NCAA and team names, PC carried to far?

In light of the NCAA's recent issues with the Seminoles and 17 other Native American team names throughout college sports, I'd like to ask on a case by case basis, which of the following "ethinic" related team names you think should be banned (fact/fictional case mix, some proffesional teams as well)

Seminoles (supported by both surviving Seminole groups)
Aztecs (no surviving groups identified, not on NCAA watch list)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Mississippi Rebels
Boston Celtics
NY Yankees
Spartans
Trojans (both common names)
Arapaho (lets say some surviving groups support it, not all)
Mayans (say no surviving groups support it)
Indians (meaning Native Americans, not inhabitants of the Indian sub continent)
Redskins
Hoplites
Leigonairres
New England Patriots
Redcoats
Cheese eating surrender monkeys

I personally think names designed as slurs (redskins, surrender monkeys) should not be allowed, but the rest should.

How are the Patriots an "ethnic" name?

Other than the Cheese Eating Surrender Monkeys, who as an ethnic group have declined to comment, I believe most of the ethnic groups that have their names in the names of college teams either don't care or don't mind.

I think this is way overboard on the PC side.

Next we won't be able to see the Duke Blue Devils play because it offends the religious...or the Buffalo Sabres because they are named after a violent weapon.

People need to loosen up.

I wondered the same thing.

I also think that the New York Yankees should not be allowed to have that name. Nor should they be allowed to play. We shouldn't let the spawn of Satan defile baseball!

Well, the Patriots could offend those who think the American Revolution was an unjust war and think we should still be British. Trust me these people exist.

Political Correctness gone awry. I happen to live in Seminole, Oklahoma...so our team's names happen to be two of the team names mentioned above. Doubt they're related, just coinsidence. "Seminole's" and "Trojans."

If you ask me, the Team Names are meant to instill some sort of a "Heritage" for the team-members to put themselves into, to give them a certain sence of pride. If someone feels insulted by the idea, they don't have to watch the sport.

On the other hand, I could see such actions being warranted, if team names were along the lines of:

"****** Hating 'Coon Hunters."

Truly, if someone is going to make an issue out of ethnic names being used in team sports; they should also make one out of indian names being used on Military Helicopters.

I have a very good friend, maybe my best friend, who is part seminole, and origionally lived in the area around Florida State. He tells me how the Florida State Seminoles pay tribute to the Seminole tribe with their name. This is a tribe deeply rooted in the community around the campus, and they are proud of their association with Florida State. This is one reason why they have joined with Florida State in their lawsuit against the NCAA.

It's funny that according to the Orlando Sentinel, the NCAA yielded to pressure in this waiver. I guess you just can't please everyone and PC won't please anyone.
