According to the Interfax news service, an official arm of the Chinese government, the system reduces the ability level of a player's online game character if the game is played beyond the three-hour limit. Basically, play more than three hours and the system cuts a game character's ability by half. Play more than five hours and the system reduces a game character's ability to the lowest level possible.

And to think, whenever I talk to someone from China online they wonder why I think they are planted by the government. Seems like they are the only ones who can actually use a computer in China anymore.

So when EVE-Online opens its Asian servers, the Euro players are not only going to get an influx of inexperienced n00b targets, but they're going to lose skill-points while their fleets are safe-spotted.

I like. :D

That sucks... for the Chineese. But honestly, a lot of them grow up thinking their government is great (albeit communist only on paper).

It's like people put all their time into games. I'm pretty sure they have more important things to take care of.

I read it. I see people buying 3 accounts and rotating.

All in all, doesn't their government have something better to do? Aren't they backed up on executions or something?

Hey, they don't tell US how to oppress our own people, do they? :D

No, but the US is the benevolent father-figure for the world. We tell everyone what to do, for their own good of course.

Poppycock. The Chinese are very skilled users of hacks and exploits by all accounts, far more than their Euro countarparts in MMOs. Perhaps a month, perhaps less, but by then, I suspect that the Chinese players will be far from n00b targets and playing like 2 year veterans.

Certainly, CCP will catch those who cheat, or at least try to, but I doubt they will stop them altogether.

Bleh. Make a complaint to the UN about China impeding on the human rights of computer game addicts.

Sometimes what the government does for you is good, you know? Sometimes what the Chinese government does for its citizens is also good, you know?

As for the Chinese government: I wonder why nobody saw it positively - at least those guys are allowed to play their game three hours a day. That's gotta be worth something!
Actually, that pretty much reminds me of how I was allowed to use the computer as a kid - two hours, no more, or the parents erase your game completely!
Talk about a father-figure :D

Aha. The U.S. - father figure. They are like the unwanted step-child of the world, having reached puberty and everyone is waiting for them to mature. Honestly, with only 229 years of existance, it is they who have to learn a lot - for their own good, of course. :p

So punishing all online gamers because of a few idiots is a good thing? What about people who would play for eight or nine hours on a Saturday and then not at all for the rest of the week?

You mean, allowing online gamers their share of the fun despite of a few idiots? Yes, I'd call that a good thing. Not that it couldn't be improved on - but it's a least a start, wouldn't you think?

And those guys who want to spend their weekend on the computer - maybe they should be glad that they get three hours at all. And I believe they are - 'cause what's the alternative? No gaming at all...

Ah, so because the Chinese government could be extremely repressive, we should all hail them for just being very repressive?

While I don't like the idea of the government deciding on what I do with my time...I can understand their sentiments. I mean, a guy dying at an internet cafe because he wouldn't get up after 36 hours to take a piss?

Still...glad I don't live in China.

I like MMORPGs and feel the same way you do. That's why when I saw the demo version of Guild Wars in the store with the ads saying no monthly fee. I am still playing GW to this date and it has been the only MMORPG that I haven't ripped off. It's true; there is no monthly fee to play. GW is much better than Runescape.

I never once sent a cent to Sony for Everquest. I just built my own server (yes, I programmed my own server to work with Sony's end user client) and played it like that, and through a goof (I didn't hack it, it was their own goof)on their website got all of the client end programs and upgrades for free.

I don't run the server anymore now that I have GW.

Now for the topic of discussion:

The Chinese... ugh. I think the only people who have a more inflated vision of their country is us Americans. There would be plenty of ways to get around this degradation of ability, and someone mentioned previously, get more than one account.

I personally though don't think it's necessary. As with anything else, there's always going to be the few that will take something to an extreme. Hindering eneryone else who is responsible about gaming is unfair. If a person wants to play a game so bad that they die from neglecting themselves, I say let them. They're obviously no help to society.

So was 1914-1945 Germany's "terrible two" then? Does that make Germany a toddler right now? Maybe a preschooler?

I guess since you're a Chinese national, what you think about this is probably more important than what I or some other non-Chinese person thinks.

I'm just not sure I could put up with this if it happened here, or anywhere I was living. I don't play an MMORPG now, but I do play computer games, and when I have nothing better to do I often play longer than 3 hours. I don't think my gaming is harming me. I don't die of exhaustion, I don't kill people, I don't let my family members die while I'm playing. It's only a rare, irresponsible fringe that would need any help, and I personally think it's unfair to punish the entire gaming community for the actions of a few fringe members.

Not allowing people to do as they choose in their own time is "good"?
May I inquire as to why?
