Do you know, have you meet, have you seen?

Have you ever crossed paths with a celebrity or someone famous? Who do you know that's of interest? Under what circumstances did you meet?

Personally, I worked at a book store which Charles Schultz (Author of the comic strip "Peanuts") frequented before he died. He claimed that he continued to do all of his own comics right up until he died, but I am personally suspicious of this assertion because he never seemed to be able to hold his pen steady, as evidenced by the irregular signature he always left on his credit card endorsements.

I've also greeted Pat Robertson on three occasions and conversed with him once. In my 5 minute conversation with him, he asked me about why I was in law school (which I was at the time) and the conversation somehow turned to what Christmas was like in our households.

Those are my two really big ones, but I've met/seen plenty of semi-famous people who didn't make enough of an impression on me to list. :) How about you folks?

Let's see....

I got to meet Mitch Hedburg and Steven Lynch after a show and talk to them ("talk to them" is pretty relative, because they were completely wasted) for about 10 minutes before they had to go do the autograph thing for the crowd.

I got to meet Stone Temple Pilots and 311 briefly because they came to my school and I was a volunteer at the show. (I could have met 50 cent, Tori Amos, and a whole slew of other artists this way as well, but I never bothered volunteering for any other events)

A friend of a friend introduced me and my buddy to Michelle Branch at one of her shows once because she and the friend of a friend had gone to high school together. She's a bitch, by the way.

I was there at a club when a friend of mine tried to hit on Julia Stiles and struck out hard. That's not really meeting her, but I still count it.

When I was younger, I got a hat signed by Andre Reed, a wide reciever for the Buffalo Bills. Not sure if that counts.

I went to school with Marc Orrell, who is guitarist for the Dropkick Murphys, so I've met them numerous times.

That's all, as far as I'm aware of.

edit: Oh, I forgot one. I once stood about 10 feet away from that Fred Phelps assclown and called him some unkind names. Does that count?

Met Princess Diana on a few occasions and went to Billy Joels house when I was in the States. Also met Bradley Walsh when I was down in the Falklands in '93 (used my room to get changed after he'd had a shower) and talked about football ... nice bloke . :)

I met Branford Marsalis twice, and the first time he said, "I remember you." (No man, you saw me waiting outside for your show. But I did meet your band in an elevator before. But thanks for pretending I was somebody.) He was cool, and he talked to me over all the label people because I have a feeling he couldn't stand them.

I met Tony Bennet, he shakes hands like a gangster.

I talk Lawernce Tresvant out of buying The Crow on laserdisc.

I grew up on the track with Jeff Gordon. He left at the age of 12 or 11 or something to Indiana so he could move up to big cars earlier. I, uh, rode my bike a lot and rented movies at the video store in my nieghborhood...aaaaaanyway...

I spent the day with Cornilius Bumpus and Bobby McFarren. Bobby's kids are crazy talented. Suprise.

Garrison Keiler asked me to get out of his way. He's like ten feet tall...

Bobby Rahal was mildly annoyed at my presence. (Though I think he was really angry at the Mercedes engine that wasn't doing what he wanted it to do...)

I saw the top of Kurt Vonnegut's head bounce while he talked.

Allen Ginsberg talked to me about recording with Phillip Glass.

Neil Gaiman talked to me about Seasons of Mist.

Terrance Blanchard told me a story about playing with Art Blakey.

Bill Pierce did the same thing after grunting, "Hey, you play. C'mon over here." in the lobby of a Tony Williams concert.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head right now. Pretty b-list, but I dig most of those cats, so I'm happy with it.

Mitch Hedburg and Steven Lynch were pretty awesome, and so was STP. 311 looked like they couldn't be bothered with us, and Michelle Branch was just mean. I'd rather meet not-so-famous celebrities who actually treated me like a human being than huge mega-stars that looked down upon me.

I have been fortunate enough to cross paths with a few celebs( mostly politicians).

I took part in a discussion about sex with Dr. Ruth last December. I got to go backstage at a Martina McBride concert in Nashville and shook hands. I went to several political fundraisers for Al Gore Jr.'s 2000 presidential campaign, and oh yeah, and my folks and I went to lunch with Jim Wallis once. Those are all that come immediately to mind.

So, I am telling one of my friends about this thread, and they inform me that I once made out with a semi-famous girl, but I guess I was so loaded at the time that I don't remember at all. But they won't tell me who. They're just giving me hints....

Mitch Hedberg would have been cool to meet. My only Hedberg thing I have is that before he developed his cadence I saw him in a comedy compitition on Sacramento where he was, even without the cadance, far and away better than the other comics.

At the time, and this is how I remembered him when I eventually saw him on Comedy Central, I had a goatee, mustache, earing, ponytail and a hat. He made that joke then looked at me sideways and smiled.

I forgot my favorite-I met Alexander Payne right before Sideways came out where he sat in on my senior thesis screenwritting class and validated everything I had been saying and undermined everything that stupid teacher had been saying. She kept trying to get him to back her up and instead he would, unprompted, refute her with what I had been saying all quarter long. I'll take Oscar winner Payne over Zeotrope quarter finalist teacher, thank you very much.

Kinda petty, but man I hated her.

Kris Draper, the winner of the NHL's Most Defensive Offensive, used to go to my elementary school, and in grade 2 he visited my class. Also, when The Detroit Red Wins won the Stanley Cup, he brought the cup to his parent's house, where he let anyone visit it. I got my picture taken in front of the cup, and my dad was able to drink beer out of it. (a big thing for a Canadian :D)

I got to see John C. McGinley naked! That's the guy who plays Dr. Cox on the show Scrubs. And he was actually covered up with a sheet.

Actually it was quite innocent. He was shooting a movie in Seattle and was staying at the Four Seasons and asked for a referral to get a massage. He showed up at the day spa I worked at and I got him because I had an opening. He seemed like a nice guy, but he was very quiet, and I didn't try to get him to talk either, but it was also against policy at work to 'bug' the celebrities that came in. He's a good tipper.

I once stood waiting at the counter of 'The Sausage King' at the St. Lawrence Market in downtown Toronto on Saturday morning, when I realized the nervous-looking guy next to me was Roger Moore. Honestly, he looked like the last thing he wanted or needed was for some James Bond fan to hit him up for an autograph or a handshake, so I let him get his order of bangers (the Sausage King rules!) and split without drawing attention to him.

After all, Toronto has a rep for not hassling celebs - though that's changing year-by-year. Unfortunately. I like the idea that I'm not working, I'm not working - and I think it's unfair to the celebs for them to have to be... 'on', 24/7. So if and when I do see 'em on the street, as far as I'm concerned, they're like anyone who's not working... and it's not like I know them, or they owe me anything, so why bug 'em? Just let 'em be.

Kirstie Alley was my roommate in college (Kansas State University, 1969-1971). Sonny Bono was my first husband's cousin and a nice guy. Al Reynolds, old KC Chief player, worked on my Dad's farm on weekends and through the summer during high school and college. He and several of the other Chiefs often came out to our farm to hunt and clean out Mama's fridge. (Years later I ran into Jan Stenerud in a club. Not recognizing me in the grown up edition, he tried to pick me up, until I told him who I was.) I've run into Bill and Hillary Clinton and Bill's mother in several local events and establishments. I was also friends with then Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater's assistant-met Mr.Fitzwater in person, special tour of White House and sat in on a press conference 10 feet from President Regan. An hour later, came just as close to Vice President George H.Bush.

I met producer Desmond Childs, and spit my gum on comedienne Judy Tenuda, then shared a buffet with the band -"Cheap Trick"
