I've been on Fools Paradise mainly, with a bunch of other ex-NS members. And then in real life I passed some exams and got accepted to university. And I've been working on this book thing for a bit.

I graduated, but my life hasn't changed much at all. The posters they sold in my childhood lied, it seems. They implied that I could redeem my college degree for garage's full of Ferraris, Porsches, Mercedes, and Lamborghinis and chicks in bikinis who for some reason are in heels.

Stupid posters. Who knew they could lie? I bet that cat freakin' loves Mondays...

At least the poster you saw was only for a college degree. I knew a friend who was of the highly suggestable type, and the first poster he saw was for the French Foreign Legion.

Let me tell you, that one did not go smoothly.

Congrats. I got married...and divorced...have a new girl I've been talking to for a while now, but we're both pretty busy and I work an odd schedule, so it can make for a rough time. I'm still in the AF - was going to get out early but they decided to promote me to Staff Sgt...so, I figured that if they're gonna gimme a stripe, I might as well take it, right?

Thinking about purchasing a bike since a couple of my good friends here ride and I cant hardly afford $75+ a week in gas for the truck...Not that my ex-wife or the girl I'm talking with now want me to get one...lol

Basicly, golden era of NS: August 2003. Everyone knew everyone else, the server was up... maybe 75% of the time, but still. 2,000 posts was enough to mark you out as a fairly major poster, there was the volcano club, only a very tiny majority of threads resulted in someone being called a troll and they almost always deserved it (unlike how it got later on, jesus), there were at any given time at least a half dozen threads that weren't about Bush, Creationism, abortion or Iraq, and the worst mod oppression was handed down by Neut for gods sakes. Simply put, it was a really wicked time to be here, and people who remember it remember it very fondly, and now a decent sized percentage of us can't stand the fucking place. You've gotta understand that we basicly built the General forum our way that long summer, and a lot of us are all pretty sad that it couldn't stay the way it was. I don't have anything against the new NS, except that it's really not my bag anymore.

Now not to be a **** or anything, but you're the first person here who really made a big deal about whole 03/04 split, and in a pretty bloody bitchy way to be sure. I only came back here to see if I could find some old friends, not as a snub to you or a personal attack on your join date. So if you could maybe try adopt the ostrich position to threads that annoy you rather than trying to tear a new one into anyone who'll give you the time to do it, that'd be real sweet of you.

That's exactly it. Like back then, even if you didn't agree with someone about their politics or what have you, you still talked to them. You'd have as much fun with the nazis as the people who agreed with you, and even when it turned nasty it wasn't evil.

I agree with ya on the first paragraph, Spoffin. Even the Nazis and Anti-Nazis were still able to bullshit and laugh with each other on the joke / spam threads. And this is where the forums went to hell...people like this guy that cant just ENJOY A THREAD or simply ignore one that he doesnt agree with.

I agree with ya on the first paragraph, Spoffin. Even the Nazis and Anti-Nazis were still able to bullshit and laugh with each other on the joke / spam threads. Nowadays, even the damn joke threads turn into fucking debates. I mean...c'mon...what happened to having fun? When did General get so goddamn serious?
I put it down to the time when Eridanus changed his sig from that freaky Ozzy Osbourne pic. But that's just me.

I think maybe actually it was while the servers were dodgy, but not quite down all the time. I think when you get so pissed off at 5 minute page loading times, that has to reflect in the anger of your posts. Also chat and socialising becomes impossible when its running like that, whereas with debate you can just post, leave for a bit, let someone respond, flame them for their dumbass ideas, leave for a bit, etc etc

I think a lot of it has to do with the Mod curtailing all the spam...that was what made General General...now people dont know how to spam in General anymore - and the few that do are afraid of getting in trouble or having a thread shut down for it...

Yeah, I'd forgotten about that. It was another server-related thing, wasn't it? I mean, some of the spam was truly out of control, but without it, yeah, I think everyone just got a bit... whatever

Now not to be a **** or anything, but you're the first person here who really made a big deal about whole 03/04 split, and in a pretty bloody bitchy way to be sure. I only came back here to see if I could find some old friends, not as a snub to you or a personal attack on your join date. So if you could maybe try adopt the ostrich position to threads that annoy you rather than trying to tear a new one into anyone who'll give you the time to do it, that'd be real sweet of you.I wasn't trying to be rude; sorry if it came across that way. I appreciate the explanations though, because up to now I frankly haven't understood the difference between how general used to be and how it is now. I always assumed it was primarily a political forum. Anyway, I didn't mean to be bitchy. Cheers to you and the rest of the old-timers....for the most part, I like reading y'alls nostalgia (and other posts).

General used to be the only non-political or RP forum around...now that's all that's left...it sucks...

I don't think it sucks at all! but then again, its been more or less this way since I joined. How are +1 threads preferable to the mix there is now?

They wound up being much more fun than the stuff that goes on now. It's rare to find a thread nowadays that's just pure fun...most of them develop into some kind of debate or discussion or something...

That's alright, its not easy to understand if you don't know. Its also worth mentioning that there has always been a join date or postcount based discrimination, its just that where the line for that is keeps moving. General did always have some political threads, but I remember it being more or less a 50-50 split, politics on one side, then chat, spam, non-political discussions and stuff on the other.

I'll tell you what I'm remembering now, I'm remembering the names that Generalites used to get called by the RPers. I remember the forum being referred to as the Cesspool of NationStates, and I remember having to yell at the mods from the NS and II forums cos they kept moving OMG!!shift1!! threads into General. "General is not your trashcan!"

I have very fond memories of summer/autumn 2003. Those were the best days of General. :(

The spam had to go however, and at the time it was only the nubs that were posting it. But it seemed as though as soon as the crackdown on spam began, all the serious people started getting into it. And once the general forum royalty and the spammers merged into one community, it was obvious what would happen, they suffered for it, and ended up leaving in droves. This was personally frustrating for me, because a lot of people with whom I chatted so long in all those social threads, started doing stuff which I detested, and got warned, deleted, banned, etc. One time I left for a week and came back to find a friend's nation dead, and asked her WTF, and she said she went on a flaming rampage because she was bored and wanted some fun.

Not surprisingly, I lost a lot of friends, being on the anti-spam side, but what can you do when confronted with that attitude? When one day people are content to chat in a hug store and go to an RP ball, and then they're postwhoring and spamming porn.

I think the community burned itself out from the inside, it wasn't destroyed the way some people think. Such a shame. But it was great fun while it lasted. :(

Here is a serious question: What is it like being an ex-mod? Do you feel blinded, or do you get secret info from the current mods?

And what do you do about players you know have puppets &ct. in general.

It's hard to explain, or even think about it. Its like, its not about the spam, but what comes between the spam. Its about personalities of the people. Like there's the person who'll posts "+1" and then the person who'll *streaks the thread*, and then the person who *films it*, and there's something about that that just... I dunno, it really is hard to explain. Its the atmosphere, or something. Like at a party, imagine if the only people there were the ones who did something. The person who you get off with, the person who throws up on the stairs and the person who moons through the upstairs window are all there, but no-one else it. It wouldn't really work right, would it? Its about the people who stand off to the side a bit as well, just drinking and rocking out to the music or whatever. Its kindof like that.

I think everything sorta went wrong together. I mean, obviously there's a tendancy for the mods to blame the players and the players to blame the mods, but they sorta bounce off of each other. The thing is that the mods were initally put there to stop the porn (and worse) from being posted, and then somewhere down the line it got a bit much for some people, so they started trying to brink the rules a bit, which obviously is only gonna mean that there's more modding, then more brinking, and so on. I don't think anyone would deny that these days people get the gort for far less than they would've had to a year and a half ago.

oh i dunno - i may not have been here back in 03 but for me the golden years were december 04 to feb 05-ish, when tink, TIN, moley, peechie, oxana and many others got away with plenty of spam, seemingly as long as we kept it to one thread (or so). remember all of TIN's oh-so random threads? :p
it was when tink and i got e-married and there were plenty spammy threads about then... (as well as lots of those personality contests - for better or worse). so, for a short time it was like the (awesome sounding) community of '03 you've described :)

but things are way serious now, i'll agree - and thats not even compared to the old timers time...

Not being around in mid-'03 either, I agree. We could have our little social conversations and not get in trouble, and if you got sick of arguing with people, you could start a fun thread. Now it's different.

precisely... a semi-golden time where to mods tolerated stupid threads and there were enough spamtastic people around to make it fun (edit: is tink even still here - i haven't seen her around for days... again :()
the social aspect of the forum was just great :)
still is, but its all in a much more serious envrionment now...

As mentioned in Sdaeriji's sig :)

At any given time, there are usually only 6-7 threads that I've bothered to even look at, and that goes down to 3-4 that I'll look at a second time. Even then there's only a few I end up posting in. I try and crack jokes here and there, but there are so many people who seem to be utterly humourless. My posts per day has droped off a lot, but I can't seem to get away.
