of Quantum Leap.

Russia was too far away and didn't have the naval strength to stand up to Britain.

That's because we northern countries know that all a submarine is really good for is to go around and around the water park at the Mall.

...and save the world.

er, rather, to use the words of our great Democrat president Woodrow Wilson, "..to make the world safe for democracy."

A simple solution: stop bringing that irrelevance up. The US of today is not the US of then, and neither is France. The "we helped liberate you" from both camps is pretty much outdated pointlessness.

There's a handful of North American countries. One of them is substantially more influential than all the others in the region combined. No one gets confused when you refer to USA as "America". They'll know who you are talking about.

Hey, that's why if you have something that says "Made in America" you need to be a bit suspicious. You're being misled!
