Everything was just fine and dandy until France spoke out against the Iraq war in 2003. It is remarkable to think how good relations were beforehand, with the French and the US fighting alongside each other against Iraq in 1991 and Serbia in 1999.
And then one little act of independent thought ruined it all.

Actually, initially they bashed Germany as well, but they were less of a target because they had no veto. Plus it didn't really catch on with the American people for some reason.

That's why I started this thread. How can the americans bash in this way an ally, but don't say anything about, for example Germany or Russia; which are not so allied but against war anyways.

I'm English and as such I have a built in hatred towards France. We've been at each other's throats for just under a millenium, so it's kind of instinctive.
I'm an American, and I think France is great. They're our oldest allies, and without their help during the war for Independence, we might still be under British rule. A lot of people seem to hate the French because they try to stay out of major conflicts, but so do most other countries. As for rudeness, well, I visited France a few years back and they were some of the nicest people I've met.

It's NOT instinct!
Instinct in inbuilt from when your a fetus, things like the need to eat, sleep, breath, defend your life and pro create.
Those in England that hate the French are just ignorant of history, narrow minded and stupid enough to have their minds warped by various other anti French elements who use people's bigotry for their own agenda's.
Im English yet I have RARELY come across anyone with anti French views.
The French are way ahead in working conditions and healthcare/social services so I have no idea where the bigots get their idea that England comes out on top of the French or any other nation for that matter.
Well, I am french and i think the reason why US hate France is that... we hate them too! this is jealousy, and just a different way to see things; being very far, the contacts are rare. we dont know each other well, and the stereotypes we have are appaling.
many French people hate America as a lifestyle: they'd never go to a Mc Donalds or dare to laugh at a stupid US movie, though they adore Woody Allens and so on... snob people for some of them ;)

I never said anything about the EU or Spain. It's just that England has had many wars with France (and almost everyone else), and there is a rivalry between the two nations. The feeling is reiterated in France too. I should know cause I've visited quite a few times.

I'm a New Zealander but have partly inherited this from my English parents. However I just take it as a joke. I think it's ridiculous when people take this kind of historical rivalry seriously. Although the French did commit an act of terrorism against the Rainbow Warrior here in NZ, then bullied us into sending the bombers back to France were they were quickly released...

Have any of you bashers even visited France? If so, I don't know where you went, but I stayed in Alsace during autumn. It's absolutely beautiful, and very peaceful. Vineyards, wine harvests, festivals. There are mountain meadows, ancient forests, and great hiking trails. You have the museums of Mulhouse, medieval villages and 18th century towns, chateaus, and of course the Maginot Line of WWII. The people were so friendly to visitors too, it was a totally unique experience.
P.S. The wine there is the best I've ever tasted. ;)

Yeah, don't kill my thread.
Let's keep discusing.
France and England have fought for centuries. France was the main enemy of Spain, first while they were a kingdom and they took what today are the spanish Navarra and Cataluña; second, for our fights in Italy; third, for our succesion war: French bourbons vs. Austrian habsbourgs; fourth, for their napoleonic invasion; fifth, for their way to talk to us in the post-franquism; sixth, for their farmers knocking all our fruits over in the border with the connivency of the french policemen, while our farmers threw away the vegetables in some "Carrefour" malls.
And, after all, we are allies.
So that's why I couldn't see the point in the US-France rivalry...

As an Irish person the first thing my French teacher taught us so if we were ever in France and had to ask someone if they spoke english was:
Je suis Irlandais
Parlez vous anglais
He said if you left out the first part they wouldn't talk to you.
The funny thing is it's worked like a dream, they love us!
But if they hear you speaking english and you don't let them know.... Yipes!
The reason the French are hated in America is because they proved an obstacle to America's oil-thirsty ambitions until America decided it didn't think international laws were worth wiping its arse on.

I have to admit I can figure out why a country that get beaten in two wars and whose best troops are foriegners are on the security council. Piut Australia on it. 40% of the woprld's Uranium, german and VC veterans are still scared of Australian troops, and the SAS make Delta Force look like pansies.

I'm sick of the moronic France bashing. If it wasn't for France's help in the Revloutionary war... THERE WOULDN'T BE A FREAKING UNITED STATES!!!
I think the leaders don't like France because their government is part Socialist. Same why that idiot religious ass hates the leader of in Venesulua. Him and his government doesn't kiss Corperations asses.
I know little about the history of France, I know little about the people. As an American I've heard the jokes and all that but really I can't say anything because I've never seen/been in France.
However, I have heard stories of Americans who go there and are spit on for being Americans. That and when the WWII memorial was defiled by French protestors who opposed the War in Iraq.
To hate an entire nation for the action of a few is the kind of ignorance that makes me ashamed to be human. I cannot nor do I want to hate France.

I always wonder where the 'mean' French are. I've been there maybe 6-7 times and travelled all over the country and I have yet to find anyone who is mean, impolite, nasty, etc. But I have the same reaction to Germany, Mexico, Canada, and any of the dozens of other countries I've been to.
Dare I say, the 'meanness' of the French is probably in the eye of the beholder. Anyway, any country that can create such superior cheeses, wines, etc. must be one of the sacred places on this planet. :)

When I think "arrogant Frenchman" I see a snooty looking, well dressed fellow with a cigarette and three-day stubble.
When I think "arrogant American" I see a fat man dressed like that guy from "Dallas" and a used-car-salesman smile.
When I think "arrogant Englishman" I see a cross between Monty Python's Flying Circus, Winston Churchill, and The Sex Pistols.
And when I think "arrogant Canadian"...I'm probably looking in the mirror, anyway.

I don't hate France.
I sort of pity them.
In my experience there isn't a nation out there with more puffed up self-importance for less reason than France.
They seem to think that their cultural richness (which no one will argue) gives them some sort of mythical intellectual, creative and moral superiority. When, in fact, to people with different values (like America) it just makes them look like well dressed, well manicured buffoons.
I think the real difference is that America, for better or worse, is defined more by its lower classes (pioneers, cowboys, working stiffs) and France defines itself by its "high class". In that sort of situation, BOTH countries have contempt for the other.
Oh... and for those bringing up the revolution...
France wouldn't have a country if it weren't for the Americans and the Allies. Twice.
Not to mention the fact that the French Revolution might never have happened if ours hadn't been successful.

Here's a god reason, but you have to go back a few decades.
There are graves of american soldiers in many countries in Europe, but how many are there in france? None.
One of the things that americans asked for after WWII is permission to bury our fallen in the country that they fought for and died in. Many of those brave men who died during the D-Day invasion where buried in france, and less than a decade later those graves where descrated. Vandalism and graffitti reading "Take your trash home" and "Stop polluting our soil" wrote on the tombs.
I remember those who went before me, and it will take at least another 50 years before such a blatnent slap in the face can be forgiven.

I am completely  .
I imagine thate hate is rooted in teh fact that Chirac is a Degaulist and as such pits himself against America as he tries to make France the power which pushes against the only super power.. this coupled with the fact that France no longer enjoys the sway or prominence it once did and is effectivly an antiquted power.
This is no more evident then its complete failure with the EU... as it pushes so hard for further intergration and it fails to pass the EU constitution it so desperatly wanted.
