Another Perspective on the Sheehan Debacle

Before you read this post, read my sig. You'll understand that I'm pretty damn liberal for the American spectrum, and probably fairly moderately liberal on the European one.

Thus, it might be a bit surprising when I say Cindy Sheehan needs to stop.

It's not that I like Bush or approve of the way he handled the war. The President needs to run the country - spending hours justifying himself to various random citizens would probably cause more soldiers to die. The President needs to spend time figuring out a way to follow Colin Powell's Pottery Barn rule rather than rehash the past.

This would all be moot, however, if I though Cindy Sheehan wanted to start a revolutionary movement. A demand for a personal meeting with the President, if handled correctly, could be a powerful impetus for a revolution in the United States. And that would be brilliant political strategy. But guess what? I don't think that's what she's after, given the way she's structured her press releases and public appearances. I think all she genuinely wants is a chance to rant at the President. And I'm sorry for her loss (and I'd like a crack at Bush myself), but I'd rather more people didn't have to die for personal grievances.

What's stupid is her opponents making such a big deal out of it. Seriously, just ignore her. Like her or not, if no one showed any interest it would have survived on the news for about 2 days before the whole thing died. Why bother legitimising her if you think she's that crazy?

I don't. I just think it's an interesting subject to discuss. Notice how I didn't get all angry and grumpy about it and call her a traitor and so on. That's counterproductive, to say the least.

That's true. I'm just amazed at how worked up people have got about it. Eutrusca has posted a lot on it. Ignoring a problem can make it go away, especially when its media driven and the media relies on people watching/reading/listening to it.

I could frankly care less about this Sheehan woman, and I'm getting tired of hearing her name. I'm not completely aware of the situation, and I'm not really interested enough to care.

Still, if she gets a chance to yell at Bush, I should get one too. I'm damn sure I'd do a better job of it.

I haven't discussed it much, so I'm curious to see what people have to say. I suspect I'll be as jaded as you are shortly.

See, I agree. And that's the problem. If she gets to yell at Bush, then we all do. And that seriously fucks with the functioning of the political system.

This is just like Terry Schiavo, it's none of our business, yet we debate the hell out of it.

Yeah. These things have a way of becoming overblown.

Well, I'd tend to think that if this were the biggest problem when it comes to the functioning of the political system, we'd be in smooth seas. :p

I try to conserve my energy by simply staying angry at the larger issues. That said, I certainly hope this doesn't become one of them.

1900 American troops have died in Iraq, so I would say that this is a huge issue.

The problem is that the media has turned this into a debate about one woman and one son.

I dislike Cindy's protest too, as she's advocating the immediate bringing home of the troops, which is completely retarded and irresponisble. If she was demanding the full truth from the Bush Administration as to why we invaded Iraq, then I might be supporting her, but that's not really her objective.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you really support the troops, you'd demand to know why they are being sent into harms way. And the reasons we've been given are far from adequate.
