Are you ready for some fantasy football?

Sdaeriji

It's almost football season, so it's about time for us to set up an NS fantasy football league. I like Yahoo Fantasy Sports the best, so I'll be setting up an NS fantasy football league for those who are interested. This thread is for those interested to express said interest, and for those who do get involved to discuss the set up of the league. I believe Yahoo allows up to 12 teams, so I guess the first 11 people to TG me with their e-mail address will get in. Once the league is filled, then we can discuss the point values and such.

Also, I have another league I am involved in with two open slots, so if anyone's interested in playing another league with me and my buddies, shoot me a TG with your e-mail for that league, as well.

As proper football seasons have already begun and American football begins in September, I believe you are capable of figuring it out.

What about LB, SS, TE, Guards, etc?

Can you not set it up so that we have a full lineup, both offensive and defensive?

The only other roster categories I can add are Defensive Player, Defensive Lineman, and Defensive Back. I do have two TEs for roster categories. I just feel that defensive players don't have huge stat lines, and it would just make managing the team more complicated than necessary. What does everyone else think?

The stat categories I can add for those players are:

Tackle Solo (Tack Solo)
Tackle Assist (Tack Ast)
Sack (Sack)
Interception (Int)
Fumble Force (Fum Force)
Fumble Recovery (Fum Rec)
Touchdown (TD)
Safety (Safe)
Pass Defended (Pass Def)
Block Kick (Blk Kick)

Made my team.. now I'm ready to draft! It told me -- Your commissioner must enter your offline draft results and hit the 'Begin Season' button in order for your league to begin play -- So do I start writing down who I want for the positions and bench.. or do we have to bid on them or something? Nvm.. I'll wait til we get the League filled. This will be fun! :)

We've got five people signed up so far. I believe it's me, Harlesburg, Naturality, Deleuze, and Melkor. I've sent Keruvalia and Delator invites, as well as Harlesburg's acquaintance. That, hopefully, will be 8 teams, which is enough to start a league. Of course, others are more than welcome to join, but if no one else does, an 8 team league is enough to run with. We'll have to discuss the draft sometime, too.

Doing an offline draft here is the best idea, I think. I doubt, considering how spread out we all are, that a live draft would be feasible, and I can speak from experience that the autopick draft sucks, and you usually end up overloaded in one or two positions and hopelessly lacking in another. What does everyone else think?

How would an online draft work as opposed to an offline one, exactly?

How would an online draft work as opposed to an offline one, exactly?

We would use the Yahoo draft system. We'd all sign on at the same time and make our picks in real time, just like the regular NFL draft. An offline one we could do here on the forum, and I would just submit the results. The benefit of the offline draft is that we can do it on our own schedule rather than when Yahoo wants us to. If people can't stay for the whole thing they can leave and come back, and we can take several days if we want as opposed to the short amount of time Yahoo provides. And, since some players are halfway across the world, they're not screwed into having to be awake at a ridiculous hour to participate in the draft with us.
Harlesburg

Well you know everyones going to want Manning! :p
Yeah thats right im talking about Eli!

I asked Potaria if they wanted to join seeing as they were spouting off about how Great The Steelers are/were.

With the Autopick draft is that where we pick out top 25 players?

There was a really awesome Rugby League(not Union) game called www.virtualnrl.com and basically you had to pick a minimum of 20 players and a maximum of 25 and of these a certain amount had to be in each position.

It really rocked.

On it youd get 5 pics as would the other 13 teams and you could pick anyone
from the list.
It was live in the sense that the draft would open and you would have 2 days to make 5 picks then those players would be locked in and another 3 could be picked after that the remaining 17 would be a free for all.

On another.
youd rank the 125 players you wanted as a forward and 125 as a back as would the other 13 teams in your competition league and the person who had the highest rank on their list would get them if their was a tie which is highly unlikely obviously someone misses out...

I completely agree. I saw the autodraft option, and all I could think of was "So what if I get 1 RB and 7 WRs?"

I also agree we should do the draft here, perhaps in a new, seperate thread. That way we don't have the real-time issue that Yahoo's draft system has.

Do we have any idea when we might start drafting?

I agree. I'll start a new thread for it.

I was thinking we'd start the draft on Saturday or something. I want to give myself some more time. We only have six teams participating. I thought for sure there'd be more people interested, but I guess not. I would like to get the league up to 8 teams, ideally. I assume you are the Nutsack Punchers? Keruvalia still has not signed up. If we do a real time draft here, then you can change your draft order as other players get drafted. If we do the autopick system, then Yahoo just goes through your ranking list and drafts the top player not yet selected. It means you could end up with a ton of guys in one position and none in another. Believe me; it sucks. Last season I ended up with like 7 great wide recievers and not a single good RB all season.

For the record, whichever draft we do, there will be 18 rounds.

Also, I upped the point values for rushing yards, receptions, and recieving yards, to make quarterbacks less dominating. I was looking at the fantasy points from last season and Joey Harrington was more valuable than LaDainian Tomlinson, and felt that wasn't right.

It's not so much restricting the QB as it is increasing the RB and WRs. QBs were way overrated with the stats I was using. Hopefully this will make it a little more even. The QB should be the most important player on your team, but not that much more than the others.

Letting Yahoo just pick for us won't give us our desired teams or give us the spirited fun of watching someone else snatch the person we were gonna take out next time around. :D It's "fantasy" football, not "let's see how well Yahoo can pick our team for us" football.

Well that's why I figured we'd do a draft here in NationStates. It allows us more time than the Yahoo live draft, and people like Harlesburg, who's in New Zealand, doesn't have to be awake at an assinine time just to participate. I can submit the draft results here into our league. The logistics might be a little odd, but I think it would work out.

Let's take a vote. What kind of draft should we have? A live draft on Yahoo, an offline draft here, or the autopick draft on Yahoo?

Hrmmm ... good point about Harlesburg. Of course, you don't have to be present to participate in a live vote. You can set your rankings ahead of time and have Yahoo do it for you.

Of course an offline draft here would be a logistical nightmare, but it could work.

Add a poll to the thread (thread options) and that'll take care of the vote.

Yeah, the logistics for an offline draft have been warping my mind. I think a live draft would be easier, personally. The only problem is that the autopick system for Yahoo is godawful (trust me; I know), so anyone who couldn't make the online draft would likely get screwed for players.

Okay, we still have seven people. Zwange and Melkor Unchained still haven't signed up, as far as I can tell. Trexia has expressed interest as well. That would make 10, assuming they all sign up. Yahoo won't allow an odd number of teams, though, so I don't want to get screwed with having 7 or 9 people sign up. If we end up with an odd number of players with only a few days left, I'm going to make a junk team to fill the extra spot. They'll draft all crappy backups and won't start anybody. A free win for whoever plays them? It kind of stinks to have to do that, but the way I see it, it's better to have a junk team for everyone to beat up on than to have to kill the league because we have an odd number of teams. Is that okay with everyone?

Maybe our best recourse then is to post the times we'll be available, and determine from those when to have our draft. I, for one, am good from now until the 11th or 12th, any hour at any day of the week with the following exceptions:

1) 4:15-5:15 tomorrow. That's when my public league draft is, and trying to conduct two drafts simultaneously might kill me.
2) Anytime before noon on Sunday. Church.

Nice. I wish I could play a real football game again.

No, you do not have to be there. You can let the system draft for you. You can either let it use the pre-rankings for players or you can make your own draft card that it will follow. It's under the "My Team" tab, in the box with the countdown timer, it should say "Pre-Draft Player Rankings." You can use that to change how you want the system to draft for you.

Understandable. I am sorry about this, but we couldn't even begin the draft until we had an 8th team.

Okay, well, everyone who does plan on participating in the live draft, go to the league page, and test your system (http://drafttester.fantasysports.yahoo.com/porttester/client/testdraft.html?id=nfl). The draft program is some sort of Java applet that you may not have automatically on your computer. It's really simple and easy to do, and it'll let you know if you can run the draft, and if not, how to download the applet so you can.

Really? That sucks. That's actually the most reasonable time for you, too. All the other ones are just earlier and earlier in the morning for you. I guess Yahoo doesn't think too many New Zealanders will be playing in their leagues.

To Zwange and Melkor:

You've got until Thursday morning EST time to sign up, or you won't be able to play. Once the draft is locked in, no more teams can be added.

Yeah, Yahoo has set times for drafts, and yes, you can do trades. The times Yahoo offers are 10am-3pm EST.

No no, once the draft is over you can make trades any time. They are subject to a league veto, so if enough people think it's a ridiculously one-sided trade (and maybe a little under the tableness), they can veto it. I think you need 1/3 of the league to veto a trade for it to be cancelled.

Well I do seem to recall a certain rookie going to the AFC Championship after going 15-0. Also there was also one who went to the NFC Championship. Now if you can find me a team with both Tom Brady and Donovan McNabb, I'd say that I have the best team of QBs in this league.

Perhaps, but I had both last year on my fantasy football team, and they don't put up fantasy numbers. Fantasy football is all about stats and numbers.
